A new primary school and 250 affordable homes are to be built in Haringey as part of the deal struck with Tottenham Hotspur over the club's plans for a £400 million new stadium in the borough.
The move is designed to offset the absence of on-site affordable housing at the Premier League club's new stadium site where 300 luxury homes will be built after Haringey Council reduced section 106 terms to get the scheme moving.
The club is working with Newlon Housing Trust to deliver the affordable homes. Newlon has previously worked with Spurs' north London neighbours Arsenal on homes for key workers built as part of the Emirates Stadium development.
But in an interview with 24housing magazine, Tottenham's finance director Matthew Collecott recoils at the suggestion that the club can learn a thing or two about delivering affordable homes from their arch rivals.
“Seriously, Arsenal did very well,” he said. “But higher Islington property prices have helped them.”
Newlon Housing Trust chief executive Mike Hinch says the group has already worked with Tottenham to deliver more than 30 affordable homes, offered at social and affordable rents, at Berland Court near Northumberland Park station.
Subject to planning permission, it is hoped the new school - set to be run as a Free School - will be ready for use in September 2015.
Grant Cornwall, Chief Executive Officer of the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Foundation, said: “We have a strong commitment to local schools in the neighbourhood and we look forward to welcoming and working closely with the Free School as part of that wider school family.”
Newlon's Haringey development will provide a mix of new social, intermediate and shared ownership homes.
