Standard Liège

Fryers spent the summer training with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of a proposed transfer, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a compensation package (in England, when a player under the age of 23 leaves a club at the end of his contract, his new club must pay a fee to his old club as compensation for having trained him up). Belgian club Standard Liège also expressed interest in Fryers, and as they are not an English club, they did not have to pay Manchester United compensation.[9] On 23 August 2012, Standard Liège announced that Fryers had signed a two-year contract with the club.[10]

We aren't half clever...:
Liege, you sign Zeki for 6 months, then we'll buy him off you so as not to pay Manchester United...

He's joining the development squad?? Interesting
Clearly he is a grant hall esque signing and I find it funny people suggest he will be in our first team as back up just because we signed him and the fact he hasnt come through

Ooh Fergie's not gonna be happy with us. LOL. Didn't Utd want something like 6million for him?

Didn't we already know this was the plan of action from the summer? I am sure I remember it being discussed on here back then

Not dodgy at all... :sneaky:

Seriously though it's obvious what's gone on, but there's no way there can be any trouble over it.

Levy: I give you £2mill?

Fergie: NO! Crazy man!

Levy to Standard: Get him and we'll give you £3mill in 6 months

Standard: Ok!

If as we assume this was the plan all along and Liege was only signing him due to their connections to us as a way around the British compensation rules (and of course they would profit from the deal) and he was always going to move to us in Jan

He wouldn't be played that often, just for freshness and match fitness and his move there would be more about training and keeping fit.

We wouldn't want him to get injured while with them and they probably wouldn't want him becoming integral to their team or indeed standing in the way of someone they will need to rely upon once he has moved to us.

The fact that he hasn't been playing regularly for them isn't necessarily at indication that he wasn't deemed good enough to do so or indeed that he will not end up being good enough for us.

Although it's interesting to see he has gone in to the development squad and suggests we will not seem him in the first team squad any time soon, one for the future.
