Meanwhile in Spain:

Both Barcelona and Osasuna are making formal complaints to the RFEF about the application of VAR.

Barcelona feel they should have had a penalty because Sociedad got one earlier in the game for what they say was an identical incident. The game finished 2-2.

Osasuna say their player was fouled and the review ignored the foul to decline the penalty. It finished 2-0 to Atletico. Not sure when the penalty incident was.

since the introduction of VAR I honestly think the refs will give a lot less penalties this season. to be honest I don't know what gets a penalty anymore. have seen so many not given this season that looked pretty nailed on considering the refs have been giving fouls for less outside the area, and the man at VAR isn't calling it any different

Today at the stadium it really effected the game. Kane’s offside was level again if you apply the 30 Cm margin of error yet they don’t so it was disallowed. We then didn’t know whether to celebrate the next two goals.

It seems to be ruining the experience it the stadium every week and it’s getting worse. Honestly, there won’t be any point going to games in the ground soon if this continues. Celebrating goals is the most fun part of games and they’re taking that away. I think I’m starting to wish we’d just go back to the ref being the one making mistakes and previously I was a massive advocate of VAR.

Is there a 30cm margin of error? Didnt know about this. If there is then soon 30cm will be 31cm then 32cm etc etc etc

A line has to be drawn somewhere and it was offside unfortunately as close as it was.

I agree though it is ruining the experience but it has worked for us too this season...

The software that does the offside has a 30 cm margin of error because of the camera frame rate or something.

Not exactly.......the frame rate of the camera means that a player (Sterling was the one used as an example) running at pace could travel around 30cm between frames - in one frame he might be 15cm onside and the next 15cm offside, but which frame do you choose? On top of that, the speed that the leg travels when kicking a ball is even faster, and so it is incredibly difficult to tell the exact moment the ball has left the foot.........and to make matters worse, they are also estimating the location of body parts in 3 dimensions......all in, it's just a crap system that isn't accurate, yet all the media quote it as definative.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up!

Basically it shouldn’t be used in those tight calls and the benefit should be given to the attacker I reckon.

Whether Harry Kane was offside or not it made exactly no difference to a goal being scored. Brilliant goal both the pass from Winks and the way Kane passed it into the net. Kane being xxx centimetres offside had no bearing on the goal. Without VAR I m sure 99% of refs would have given that goal and they would have been right to do so.

meanwhile they are unable to review the challenge leading to their free kick and goal. I get that they aren't going to review everything in the game but a free kick 25-30 yards out is a goal scoring chance. The event leading to it can turn a game. Not sure what you'd give if the decision was reversed, free kick the other way I suppose? in this instance it leads to a goal and results in a player being booked/suspended so if the player dives (and I think he does..) it's an important moment.

The fact that simulation, or cheating to us more mature folk, is a yellow card, and it was obvious after only one replay the VAR should have stepped in.

My main point is that it’s just ruining the fun of celebrating goals. They’re reviewing every one now and it’s making being at the game quite a bit less exciting.

Said the same just now in the PL thread. I remember having a conversation with a work colleague at the start of the season where he said it would get to the stage where fans barely celebrate goals.

I thought he was being ott, but I do find myself now curtailing my celebrations after the initial few seconds and immediately looking at the ref for the dreaded finger in the ear.

Took my son who is over here for Christmas and the first time he has been to the new stadium as well as experiencing VAR live. He could not believe how bad it is in the stadium with fans kept in the dark about what is happening with the result that the atmosphere is seriously harmed. You go to live games for the experience but if it’s lousy then you might as well spend your money on the best TV set; stay home and get the benefit of a commentary telling you what is happening

I think this approach would certainly help. I still dont know why they dont use this i really dont get it - what are they trying to hide.

VAR will be in place all this season. They cannot, unless all clubs agree, change the rules half way through a season as there will be many clubs who will make formal complaints.

For me, the point of VAR was to stop any controversy, however it is clearly causing much much more and goals are being disallowed over millimetres which may or may not be offside as the technology is not 100% accurate. Therefore next season they could make one very easy decision which is unless it is a clear offside then it stays with the on field decision.

The fact that every single goal is now checked for any infringement is surely taking away the very point of football.

And in the Man City game, the ball hits the ref and he should stop it but doesn’t, and VAR doesn’t intervene......!! Honestly football is broken!

That wasn't that difficult, was it!

I really like that approach, the ref only has one set of eyes so the help is needed.

Also having refs mic-ed up should bring a better level of decorum onfield, one would hope.

And how do you define a clear offside?
And what happens when someone decides goal A in one match is a clear offside and goal B in another match isnt?
Oh yeah, shit storm ensues.
I mean Verts once had a goal disallowed for offside when several yards onside in his own half!
The law of offside needs changing in order for VAR to be applied sensibly imo.
By definition there has to be a line drawn for offside. You cant introduce a grey area where its down to opinion (which is exactly what they have done with the 'clear and obvious' bollox).
Whats the point of having VAR if thats what you're going to do?
Then there's the application. Why the fk it takes so long is a mystery. Surely technology can tell you straight away? Why do we even need 4 dicks sat around a table discussing it? Should be 10secs max.
I was pro VAR and I still am but the application, fk no.
As soon as I heard the plan to have 4 people (not even a fkin odd number so you get a majority) sat remotely reviewing it, ref cant look at screen and that bloody clear and obvious shit I knew it was being set up to fail.
I'm a conspiracy nut and believe its been fked intentionally I really do. Unless they really are thick as shit. Tough call lol.
