Atkinson needs to be suspended for the error he made last night. He went on emotion which a ref is not there to do. The VAR should also be suspended for not telling the ref he got it wrong

All that needed to have been done was for us to bring on a sub for Son. Case fuckin closed

Whether it was an error depends on how you interpret the rules:

"A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play."

"A player who is guilty of serious foul play should be sent off and play is restarted with a direct free kick from the position where the offence occurred (see Law 13 – Position of free kick) or a penalty kick (if the offence occurred inside the offender’s penalty area). "

He possibly thought that it was a retaliatory tackle for the elbow and that he's gone in to try and hurt him and when he's seen how badly injured Gomes was he's reached for the red. I don't agree that it deserved a red, but that seems to be the thinking. Rightly or wrongly VAR won't overrule the ref if he says that he's seen the incident and is happy with his decision.

And Dermots views.
Dele handball - should have been a penalty. (All pundits agreed with this, as they did last night)
Son - not a penalty, minimal contact, dived to try to win penalty when lost ball (all pundits agreed no penalty as they did last night)
Sons red card, they didn’t really discuss due to sensitive nature of it

He didn’t go on emotion, he went on the consequences of the offence, and the law does back him and VAR up. will be interesting if an appeal happens (not convinced we will appeal, as may be seen as distasteful and not sure Son would be in right state of mind to play if we were to win it)

Those 12 mins were a perfect time for him to look at the screen and use VAR the way its meant to be used, at least then he could have taken his time to make a decision.

My wife's brother in law, the Liverpool supporting muppet who talks total shite about football, is not even enjoying Liverpool being top of the league because of VAR. Says hes not even watching games any more because of it.

That should tell you all you need to know about this shit heap. They're going to probably win their first league title in 30 years and he cant be arsed with it.

Sorry to get side-tracked, but isn't your wife's brother-in-law just your brother?

Son's tackle in isolation in no way endangers the opponent. It was the freak accident afterwards that did that which was no fault of Son or Aurier for that matter.

VAR isn't working. The best thing would be to roll it entirely back, learn from this season, revamp it and roll it out again next season.
PL has been worse off for VAR this season, but I still think there is potential in the technology. It just needs major rethink.

How can they have fucked up this bad with it all?

CLEAR AND OBVIOUS the clue is in the name. If you have to watch a replay 15 times in slow motion it's not clear and obvious

All I wanted was to stop players diving to win a pen and to stop teams scoring goals that was clearly offside

An armpit being offside is just ridiculous

I know, but the post I was replying to was blaming the ref and saying he should be suspended for giving a red card . He saw the incident once so wouldn't know that the injury occurred after the tackle. He's seen a tackle go in and a players ended up with a horrific injury. It's understandable that he's given a red. VAR should correct him really, but we all know that VAR doesn't like to overrule the ref in most situations so it's really unlikely that it's going to overturn a red card where the guys being carted off to hospital and the crowd are incensed at the injury. It should do, but at this stage it's not going to.

But then it would probably mess up next season as well. You might as well keep going with it now until they get it right.

Atkinson made his decision on the spur of the moment. If VAR isn't going to correct wrong decisions I can't see any point in it whatsoever. If anything, the Ref looks even worse now that video footage has proved him to be wrong in his decision but it won't be overturned because there's this stigma around Refs making mistakes. He also had an absolute age to review it but didn't bother. The upshot now is that Son is labelled as 'the player who broke Andre Gomes leg' for the rest of his career, when he clearly didn't, just so that a hasty decision by a Ref isn't overturned when everybody that's bothered to find the facts knows it's wrong. The vast majority will stick with the official version though which demonises an innocent player. I don't blame Atkinson for his hasty decision under the circumstances but I'm angry with the process that has upheld it and will continue to do so through any appeal process, whilst severely damaging an innocent player's reputation.

I agree with most of that. We'll have to wait and see what happens at the appeal, but I'm not optimistic, although the statement that was put out straight after the game wasn't from the same people who will decide the result. The guys who run VAR need to get away from the mindset that overruling the ref undermines him. It doesn't. Not getting to the right decision after a review undermines him.

Like you say they also need to start using the monitors. I can't blame the ref for not using one during that incident when the agreement in the Premier League is that they don't use them. It's stupid. They invent a system that gives the ref the chance to review an incident, but they decide not to use it.

VAR got 3 major incidents wrong in the spurs Everton match today.
Son should have had a penalty and not been sent off and Everton should have had a penalty for Deles hand ball. Not bad 0 out of 3 ?
The thing that got me is there was no decision given after the two penalty reviews. Son not given a penalty then should have been cautioned.for diving. If Deles wasn't handball for being impeded then it's a free kick to us and not a corner.

Atkinson had a red card overturned on appeal last season and went ballistic about it. He apparently made various threats etc saying, as most senior PL official, his decisions should always stand.
Not a hope in hell we win the appeal on Son’s red card.

Supposedly the PL managers are meeting Mike Riley on Thursday for VAR discussions. Hopefully they can get some common sense to prevail but I'm massively skeptical.
