He's cutting his nose off to spite his face. Imagine Kane, Dele, Son, Ndombele, Sissoko etc the players that want to be here, hearing that once again we're not planning on improving, despite the absolute dog shit we've served up so far this season. How is that motivating them?

Wouldn’t be surprised if he has been told from up on high that we will not be getting in replacements for Toby, Jan and Eriksen in January whilst we still have those players on our books, and we won’t be able to sell them this window.
So he has been backed into a corner and had to change his approach.

We're comparing what he said after being battered 7-2 vs Bayern where he was hurting and a bit more honest vs an answer he has probably carefully prepared after a 2 week gap where he has to try and get the squad on side. I still reckon the former was closer to the truth.

Everyone saying Poch "has to say that [about January signings}"

Also Poch " January is going to be a good opportunity too to fix this situation and the next one." - Just one month ago

"if we win the CL, I will quit"

Also Poch "I never wanted to leave (paraphrasing)"

You know when you work for a manager who says one thing one day, and another thing the next? Yeah, never ends well...

I do also. I think he wants to change players, but after 2 weeks discussions has been told we won’t be this window, and has just basically told us what the clubs position is.
You don’t do a 360 u-turn, unless you have been told categorically that what you want is not happening.
I think that is an intolerable situation for Poch, and if it is the case shows that a Levy is happy to write the season off.

Jesus Christ what do you lot want from him in the midst of a bad run.

“Yeah, my players are mostly shit, even the new ones who cost a fuck tonne of money, so I’m buying a whole new team in January and this lot can be bought out of the bank of my Rolls at Barnet Spires car boot sale on January 13th”.

You big babies.
Better than Dim's "much of a muchness" motivational tactic.

Personally I reckon him and Levy are on the same page and they're showing public support for the players but come Jan those players will make the decision to find new clubs and we'll get replacements.

None of those players leave in Jan, when they can leave for nothing in June.
Levy won’t buy replacements whilst we are still paying their wages,
We might be able to shift Aurier, that would be it

You mean 180 u-turn? But then again with Poch - he would be spinning around in a complete circle anyway.

What motivates a player more, knowing there’s a player coming in to challenge your position or knowing that there’s nobody coming?

You're assuming what he's telling the players behind closed doors is the same as what he's saying in the press, as far as I know no company does that. Also people were complaining that him talking about January was poor for squad morale, now he's back peddled people are still complaining so I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that whatever he said he was going to catch shit for.

Is it just that we're not setting expectations on signings, but the problems being sorted out are sales? Such as Eriksen/a.n.other contract rebel(s)?

I'd be happy if he said something like - "Lets get to january and then see what happens" when asked questions about transfers.

January is a hard month to get top players unless a club wants rid so I wouldnt be surprised if we didnt get anyone.

Poch's press conferences have become predictable. Words mean nothing anymore, only actions on the pitch and final score.

Exactly. He answers the same mundane questions constantly with the media probing to get a quote or coerce him to say something different.

We need to learn to observe and see what's happening. Quotes from the media really aren't as deep and meaningful as some like. It just isn't a great source of information.

I think he's be far better off if he just avoided those questions and stated we're all working togther to improve on the pitch.

That's were we judged sort of thing.

Cue the headline: "Cagey Poch refuses to rule out Kane transfer to Man Utd in January"

His answer should have been “let’s talk about the January window when we get to January.”

Cue the headline: "Under fire Poch refuses to look at transfers until its too late"

The alternative story is that perhaps he's had a sit down with Levy and/or the Players and his week in Qatar has given him a renewed belief and drive that he can take it back to basics and make things work so he's trying to avoid talk of instability or transfers or change by saying "No, i don't want signings I want what I have got and we'll make it work together" - The players could feel enthused by that and confident that he trusts them again.
