The VAR Thread

The ref couldn't have just blown it up. It's not in the laws of the game. Before this year, even when the ball actually touched the referee, the referee couldn't stop play. The ref was considered part of the field, and so, even if the ball went off the ref straight into the goal, the goal stood. Not saying the refs positioning was great this time, but nothing the ref or VAR could do here.

Personally, I think VAR shouldn't review offside. Should be treated as fouls are: referee decisions. If a few offside decisions are missed, we'd all just get on with it, just like we do with perceived fouls. Not saying we'd always be happy with all decisions, but that's football ffs. Add to that the fact that we don't have the technology to see the exact point where the player first made contact with the ball to pass it, so the decision on the offside itself is flawed from the first.

In any case, offside should be judged on the position of the feet, none of this armpit nonsense. That would make it so much clearer for referees, for VAR and every other person involved on the game to understand.

I think common sense wouldn't have gone amiss there, it was obvious the ref impeeded the play and should have been called back for a drop ball.

Common sense leads to referees just doing what they think is right. Would set a dangerous precedent imo.

IFAB are saying VAR shouldn’t be being used in these marginal offside calls, in fact their existing guidance says the technology can’t be relied on to make these kind of calls.

You really have to wonder why the FA, PL and PMGOL have ignored this.

And I bet that would cut down on 99% of this VAR bullshit that's been going on this season.

I think that needs to be set by the authorities, surely when they made that rule you'd think that someone would have pointed out if the ref may impede a player before he gets the ball, what happens then?

Not for me. I think if the lino had given any of the offsides we've seen this weekend they would have been crucified. Got so much more wrong than right.
No, they didn't get anything wrong. They got everything right by the laws of the game.
Whether you think it should stand or not, its ridiculous or whatever, doesnt come into it.
I'm not pro VAR as it stands, dont get me wrong, but they are just applying it as instructed.

I don't disagree with you. I don't like VAR for offside decisions. And I do think there will be a law change made soon saying if a referee obstructs a player they can stop play. But just letting referees choose when to stop play based on a feeling of fairness or common sense is opening up a new can of worms.

That on top of Infantino, the FIFA President, 2 weeks ago saying that the referees in the PL should be using pitch side monitors and he didn’t realise they were operating against protocol by not doing so.

It’s all so utterly bizarre.

Seems deliberate to me tbh. I don’t think the FA and PL ever really wanted VAR and they’ve set out to ensure it fails.

This is strange, because at one point the rules were that offside doesn't have to count as a clear and obvious error, but I've just had a look at the latest rules and it's not in there now. It's either been changed or there are two sets of rules for VAR.

In which rules did you see that?

I'm not sure which ones I originally checked... probably the FIFA world cup rules, although it might have been the champions League rules from last season. I've just checked the IFAB rules though and it definitely mentions that decisions need to be clear and obvious.

Common sense should have prevailed there though.

it wasn’t the refs fault a player passed it in his direction. If they managed to pass it to one of their own, lumped it up field and scored there wouldn’t of been any complaints.

the ref can’t position himself knowing where the ball might go

It isn't the ref's fault if he gets in the way of the ball and touches it either yet we have a rule now that says that the match needs to be restarted if this happens, so what's ultimately the difference here - the referee is still technically interfering with the match as he is impeding the player from touching the ball.

well until they introduce a rule that says if the ref gets in the way and doesn't touch the ball, there is no argument. The ref is part of play he can't decide on a new rule because the action cost a team a goal. if it had touched him and he let it go then I could understand.

Hence me pioneering for common sense...It's literally the same thing refs are still intefeering with the game whether directly or indirectly.

common sense has never been in the game, and doubt it will start now.

no point arguing something when the rules, refs and VAR are already ruining in the game.

Need to change it to a review system giving each team two reviews per match. Put it up on the big screen stating what the review is for, get it wrong you lose your review. Make it entertainment don’t use it to rule out goals leaving everyone confused because you have failed to communicate
