I agree with that but not as a solution to the VAR offside issue. The issue with VAR isnt really the offside rule itself, its the damn lines...

If the offside is not obvious to the naked eye using the monitor then the goal should be given... none of these lines. Even if you have feet as the point of contention youre still going to be using the lines regardless UNLESS the use of lines are stopped.

I think VAR as a whole is working ok with the exception of offsides and the inability to listen to the conversation which i think should be bought in.
IFAB will force the PL to listen re: the offsides, we can read that from the statement they made over Christmas.

It's mental that the PGMOL have taken the approach they have. It's right there in the article, The Ifab stressed the guidance on offside will not be new advice. That means it's the English who have fucked it, again.

I just don't trust them to make a mid-seasom change. They'll argue that they can't have different interpretations at different points of the season, even if they've got it completely wrong the first time.

I know what you mean, but I'm sure they made some changes to how they were doing things after the last meeting in November. I think the Premier League have already acknowledged that they need to make changes after the next meeting.

I’ll hold my hands up. I thought it was going to be good for the game and good for us in particular. Completely wrong. I think I’d rather just go back to the on pitch officials being incompetent and biased rather than having them and a faceless man in a studio doing it too.

Declan Rice saying no one wants VAR, but like a lot of people he spectacularly misses the problem in this instance is the stupid new handball rule

VAR is not wanted in Premier League - West Ham's Declan Rice - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51071770
FFS, people are idiots.

Also, the clubs wanted VAR. The clubs specifically demanded that the PL introduce it. If the players were against it they should've told their reps and Chairmen.

All VAR has done is transfer the referring inconsistency from on the pitch to off the pitch.

It’s still the same group of referees making the same inconsistent decisions.

VAR has showed up both the PGMOL's officials and quite a few of the rules of the game to be utterly unfit for purpose.

It's just a tool, it needs the right conditions to work properly, and those conditions aren't being met. I cannot understand people who blame "VAR" like it's some divine entity that will always make the right call.

Yes, It could be the best technology ever, it’s still fucking tools like Mike Dean sat behind the monitor. I wouldn’t trust him playing solitaire let alone with this shit.

Have to say I found it funny that CP Fans were holding up banners in the 1st half calling for VAR to be scrapped. I wonder how they felt when Gooner got his yellow upgrade to a red & to me it was way more of a red than Son's.

Think in a year or two when they iron out the issues, as I think they will, we'll just get on with as we did with Hawk-eye.

I don't think the comparison with Hawkeye is really valid because that's never not worked as intended. But I agree with your general point.

Some strange decisions in the games yesterday.

Palace's 'penalty'. Stones cuts across Zaha and it's a clear trip. Guardiola in the background puts his hands to his head. Even if Zaha runs towards the defender, he's still brought down. Willian got a pen for less last week.

Man City's 'penalty'. It was a clear handball. It was also accidental. Defender stops a cross with his foot, ball rebounds onto his hand. Ref looking right at it, gives the pen. VAR overrules. No pen.

I don't understand why Palace weren't given the penalty. Should be clear. And I don't understand City weren't given the penalty. Yes, accidental, but ultimately prevented the cross. Didn't see an explanation but can only assume it was decided he was unable to get out of the way? Does the deflection matter in these cases? but if that's the reason then Declan Rice's goal last week should have also stood. Ball was headed onto his hand. Or does advantage only apply in an attacking sense?

Wolves player was taken out by two Saints defenders, similar to how Kane was vs Newcastle (except with a 2nd defender on the other side). Ref says no! Review says yes. Penalty given. Amazing it needed a review, really.

Ben Godfrey of Norwich sent off after pitchside review. Similar tackle to Aubamayeng last week. Upgraded from yellow to red. Consistent with last week.

Watford's defender was similar. Accidental but prevented an attacking opportunity. Should be a pen? Unless the deflection is an issue. At least it's consistent with the decision in the City-Palace game. Even if both are surprising.

No problem with Vertonghen's handball, although also accidental and the way most defenders will fly in to block a shot.

Are pitchside monitors only used for upgrading challenges? In that case, the studs up scrape on Tanganga's knee should have been reviewed (was it?) - it felt like it got lost in the headset delay.

The handball decisions seem like perfect moments to review as well. Otherwise it's as Mourinho said the other week; might as well remove the A because it's the video refereeing the game.

Also, Michael Oliver. 3m 20s changing his headset, yet only 2 mins added. Wasn't impressed with him.

Yes, this is the huge flaw in the handball rule that was introduced last summer. Attackers are penalised for accidental handballs that lead to goals no matter how slightly or unexpectedly the ball makes contact with the arm, defenders are not penalised for accidental ones that stop goalscoring opportunities if they're deemed to have been unable to get out of the way.

As you say, at least you can credit the officials in that the handballs in our game and the City game were both not given. We know where the bar is, it's just a really bad law and it's not the match officials fault that it is like this, it's IFAB's fault (though the Home Nations have 4 of the 8 spots on the IFAB board).

West Ham's penalty last night was so soft: https://streamja.com/nM2v

Not surprised Schmeichel was so angry. They would have seen this in real time and countless reviews and still thought it was a penalty.

Haller's fall looks like the Leicester player shoves him (the 2nd replay) but he actually jumps, lands and falls.
