No I think you are missing the point, after moving up from around the mid table area to the coat tails of top four we have pretty much trod water for 7 years on fifth, sure Harry got us to one CL and was cruelly denied a second, but the reality is that to get regular CL much less make a serious challenge for the title or indeed winning the CL you need a balanced team with realk quality and a depth of quality in the squad. In the past years our weaknesses in certain key areas and in the depth of quality and those failings have meant we have missed out. Now at times you can buy young players of real potential and with resale potential to enable us to afford more new replacements if they leave, but the fact of the matter is those quality players that ideally you wish to keep to give a fair crack at regular CL football and to seriously challenge have moved on and still we have failed to fill the team with a balance and quality necessary. You then reach a critical stage where you need to decide if you continue to tread water or go for it and if you decide you want to go for it then sometimes you have to fill the key gaps with players that can deliver now rather than maybe 2 years time when maybe one or two other existing key players have left. It's not a matter of simply signing potential that can prove good in a year or two years and ultimately sell for big profits but to get one or two players that you can have far greater belief that they can affect things now. Obviously every new signing is a gamble but when you go for players that have proven their quality over a number of seasons then the odds are stacked better in your favour than a player who has done it once or maybe not really done it at all but looks to have the potential too

The benefits can outweigh the costs too, if we had bought Soldato last season or Negredo for say £25 mill and this season earned £35 mill from CL then not only would we have made a tidy profit but also have a fully paid striker for the following three years. As it is we still have to pay for a striker now and have no CL revenue

There are other factors and I imagine things like raising funding, sponsorship, naming rights etc are possibly in the mind of the board right now, far easier to raise funds when you have one of the top names in football playing for you and far better still if you are seen to be competing against the best teams in the world.

At the end of the day the success of a football club is measured by it's trophy cabinet not it's balance sheet, for sure it's an important part but you can't get hung up on focussing on players that might make a long term profit and lose sight of players that can give you shorter term success

Maybe we didn't have the money last year?

But Levy runs a business, which measures its success by profit, ability to generate profit and value of the business. His gambles have tended to be low risk, rather than speculate to accumulate.

For sure but now he has to raise a huge amount of money for the stadium and maybe he is coming to the conclusion that being a CL competitor might make that a lot easier

We will only know at the close of the window (or maybe sooner with a bit of luck) but there is so much speculation on potential signings (yes I know we've been there before) that maybe circumstances and needs are pushing him towards taking a gamble on gaining the success that might make his job of raising investment a lot easier

Just robbed from the Soldado thread:

storts from COYS:

Sell on fee shouldnt be of concern, if he does the job we belive he can scoring goals he will pay for himself, and yes its close.

This definitely doesn't sound like the sort of thing Levy would say, or even think.

It will be so weird to potentially have a nearly settled squad together by August. Plenty of time to focus solely on sales and then some bargain hunting hopefully.

well - just read through more than 200 pages of the thread - from Friday's thread onwards.

Only dropped in once for a brief period while on holiday in Egypt. At that point it sounded like Benteke was near enough done - then watching the ups and downs we've had since then has been insane - as have the mood swings of people in here! I wanted Benteke, so seeing that Villa tweet on Friday's trhead was a bolt from the blue - but then since then we've signed Chadli and now being linked to a whole host of 20m players! Brilliant.

But = round of applause to you guys for basically being absolutely mental! ;)

Valencia pay pretty low wages. What we are offering Soldado, allegedly, is a good increase for him but its pretty low in the grand scheme of things considering the size of the fee.

So when you think of what Villa would of cost in wages, with much less sell on value, the whole package to get Soldado doesn't look too bad.

If we sign Soldado, we're getting to the stage where I don't want any more players!
There'll have to be a fair few outs and loans but if we just snapped up a couple of young players that would be enough for me.

Like you said earlier, I don't want players like Sigurdsson or Holtby marginalised or leaving. Dempsey, Lennon, Defoe, Huddlestone, Parker can all wend their way for all I care but I think we should be careful cos a team stocked with new players will need time to gel, and we need to hit the ground running.

We have just released/releasing players like Gallas, Bentley, Gomes, Hudd, Parker - nearly 200k a week going out- should compensate our 3 new incoming Chadli, Paulinho &possibly Soldado

Weird summer. A Brit wins Wimbledon, it is sunny and Spurs may just finally buy that elusive forward they need. The world is going CRAZY!

Potl has links to Qpr doesn't he? I wonder if he'll comment on the Remy rumours.

Even so MrP this is looking like a total 40m deal (4yr ?), do you really think Levy is the type that thinks "fuck the business, if scores goals we're all good"

It would be the most blasé scenario ever in the history of Levy.

Do you also not find it a bit odd that Levy is about to throw down 26m euro on a 28yo (no matter that he's better than Benteke) but baulked at paying similar for a 22yo Benteke ?

I know Baldini is out there and ITK's are saying it's close, but it will be the most out of normal MO transfer we have made under Levy by fucking miles.

I'm not saying it's not going to happen, what the fuck do I know, but if it does, it's either for much less than broadcast or there has genuinely been a massive diversion from our transfer policy of the last 8 years.

LLM over on 606:

Baldini and the deputy Levy are there in Spain. You would have to say the deal is close because you need two signatures to sign a player. If we were just negotiating Baldini would be alone.

I think people have overlooked this!! This is massive!!
I did say this alot lot earlyier tonite in the soldado thread! I said it wasnt just baldini there in spain hint hint ;) ;)
And as LLM says u need both to sign the player and we dont send over baldini AND Levys minion if we are just negotiating! The minion is there to cross the T's and Dot the i's!!
