BBC Live Text
15:04 GOAL - Tottenham 0-1 Reading - Pavel Pogrebnyak (4 mins)
And an even better start for Reading! Ian Harte remains one of the deadliest left foots in the west, and when he hits the underside of the crossbar with a free-kick from 20 yards, Pavel Pogrebnyak reacts well to steer a header into the empty net.
15:09 GOAL - Tottenham 1-1 Reading - Michael Dawson (9 mins)
Spurs level in routine fashion, as Gylfi Sigurdsson's corner is met at the near post by Michael Dawson, who flicks in a diving header in style.
HALF-TIME- Tottenham 1-1 Reading
16:07 GOAL- Tottenham 2-1 Reading - Emmanuel Adebayor (51 mins)
What a header! Some serious hang time from Emmanuel Adebayor as he gets up and stays up, hanging in the air to get on the end of an Aaron Lennon cross and flicking the ball into the corner. Fabulous play from the big man.
Substitution Scott Parker joins the action as a substitute, replacing Mousa Dembele.
Substitution Clint Dempsey on for Gylfi Sigurdsson.
16:35 GOAL - Tottenham 3-1 Reading - Clint Dempsey
Brian McDermott, you have my sympathies. Reading have had a really good spell, created a few excellent chances, but they have been punished by a very unfortunate goal. Clint Dempsey takes aim from 30 yards, it takes a massive deflection off the heel of Mikele Leigertwood and drifts over Adam Federici and into the net. Cruel.
Substitution Jake Livermore joins the action as a substitute, replacing Emmanuel Adebayor.

Tottenham without suspended Gareth Bale for Premier League clash with Reading

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to carry their fine form into 2013 as they kick off the New Year against a Reading side in a relegation dogfight.
Spurs have won six of their past eight matches to stay firmly in contention for a top-four finish, and enjoyed back-to-back victories in their post-Christmas fixtures.
Gareth Bale was the star of the show with a hat-trick in the 4-0 Boxing Day success at Aston Villa, before Tottenham came from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 away from home on Saturday.
Andre Villas-Boas' men will now be looking forward to returning to White Hart Lane to face a team they beat 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium earlier in the season.
Reading will head to Spurs in good spirits after Pavel Pogrebnyak's goal against West Ham United gave them just a second league win of the campaign.
The Royals had drawn 0-0 with Swansea City in the previous game to end a run of seven straight defeats, and will now be determined to push on and try to secure survival.
Brian McDermott's side are three points clear of rock-bottom Queens Park Rangers, but remain five points adrift of safety.

Tottenham
Gareth Bale is suspended for Tottenham after his booking for diving against Sunderland made it five yellow cards for the season.
Andre Villas-Boas has a number of options as Bale's replacement, with Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson coming on as substitutes at the Stadium of Light.
Scott Parker could also be pushing for a first start in midfield, while Villas-Boas may decide to rotate at centre-back yet again after bringing Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker in for Jan Vertonghen and William Gallas last time out.

Reading
Jason Roberts could be in contention after missing Reading's last five games with a hip injury.
Adam Le Fondre will hope to feature after being left on the substitutes' bench against West Ham, although Brian McDermott is likely to continue with just one up front and may name an unchanged starting XI.
Defender Sean Morrison returned to the bench for Saturday's win over West Ham after recovering from an ankle injury, but goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is a long-term absentee with a shoulder problem.

Tottenham are without Gareth Bale after the winger picked up his fifth booking of the season to trigger a one-match ban.
Clint Dempsey will again be on the bench, and he may be joined by the returning Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Reading boss Brian McDermott could stick with the same starting line-up for the third game running.
Jason Roberts is struggling with a hip injury and is unlikely to play, along with long-term absentee Alex McCarthy.

A look at the league table from this stage last season shows that Tottenham sat third under Harry Redknapp on New Year's Day. They enter 2013 in fourth under Andre Villas-Boas and the Portuguese manager must be delighted with the progress his new side have made since his summer arrival in north London. He has even managed to get the previously sceptical Spurs fans behind him.

Tottenham have won six out of their last eight league games and it should really have been seven if they had not conceded two goals in injury time to lose to Everton.
In fact, no side has conceded more late goals than Spurs, which must disappoint AVB. They have let in nine in the last 10 minutes of matches, but in a weird quirk they are the only club yet to concede in the opening 15 minutes of any Premier League match this season.
They will have no Gareth Bale, though, against Reading as the flying Welsh winger is suspended after receiving that controversial booking for simulation against Sunderland.
The Royals will take comfort from that, and from the fact that Tottenham have looked fallible at times at White Hart Lane this season, having dropped points to Wigan, Norwich, West Brom and Stoke.
Brian McDermott's side appear to have turned the corner after a disastrous set of results. Their defence has tightened up dramatically and back-to-back clean sheets and a haul of four points represents a great Christmas for the club.
But they remain rooted in the bottom three and it is crucial they keep up this momentum to try and haul themselves out of the relegation zone.

Head-to-head

  • Spurs are unbeaten in their last six league and cup games against Reading.
  • Reading have never won in eight previous visits to White Hart Lane.
  • They have conceded 24 goals in those eight matches - including six on their last league visit on 29 December 2007 when they lost an extraordinary match 6-4.
Tottenham
  • Tottenham have suffered only two defeats in their last 20 Premier League games in the month of December (W12 D6 L2).
  • Spurs have taken 19 points from a possible 24 in their last eight league games.
  • Andre Villas-Boas' side are the only Premier League team to score in every away game this season.
Reading
  • The Royals' win over West Ham was only their second victory of the season and they have now kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season.
  • It was their first win in nine matches.
  • Striker Pavel Pogrebnyak goal drought, which had lasted for seven hours and 58 minutes, ended against the Hammers.

Pretty confident. After good away wins it would be nice to put on a show for the home fans.

If ever there is a match to assist our goal difference then this is it.

Only worry being Reading defending with 11 men behind the ball for 90 minutes.

The boys are going to need to be fired up and playing at a fast tempo from the kick off.

I can see a 0-0 at half time. Hopefully reading will then believe they can get something from the game which is when it will open up to a 3-0 win.

Who will replace Bale? Im sure it will be dempsey, but i think this would be a good game to give townsend a run out. Give defoe a rest and play Dempsey or Sig thru the middle.

Happy New Year!!

sadly this will be a drudge of a game - Reading are playing a lot deeper according to Reading fans and will try to park the charabang.

I'd wager they won't succeed.

These games against teams that we "should beat easily" are the ones that make me most nervous, how many of them have we seen over recent years where we have dropped silly points?

I don't understand this CB rotation.

Obviously I realise Verts was rested on Sat, but why all of a sudden is Daws in there ahead of Caulker?

Was hoping Ekotto would be on the bench but otherwise strong team. Can rotate against Coventry.
