I don’t rate Dier and think he is not good enough (currently atleast). But a moment around 80-ish minute I noticed he screamed, waved and tried to get the whole team fired up. That I like and maybe that is just what we need on field...

Depressing analysis from Jenas who is bang on. Sissoko and Dier in particular just dont seem to make angles to receive the ball and pass forward.

The positive is it genuinely cant get any worse and if we can recruit well and get Ndombele up to speed it will be a massive improvement

We must be a central midfielder in January

Yeah was bang on. Scarily highlighted what we lack in that area with the two of those in midfield, at least in terms of building with the ball and going forward.

I don't know what to make of it all to be honest, we have a player in Lo Celso sat on the bench who at least looked liked he got himself on the ball, played it forward and dictated play from that same position whilst at Betis.

Being honest I think we could and should be looking to sign a DM who can play the role better than Dier does, but in the short term we just need to get Ndombele fit and starting regularly next to Dier, because he has that ability to receive the ball under pressure and pass the ball forward better than any of our other central midfielders.

We know all about Dier and Sissoko. They are far from good enough technically to be regulars in our midfield but they were there to do the defensive job today.

If we want to move the ball better, sure play Winks and Skipp. But the ball was in the air a lot of the time and are particularly a threat out wide with their switch of plays. I think they'd have both been bullied if they'd been on the pitch today.

I think Sier could come good if given time.

He's still, I think, not fully recovered from his run of injuries and for me still seems, not so much rusty, but a but nervous and unsure of himself.

When he was playing in midfield in his real breakout season as a midfielder he was fantastic, taking frees for England. He had attacking threat and chipped in with goals regularly. He'll never be, say a Gerrard but he can get close to that, and certainly showed signs he could become a very complete midfielder.

Jose clearly likes him and I think more game time, a motm award today won't hurt at all and I'd say we all agree, today certainly isn't him at his best, but with an arm around his shoulder and patience, I think dier can be a huge part of this team this and next season, if he can just add that bit of finesse to his game.

Jenas analysis was spot on. Perhaps why Davinson seems to struggle at times with Sissoko and/or Dier in midfield, Toby is good on the ball and can pass well, Davinson hasn’t got the skill set needed to compensate for our lack of progressiveness in midfield, and is effectively doing a job he shouldn’t have to do.

Hi all
Long time lurker first time poster!!

Nothing like the sc match rollercoaster on a weekend eh?:LOL:

Grinded out the result with a good defensive performance against a very good team.

Sure the performance could be better but its early days yet!!! Onwards and upwards

Oh and on a lighter note.. Dier seems to be turning the corner fitness wise.. he actually ran fast enough to clip adama on that tackle... bwhahahahah

Surely Jenas is the world expert on criticism of Spurs midfielders, you could write a dozen volumes of “constructive feedback” leveled at him in SC match threads!

The point I'm making is we didn't play well, teams win and play poorly all the time this was one of those times.

We were hitting too many long balls and effectively giving the ball back to wolves inviting pressure, and while the plan may have been to hit them on the counter it was executed poorly and IMO we didn't threaten them once (on the counter).

You said the counter was effective I'm saying it wasn't in this game, if we try these tactics and perform them as poorly as we did today, better teams will destroy us.

It's all relative. For 2 seasons despite the CL our football was terrible. We didnt play well generally for two seasons. We did have injuries but Pochs style wasnt working.the build ups generally were slow. Since Jose has been managing us we haven been perfect. But our football for me has been very palatable.
When I saw the team he picked I wasnt enthralled.
We missed Ndombele to injury and we were lightweight in the CM position (zero CMs)
But I wondered what was Mourinho thinking.
Well soon I could see what it was. He was looking at the counter quickly, longer passes, more open field to enjoy our pace.
Wolves actually played us well. They were building up their plays well and still disciplined to be sharp in defence. Still we were attacking.
For them their build up didn't get them so far in the way of scores or on target shots. That's because our back line were strong and Dier and Sissoko were helping the defence a lot.
Dele and Son picked up the ball earlier,2 passes and we were downfield A good game and struggle by both teams.
If you cant appreciate that then I'm sorry,

Moura wins more headers than Harry today in the center of the Park.
I am chuffed with our win.

I know wolves were the better team yesterday, but what a hatchet job done by the MOTD2 editors. Didn’t show any of the three penalty claims, and seemed to make a real thing about Traore being targeted with cynical fouls yet skipping over the countless cynical fouls from Wolves and the borderline red card challenge from Saiss. Wolves got away with so much yesterday. Felt the highlights didn’t really represent the game fully.

I agree with JJs analysis on Motd however its not surprising to me.
One of those 2 CMs in front of the back 4 has to be the one who is more creative and thats not Dier. Not his fault, its not what he does. That leaves it to Sissoko and thats not his thing either imo.
Also this team have been drilled to play sideways, backwards and the way you're facing for years. They dont turn around!
Here's an observation.
Sanchez rarely passes forward. If Toby gives him the ball then Toby will be getting it back 99 times out of a 100. If Toby gives him the ball and is then marked up just watch the panic in Sanchez' face. He will lose the ball 99 times out of 100. Why he's doing this I dont know but it needs to stop as its putting us under pressure.
The spine of the team is currently in trouble as well.
We've got 2nd choice keeper, doing well but still, 2nd choice.
Our CB partnership is wobbly with a young CB and another whose contract is almost up.
The CM partnership has a DM who is still finding his fitness due to long term illness and we haven't really settled on who else pairs with him.
And then theres Eriksen.
Oh and we've a new coach.
If we can get top 4 with all that going on, which I think we will, then that'll be a massive achievement.
COYS
And if we actually win something it'll be unbelievable Jeff.

I didn’t post anything during the game and waited before posting to see if I'd surprised by the content of the match thread. And I'm not. We just beat a highly motivated, very well drilled wolves side at their ground in a massive 6-pointer. And yet there is still moaning. I would just like to add that they were the first top 6 side we've beaten in ages. Just enjoy it. We are now just 3 points off 4th and playing the resident of 4th next week.

This was just the kind of fixture that I'd be moaning about our inability to get a result through pure will if nothing else if he hadn't won. So on one hand; three points, job done and we actually defended the centre of the box excellently.

On the other hand, we're playing hoofball these days. The last time we had longer spells of meaningful possession was vs. Bournemouth before Ndombele went off. Other than that, it's hoping Kane wins a flick on or that we manage to play Son or Alli in behind. We wont become #good playing this way, but Mourinho knows this just as well as I do, and we'll just have to trust the process for now. Lo Celso and Ndombele was bought to fix our midfield, and I suspect they'll do just that. In time.

Our defending was much better yesterday. Teams have been carving us open and creating chances at will this season but for all their good work Wolves didn't create much. Our ball retention was shocking though. That's largely cos our midfield 2 are actually allergic to the thing, but our front 4, Kane and Son especially, weren't at the races at all. Clearly Jose is aware that our current midfield can't actually play football hence the plan to bypass them on all occasions, but we really need our attackers to hold onto the ball and do something with it for that to work. Can't fault the effort though and it's a huge result that should work wonders for our confidence. If Jose can get Ndombele up to speed and try and integrate Lo Celso, we may end up with a better season than any of us thought possible a couple of months ago.
