best wishes to them.

i agree that the current situation in the UK is totally mad.

From my youth things have drastically changed. Sure there was fighting and gangs and the same sort of stuff. Its just really escalated now to the point that its difficult to feel safe.

IMO this country is pretty much gone to the dogs in recent times. Its a combo of immigrants, largely illegal, and some horrible parenting.

Obviously this looks like an internal issue so thats not the case here, but even then thats crazy, jst scrap it out why pull a knife?

I really worry that I may have to raise a child in this environment one day

The present day is the least violent time in the history of mankind. It's just 24 media reports it much more.

Sorry to be pedantic, Dan, but all the statisticians agree on this one: the 20th Century was the most violent century on record (some estimates put it at around 240m violent deaths, but hardly anyone argues for less than 150m). I don't see much sign of a turnaround in the 21st Century, sadly.

I certainly hope Dav and his mum recover quickly, and that this man is brought to justice.

Shocked when I heard this on SSN earlier. Hope he can make a full recovery. Wasn't he quite bad recently with a suspected broken neck? Poor lad.

Sorry to out pedantise you but no one was conducting world wide surveys during the middle ages.

Very sad news indeed! I really hope Calum makes a full recovery and the bastard who did it will be caught and imprisoned for a long time.

Well BC, what we do have are historians (in every period of history) who together give us a sense of what has happened. And in any given century (certainly over the last 2000 years), we *do* have a good idea of wars that were fought, plagues that were endured, and so on.

This is obviously straying from the sad news posted above, but just to say, if the history books are anything to go by at all, the bloodshed of the 20th Century simply dwarves the bloodshed in the previous 19 centuries put together. Take a look, for example, at:

Not life threatening, the ambulance staff are quoted as saying he was stablised at the scene. As i said in the other thread, bloody harsh thing to happen to anyone, let alone designed to threaten your career as, what is in essence, the player of a game.

Why's this thread here? There's one in General Football, he's not a Spurs player anymore

Bore-off with your student tat, some of us have read all of that 20 years ago.

The bloke has taken a knife in August 2009, stabbed a bloke several times, stabbed his Mum too. Where is there any time for justification with humour as in the earlier posts?

and the reason it's the most peaceful time of mankind is because the main "super powers" have developed planks of wood with nails in them so big, if one country takes a swipe at another it'll turn into nail-in-plank-holocaust and we'll all die.

Winner? No-one.

If there is going to be war, there has to be a point. If the war is futile then it's also suicidal and completely pointless. Nuclear weapons make war futile, hence the relatively small scale "skirmish" type combat situations we see now, and the massively reduced casualty rate.

At the battle of Waterloo, in only 4 days, over 25,000 men died. And not sniped from a distance died, blown into pieces died. Hit in the chest with a cannonball that went through you and killed the 5 men behind you kinda died. Bayonetted through the stomach whilst you stare into the eyes of the man who's doing it kinda died.

Even Americans can't beat them stats

Hope Calum and his Mum make speedy and full recoveries.

As for the off topic, this makes below makes sense, wheras counter arguments of ignorance regarding earlier mortality have no basis.

On the discussion of the 20th century being the most violent - it was during a period where killing other people became much easier, and globalisation and industrialisation came to the fore - as the 20th century progressed, it became comparatively much less violent. Also, one must realise that as the population has increased so dramatically, it is only natural that more people would die because of war. These factors; increased population, easier means of killing, and globalisation and industrialisation, not to even mention the increased profligacy of the media, would lead credence to the 20th century being the most violent. This is far from meaning that we have been regressing, though, as in the late 20th century and the 21st century, crime has been on the decline.
