I think he'd be good enough to be an option on the bench for when Son / Moura proves ineffective playing upfront (like how Llorente was used). I'd also say he'd be good enough to come off the bench in the 85th minute when we're struggling to break a team down, even when Kane is fit.
Look at the way we play, a lot of long balls up to Kane.

I dont see Son or Moura being able to play that role.

So that would mean Deeney playing if Kane got injured.

Who is a top class backup?

How about we don't sign a "back up" at all? how about we sign someone willing to do what Kane did, GRAFT and show great attitude to CHALLENGE Kane and also be able to play alongside him as required.

If we were really serious about challenging someone like Edouard would be who we'd be going for. Alternatively, Ismaila Sarr would be my pick

I think Muriqi is the obvious one. Big physical unit and wouldn't cost the earth.

We’ve been linked with Willian more that Arsenal has and we’ve been linked a lot with a Coutinho. Its all paper talk anyway and they change their fantasy headlines daily.

Also, last time I checked neither plays striker.

Coutinho might be fun to try. A 5’3 target man?

So you're saying that signing Deeney would improve us :p

Or maybe we need to re-sign Llorente :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Heard very good things but haven't seen him play much.....is mobile enough to play on the counter?
Hes more mobile than a Llorente or a Giroud for sure. Although I think hold up play and aerial duels are more key to the way we are currently going direct to the CF.

It is underwhelming but perhaps this is where we are at at the moment i.e. prioritising our high expenditure in areas of real need. Deeney as a back up is ok but only on the proviso that we strangthen others areas of the team with quality (not necessarily high spend)

It is underwhelming however and just shows where we are at currently. Clearly regression and as Poch said - painful rebuild.

I’m torn between Watkins and Mitrovic. Mitrovic is a better number 9, but would not see as much game time in my opinion as our default would be Kane plus two wider options. Mitrovic might even suffer for the lack of game time. Watkins, however, has played as much as a wide player as he has a centre forward, so would get plenty of game time out wide. He could even emerge as first choice on the opposite side to Son, which would mean that we’d be starting three players who could play down the middle and bring in Lucas, Dele and Bergwijn in for any of them at any time, including for Kane, and shuffle things to still have an effective presence down the middle.
completely agree with that.

As has been said many times before on SC, it's probably not realistic to sign a top-class back-up for Kane. Talented strikers want to be the main no.9, not rot on the bench. Any striker we sign will either be a big gamble (e.g. we tried sign Martial two summers ago, while he was underachieving...that would have been a big risk at the time) or will be far more average than fans want.

Two proven internationals who were well off-form and we couldn't wait to be rid of. Ousting them in the starting XI would have been fairly equivalent to Parrott earning a place on the bench over Llorente, had we kept him on the books last season.

I'm fairly certain there wasn't another striker in the squad:
Pavlyuchenko and Saha left two years earlier.
Crouch and Gudjohnson had both been gone 3-4 years.
Janssen joined 2 years after Kane broke through.

Well they don't have to be 'top top class' but they do need to be more mobile and better quality than Troy Deeney that I know for sure.

Still want a Son-type more than a Kane-type, that way they can play in the same 11 as Harry and not just when H is out.

Then they won't be rusty AF when needed.

Could be a lot more eloquent and go in to the numerous variables surrounding Kane's health, our need for a legitimate strike partner or plan B under Mourinho, the 60+ matches ahead of us if we go far in the Europa League, the uncertainty around Parrott being ready, and most importantly, potential financial issues preventing new signings next summer, etc. etc.

It is just this simple though: if your goal is to have a good side, buy good players. An (implied) corollary to this is do not buy subpar or average players who will play a role in your side. Deeney is not worth starting for any top half PL side and I don't think he ever had the technique or tactical ability to play in a Spurs side; certainly not now when he's physically limited. The sooner this thread is closed the better.

I thought I clicked Troy Deeney thread....:cautious:(n)
To be fair, all the player threads are full of shit.

They all degenerate into either player X is shit v player X is great

OR

random player Y is better than player X - ooh, great I love random player Y, lets sign him.

Whilst we maintain the mentality that we can only sign a striker who is happy to be back up to Kane, as opposed to competition for him then we have to look at players like Wilson and Deeney.

Those who are outraged by this rumour are the ones who think we can go and sign Lewandowski and tell him that he is here just to keep us ticking over when Kane breaks down.

So until we start looking at our squad differently, like City did when they brought Jesus in to challenge Aguero, rather than having Roque Santa Cruz or whoever it was they had when they just needed numbers, then this makes perfect sense.

I don't know a huge amount about Wilson, but with Deeney we would be bringing in someone who would be happy to play second fiddle but would also work their arse off in any minutes they were given, he would rattle defenders when thrown on when chasing a game, can chip in with goals when needed and would also be happy to be given a chance at a bigger club in the autumn of his career.

Be interested to know what the 2 d'ohs are for.

I'm not advocating the signing of Deeney, I am saying that whilst we have this mindset that dictates that Harry Kane doesn't need competition,he just needs someone to step in every now and then we can only expect the club to look at the likes of Deeney and Wilson who would accept that sort of role.

I d'ohd you for the comment that anybody who wouldn't want us to sign a fat plodder from Watford expects us to sign Lewandowski as Kane's back-up. I know it was hyperbole, but the insinuation that those against signing Deeney are the ridiculous ones made me facepalm. Though, I get where you're coming from in your subsequent post above.

Ideally isn't that what we hope Parrot is? A young talent that will be able to challenge for Kane's spot eventually? Until he is ready for that role though, doesn't it make sense to find someone that is a PL caliber talent who can give Harry a rest during cup matches and matches against inferior competition? Obviously, barring injury, "Fat Drake" isn't getting on the pitch against Chelsea or Liverpool but when we play the dregs of the league like Brighton or Villa, an experienced striker like him can give us enough cover to let Kane sit for a spell.
To me, that is the argument for a "backup" that we can get on the cheap. Especially when there are positions on the pitch that really require greater long term investment.
