Guaranteed if we were linked with Gyan this time last year 80% of this thread would be 'he cant play up top by himself, he wont work with vdv (if we had vdv), he isnt better than defoe, he isnt better than crouch, he isnt better than pav, he wont be able to play on a cold tuesday in stoke"

fickle

/

he isnt a massive upgrade on our current strike force anyway (except crouch, so if we get a chance give them 200m and crouch just to get the fucker out of our squad), should be a last resort/crouch replacement imo.

Gyan is not a world beater but if we'd had his number of goals instead of Defoe's last season then we might well have qualified for the CL.

Gyan scored 11 in 33 last season, not an upgrade on Pav for sure.

He suits our system better as he can play up front on his own. Pav has shown that he can't.

11 in 33 when largely playing upfront on your own and infront of a relatively poor midfield is a very good effort.

I think he's better than Pav in every department. Stronger, quicker, better touch, better at linking up with others and as good when it comes to finishing.

He's not the superstar we want/need but he's better than what we currently have.

Agree.

I don't want Gyan to be our main target, but if we sign a Falcao-level striker and Gyan, then I would be very happy (with hopefully 2 or 3 leaving).

Our front line lacked pace and directness last season which gyan would improve. I would swap crouchy and 10-15m any day of the weak. We need something different upfront and we need some work ethic. All our strikers are very lazy and don't link up well.

The thing is, I think Gyan would improve us but not so substantially that reaching our goals for next season suddenly look a whole lot more likely.

In fact, if Defoe actually wakes up next season (if he's still here) I personally don't think the difference between him and Gyan would be so great. I think a lot may disagree, but that's easy to do so when looking only at the season just gone.

Would much prefer odemwingge to gyan.

Good finisher and technically superior to gyan.

Got great 'feet'. Would link up with VdV well.

Gyan is Brian Dean.

I suppose with the tour in RSA there will be even less ITK or possible chance of a signing.
This window really ain't looking good.

Just watched on YouTube all the goal from the 09/10 season and a the beginning Defoe was awesome!!!!
I'm not his biggest fan by the way but if he can recapture that form he is by far our best striker at the club and miles better than some of the players we have been linked with. Just a thought.......

Defoe was good that season upto (and obviously including) the Wigan game at WHL.
After that ego took over from ambition, and to date he's not recovered..

While Gyan might not be an improvement on quality, he (IMO) would fit our team much better than the strikers we have at the moment. So in a way it would be an improvement.

We all would love to sign top class players, but so does every fan of every other club. I just think some people think signing the likes of Rossi and Falcao is an easy thing to do

Nail on the head for me.

Tell you what though, I think Odemwinge is a much better technical player - and I quite like him - but Gyan would fit the dynamic of the team better.

Still dreaming that a certain Columbian might join us though

cheers Storts!!!!

If gyan was our ambition of targets , i think id top myself, average player at best with the odd few games, just like OSHI said he is the african version of Pav - only advantage with gyan is that he is more speedier - but he shoulod not even be on our Z- List of players let alone anywhere near our A-List of targets

Have Colombia been knocked out yet?

I know falcao is a long shot, but I've got literally nothing else to cling to this TW!
Tragic ain't it?!

The thing folk need to remember is that either the first, or pretty close to the first, player Redknapp was linked with when he took the manager's job at the Lane was Monsieur Falcao. Some of you may think it is a long-shot, but he has to know of our interest, and some players get turned on by perserverance.

I'm pretty sure there are people in here who have checked the bottom of their teacups or the toilet bowl after a heavy deposit to make sure there were no transfer hints, so I'd be gobsmacked if all potential sources of ITK were not being monitored.

Maybe that is where yellow & green came from :eek:mg:

It's got nothing to do with underrating Gyan because I probably rate him higher than all our strikers but I don't care what anyone says, if he's the only striker we bring in I consider that a massive dissapointment.

IMO, just Gyan = Europa League again.

Of course if we get Gyan and more of a sort of striker that can take us up a level that would be absolutely fantastic.

I agree with this.

But how do you know who are targets are ? It surely isn't based upon the ITK which is all over the shop. Our only confirmed target this window has been Rossi.

Exactly.

Seriously, anyone contemplating Odemwingie (that means you, Pinky) needs to realise the guy is 30. He's had one half decent season at West Brom, and he is older than Pav.

So in 3 years Harry hasn't been able to pull it off. In the summer where we were in CL he wasn't even remotely linked. Yet now it will happen? Feels even more remote now. I wish you hadn't even brought this up as now I am more depressed.

That's one interpretation.
Another interpetation would be, as I said, that some players actually state the amount of time a club has been keeping tabs on him as one of the motivating factors for him signing for them. I think BerbaGit said that, though not 100% sure...maybe someone could confirm it:shrug:

Odemwinge is 29 or 30, not good enough to take us to the next level, no thank you.

This window gets more depressing by the day.

I have never believed that Rossi, Falcao or Adebayor were attainable but I sincerely hope that we are after somebody better than Gyan who has a worse than 1 in 3 goalscoring rate.

With all the bad news, it is time for Levy to make a statement (by actions rather than words). Vucinic, Forlan and Parker are all available and would all improve the team. I know that Forlan and Parker don't fit Levy's age profile but they are far better options than blowing £15m+ on a crap striker who averages less than 1 goal in 3 games. While he's at it, test Everton's resolve to hang onto Arteta.

Go on Levy, you know it makes sense.

The only thing that makes sense to Levy is padding his bank account. In all seriousness, only the delusional would think that Levy would spend 15 on Diarra or 20 on Gyan. He hasn't spent more than 9 million on a player since we were staring down relegation.

So you keep reminding us, but then Harry has said that Levy will sanction the spending of big cash for the right player, as have various ITK's and paper reports.

Then you recall Levy put in several big money bids for players at the end of the last window, which I believe you dismiss as PR stunts if I recall your previous posts on the subject.

That being said I think there is at least enough evidence to suggest that if the right player for the right price were available Levy would sanction a deal for relatively big money to not call those who believe he will delusional.

I agree you make a decent point, but i think saying the very notion of such a transfer occurring this window is delusion is harsh.

I believe both Harry and Levy have said there is money to spend and personally I'm not so dismissive of such signings happening this window (I just think Levy will continue to seek the best deal instead of spending wrecklessly)

How depressing is this that weve gone from talking about Rossi, Falcao and Vucinic to Gyan and Odemwingge. Tomorrow it will be Bellamy and Chopra at this rate. Come on DL, give us something pleaaaaaaasee
