There’s no way we can should keep both Vertonghen and Alderweireld , both are slow in possession most importantly when it comes to actual one on one defending there are an embarrassment I have no confidence in them.

Since Alderweirelds been given a new contract times up for Vertonghen add to the list Eriksen Rose Wanyama Dier

Jan seems worse lately because he’s spent most of the time playing LB which he can do, but put him up against anyone with pace and it shows him up. He’s still a brilliant CB and I’d be more the happy for him to sign a new contract, if nothing else he’d be absolutely superb cover for anyone better that did come in. Whether he’d stay knowing he’s second choice is another matter, but there’s no doubt for me that he can still do a very good job for us.

No, I don’t agree here. Whoever we have in defence would be overworked because of the lack of decent screening in front of them. Jan is definitely blowing hard in matches, though. His fitness just isn’t there.

The defence reminds me of of some of our teams in the 90s, where we had good defenders like Mabbbut, Campbell and others, but never ever signed a decent defensive midfielde to protect them, and our defence was almost always leaky as hell.

I would be fine with one year extension and him filling in/playing cups.

My question is why Sanchez is getting benched and Tanganga and Jan prefered over him..?

Jose doesn't fancy him I guess. We don't press high up the pitch like we did with Poch so the pace of Sanchez isn't needed as much.

I’ve got to say with a heavy heart that I’m OK with him leaving on a free this summer now. He’s been a fabulous player and I’m quite shocked at the speed of his decline physically this year, but him leaving will hopefully force Levy to buy another left sided CB, which we do need doing forward.
He's clearly dropped physically. I'm sure that's what Pochettino would have seen before it was clear to us too.

Replace him with a more Mourinho suited CB IMO. Tall, physical and aggressive with decent pace too. Feel like that would complement our other CBs nicely too. I'd then probably loan out Foyth who needs to play every week and go for Japhet, Sanchez, Toby and said CB going forward.

I may be on my own here, and not for the first time, but I think the whole defence needs a serious upgrade. For some reason which I can't quite work out yet, the combination of Toby, Jan and Sanchez very rarely works. It's often as if they were strangers playing together for the first time.

But the future may not be too far away. I love the look of Japhet Tanganga although he's still young (20) and very raw, he seems to have all the right attributes.

The infuriating thing
about Jan is that he
wants always
to pass to Toby
and only takes the ball forward
under protest.
and very slowly
It limits
our attacking bandwidth.

Jan was best with Dier/Wanyama and Dembele coming to take the ball from him.

If we could manage to get Ndombele fit and purchase a good DM I think he'd be absolutely fine in that set up alongside Toby.

He hasn't suddenly become a bad defender, nor have any of our others. They just dont get the protection they used to with the aforementioned centre mids.

Pretty sure he has started every game he could under Mourinho and has a slight niggle at the moment so he's been used sparingly. Mourinho has publicly praised him too, so I doubt that he doesn't fancy him.

I will always respect Vertonghen and I still don't think he is finished at a decent level, but watching him these days is just sad. He is so far off. Can he bounce back? Maybe, but I am a bit shocked how quickly the decline happened. Last season I thought he had his best season at Spurs so I'm not sure what happened.

I don't mind if he is extended for 1 year at the time, but would he accept a bit part role? I think the best thing for him professionally would be to go to for example Italy. If Fazio can swim down there Vertonghen certainly could as well.

"It is easy for him to run. Physicality is his talent. It is genetic, it is his natural condition. He is an athlete. It is up to him but he could play until he is 40."
