It's a beautiful thought but it won't happen. Not gettin' the fourth spot anyway.

Our results at home against Stoke, Wolves and Hull will haunt us when the league is finished. Togheter with 4 dropped points away against Everton and Villa will be too much for us to come back from.

Michey, what do we need to come back from? We are in 4th, it's the other teams that need to do the catching up on us.

I thought i made that quite clear in my post  It will be very clear after our game number 38.

If nothing extreme happens during the transferwindow where we replace our benchplayers that are there just because it looks good, teams like manc and pool will catch up pretty fast.

I don't like it any more than you but it will happen.

The trouble is they only need to catch up by 2 points, 1 point & goal difference (and 2 of the teams have a game in hand).
I know everyone's dropping points but I honestly think we'll need some big points against the top 3 AND City and Villa to make 4th now.

I've woken up this morning even more fuming than I was last night. I like you SS18 mate and respect what you write mate but you are seriously clutching at straws if you think we are gonna finish 4th. The fact of the matter is when the chips are down and we are expected to get results, we BOTTLE it. No matter how you try to dress it up last nights performance both on and off the pitch were not good enough. We played a Lpool team short of FIVE big players for them (Agger, Johnson, Benayoun, Torres & Gerrard) aswell as a team that got beat by a team in the relegation zone of the championship a week ago, and quite frankly did not have the belief that we could beat them.

As I said at the start of the season we would finish 8th, 7th at best this season. I stand by that.

Sunny, I never stated that I think we will finish 4th, I just said that we can finish 4th - this much is evident since we are still in 4th place and I think if you can be 4th after 22 games you can sure as hell be 4th after 38. My pre season prediction for us was 5th, which would be no disgrace at all but 4th is still very much up for grabs between us, Villa, Man City and Liverpool - all of us will drop points, all of us will have fans saying right up until May that the other teams are better than their respective team and bring up one game examples of why they can't finish 4th - we can't all be wrong.

Of course last night was disappointing, but I don't see how we should be giving up on 4th now, when we are 4th as it is - it just seems defeatist to say we can't maintain a position we've been maintaining since August.

There's quite a famous quote someone said about aiming high and echoes of glory, we should be doing this.

I still believe we can do it. However I think the fact that the words knee jerk are used quite often on here, surely because they are used quite often means it is not a knee jerk?

When does the knee jerking stop and the realisation of a problem start?

Touche. How many times can you say "it was one of those days" and shrug your shoulders before you realize you need to do something about ?

Good post. Personally i've got concerns that need to be addressed in the window (like a suitable backup for Lennon - Modric on the right doesn't work Harry!) but I don't think we should be hitting the panic button just yet. I do think that some of the first 11 need a kick up the arse though - people keep saying we have a strong squad, in which case we need to use it by giving some of the fringe players another go.

I've seen nothing over the past few games to suggest Defoe + Crouch is a top4 strikeforce so give Pav or Keane a go. Modric and Krancjar on the wings doesn't work because we lose all natural width so give Bentley, GDS or Rose a go etc.

I admire your optimism, but if you read your last paragraph (with which so many people would agree, BTW) and then realize that this is very unlikely to happen, you may understand why more and more people are getting a bit concerned.

Ignore the knee-jerks - good thread.

I am hugely disappointed (I imagine the knee-jerks believe by saying 'we woz' shit' that they support the team more, are more passionate or summit:shrug:). I do, however, think we dominated at Anfield (ANFIELD) for good sections of the match, were clearly the better footballing side, and reduced the once mighty Reds to setting themselves out for a home game, much the same as relegation candidates do for matches at the Lane.

'Arry's selection/tactics and substitutions weren't his best...but, and this is a very important matter, Howard Webb was the match referee:-|

The bottom line is we lost. Dress it up however you want my friend but the end result was a defeat. Arse had the ball 63% odd of the CC semi at WHL 2 years back yet they lost 5-1, that is the only stat that counts. For all the play we had last night, what did we create? Fact is we were clueless with the ball and like usual resorted to pumping it Wimbledon style to Rodney Trotter. That just about says it al for me.....

I'm not dressing anything up.
We were not clueless with the ball - IMHO.
Fact is, without an absolute arse of a ref making an absolute arse of a decision we would have been level at a time when we were quuite clearly in teh ascendency and there were not really set up to come at us. Dress that up how you will.

That's all us Spurs fans ever moan about, the injustices against us. Simple fact is after going one down after 6 mins we had 84 mins to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and get a result against a poor Lpool team, we did'nt.....

Come the end of the season we will yet again have hard luck stories to talk about whilst the Sky 4 will be looking forward to CL footy again as they just get on with it and get results!

INjustices isn't all we moan about - but the fact, as seen as you like to talk facts, is that agains tthe Big 4 we have been on the wrong end of several match defining decisions, whereas insofar as I can remeber (and I have an excellent memory, and I am very honest in regard to things like this) I can never, ever remember us getting a match defining decision in our favour against one of the Big 4.

It is also a fact that but for an arsehole decision by an arsehole ref we would have equalised at a time when we were quite clearly in the ascendant and they just weren't wet up or equipped to come at us. I must alos point out that this was only part of my assessment. As I said, we actually outplayed them for large periods and, generally, were quite clearly the better footballing team. So, all put together, we were a little disappointing, and disappointed, but, to me, it is ludicrous when we are actually the incumbents in 4th to say it is just impossible for us to finish 4th. We may actually not finish 4th, and if we don't my analysis will seek to include all factors, not just dodgy refereeing decisions - but it will almost certainly include dodgy refereeing decisions.

like the orginal posters optimism but the fact we 'outplayed' villa and city means nothing if we cant get a result against a severly weakened Liverpool side, No Torres,Gerrard,Johnson I mean c'mon and not just that but we were awful, so were they to be honest but we just hit long ball after long-ball it was so frustrating!

And like someone else pointed out we have some horrendous fixtures towards the end of the season so we need to really pick up good results now!

Still really pieved with our defeat and I believe there are a number of players who didn't show their potential, however, it is a massive however too, the dis-allowed goal for Defoe was an outrage of almost Mendes proportions.
I hate to sound like blaming officials but that goal should have stood and then I'm sure we'd have a different outlook on things.
It was like when we were one nil down at Chelsea and there was the Keane non-penalty-at times I wonder if there's any point playing against the Sky 4.

Too right. Absolute proof that it's about a season and not one or two bad games. Some ridiculous comments too...

Harry for Prime Minister.
