I believe Adebayor has been a key reason of our success this year and it is vital that we retain him. He really puts in and seems to be really enjoy being at Spurs and apparently gets on well with his team mates.
A possible way is to keep Adebayor at Spurs after this year is to think outside the square.
I recall a previous note about a significant proportion of his salary is returned to Togo as aid or similar.
Why not try and establish a youth football academy in Togo - the Tottenham Adebayor Academy. Engage Adebayor as patron while he still plays and once he retires he can have a more active role. Try and establish it with a high school and a boarding house so that you improve the life of those selected with education and diet as well as developing their football skills.
All kids enrolled in the academy would need to sign a contract that gives Tottenham a first and last option to sign them. Perhaps as well the Tottenham Academy team should also visit each year to train aside them and play a friendly game. This would be priceless experience for them as well.
If Adebayor is on 175,000 per week with half paid by us then perhaps we can pay him 100,000 and commit 40,000 per week to the academy. If this is a 5 year commitment then the total cost is 10 million. If we uncover just 1 player then this is good value – look at the very average calibre of players with a 10m transfer fee. Also we keep Adebayor and give him a post football career.
I think it is a win win situation.
