To be honest as soon as Son was subbed and starting walking that way you could see their fans throwing it abuse so it's no surprise some idiot has made this gesture and it probably doesn't take too much imagination to guess at what the gesture was.

Another example of 1 stupid moment of madness and their face is plastered online for the rest of their life

You say that like it’s a bad thing…

The sad reality is nobody will remember this guy in a weeks time. And there will be more incidents like this in the future.

I also feel that the referees have some part to play in this too. Son could have taken a shorter route to our bench but the ref made him walk all the way round which took him past the opposing fans. I mean how difficult can it be to add a minute or two if necessary, if a player decides to take a slow walk off the pitch?

It’s not the referee who makes the rules but he does have to ensure they are followed. It is Son who needs to have his brain in gear and walk towards the home supporters and get their adulation rather than walk past the away support.

I think you're splitting hairs here but that's your opinion and I respect that.

I get that the ref does not make up the rules but he's in control on the day and seeing as this (abuse to players) is a reoccurring thing, he could have used common sense and allow Son (players) to exit at the closest path to their bench.

I may be misremembering - but I think it was the ref who pointed Son off in that direction.

I think a bigger issue than the racial components - is why do we, as a society, think its acceptable to dish out any of this abuse to people?

I watch that clip, and see kids and dads happily abusing another person. I think we have grown too accustomed to this behavior and many will just write it off as "part of the game".

I’ve seen the clip. It’s blatant racist abuse from half wits. No one should have to put up with that.
WTF is wrong with these people.

I was banned from COYS for suggesting that Son didnt get teh player of the year nomination last year because of unconscious bias racism. How the fuck am I supposed to prove it...

It happens regularly to me at football matches. Plenty of halfwits in the ground every week.

We are blessed to have sonny.

Putting the horrible racism aside for one minute, how thick must the man have been knowing he would so easily be picked out?

Kudos to Sonny smiling in the face of such an appaling gesture.

Regarding all those gesturing the ⚓️ sign to him or any other player for that matter, the cowardly so and so's - knowing the player cannot do anything.

I would be sorely tempted to do a Cantona and set about them.

There are a minority of supporters from just about every club for whom the tribalism has no boundaries. It's unique to football as well where some people will always take things too far. It's gone on for decades now and will probably always be just under the surface. Opportunities have been missed repeatedly like the Chelsea behaviour in Paris which, had it resulted in a lengthy ban might just have struck a chord and got through to the neanderthals. It would be very hard to police though once 'fans' realise they can impersonate supporters from rival clubs and cause havoc.

Thats the issue for me - why does being in a football stadium make people think they have some kind of impunity from how they behave?
My guess is before phones and TV were there to film the evidence there werent enough Stewards to do anything about it.
Surprised the PL dont make it more explicit that this kind of behavior will lead to expulsion from Grounds and prosecution..
