A lifelong Spurs supporter, of course.

As well as being a Spurs supporter, Jewish and a wonderful actor, he was also a prominent member of the British Humanist Association and the Labour Party - and thus someone for whom I had a hell of a lot of respect, on a number of levels.

A real trooper. My daughter stage managed one of his shows, when he was extremely ill, but he still turned in great performances, however dreadful he looked and felt offstage. Very interesting sounding guy too.

Mitchell was once asked for his idea of perfect happiness. "Play three sets of tennis, and win of course, take the family for a sail in the afternoon, and watch Spurs beat Arsenal 6-0 in the evening."

Many years ago I was at a home match vs West Ham. He came running out of the tunnel in his Alf Garnett long coat and boots, wearing a West Ham scarf. He jogged over to the goal at the Park Lane end and smashed the ball into the goal from close range.... all the Hammers cheering and laughing. He then picked up a mic ,and bellowed out something along the lines of
" Have a look at that Hammers...(big cheer from them) ...because thats the only goal you will score today! (massive cheers from the Spurs fans )!!!
Great memory, apols if I haven't done it justice, but it was a very funny moment!

Very sad.
Many many years ago my Dad and I got to a home game early and with my official autograph book in hand I waited for the players to arrive hoping I may be able to get a signature or two. While we were waiting I saw Warren talking to a group of people about 20 feet from us. He saw me looking and after a few minutes walked over to us. "Well kid if you aren't going to come to me I'm going to have to come to you aren't I?" He said extending his hand. He had a conversation with my Dad and I about chances for the season, playing a West Ham fan and his love of Spurs then signed my book. As an 11 year old I was made up that someone famous had taken time out to speak to me. Really nice guy.
R.I.P

He and his family were personal friends. He was a wonderful caring intelligent man. Quite the opposite of the character he played. He will be very much missed.

When I was young I remember him coming on at half time in Alf Garnett character on a few occasions

He never broke character when I saw him and always made reference to being a West Ham fan and how the real team are down the road etc

I'm surprised to hear he broke character during the game you mention

RIP Warren - my Granddad used to love your show

Does anyone remember an FA Cup match against Newcastle which I think we won one nil with Nico Claesen scoring. The Geordies took the whole end and we're miss behaving. He came out at half time and gave them a rollicking over the mic and stopped a near riot.

I was at the game and remember that. He had me laughing my head off.
