Am I the only one who feels that Dawson has done nothing but be exactly what you want in a captain? This is a guy that was all but written off and he rejected the move to QPR because he wanted to earn his keep. At that time he was pretty much 3rd/4th choice and when Kaboul went down he righted the ship.

If it weren't for Dawson we would have most likely been up shit's creek with Gallas or Caulker starting a majority of the matches. He was completely solid throughout the year and at times he was our most consistent CB.

I don't mind if Bale's a vice captain for when Dawson is not on the pitch, but not as the outright captain. Dawson's been far too great in that role for us.

all the characteristics to be a captain? yes.

the quality to be the first name on a team sheet for a top four side? no.

dawsons bravery and last ditch blocks are IMO not worth the fact he is a terrible footballer.

lovely bloke. loves the club to bits therefore is fine to stay as back up.

Although I agree with the general sentiment, have you heard of the phrase there is no such thing as bad press. Bale keeping quite keeps Tottenham Hotspur in newspapers around the global raising our profile. Are Levy, Bale and his agent smart enough to agree to keep quiet and let our name fill back pages, I would hazard a guess at yes.

Totally agree. The coverage this is getting is insane. I bet Levy is loving it. Whilst everyone is assuming we'll be under immense pressure, Levy is most likely lapping it right up.

That's a good point. You could very well be right. Everyone would know "that's the club that rejected Real Madrid..." and that can mean a lot to attracting players to the club.

It can also show to potential sponsors/investors that we are a club that are serious about our ambitions and a world record transfer fee isn't enough for us to sell our prized asset as we want to achieve more as a club.

Yep. Also Dawson is clearly more Captain material than Bale and was fantastic last season, but he is also professional and i'm sure would be happy to give the arm band over to Gareth if it meant he would stay for another year or more.

Just for the discussion, Bale isn't even the Welsh captain, Speed chose Ramsey despite being by far the inferior player. From an outsider looking in at Bale I think he doesn't have the necessary characteristics to be a captain, he seems quite shy in that regards. It would also be cringing for me to see them strip Daws who is much more of a leader of men than Bale is and would smack of "small time" by the club, ie making a player who might leave club captain so he doesn't despite not being suited for the job.

yep wouldn't surprise me either, whilst we are playing a guessing game, spurs (Levy) will clearly know what is going on and will have had meetings and planned ahead.

I would love Bale as captain it means he will be with us this season. Its just an arband. Seeing him lead the side out will give the players and fans a huge lift

The captain needs to be a shoe in starter which bale is. We have 4 1 million percent guarenteed starters - Lloris walker bale and soldado and out of those 4 Bale is the best candidate

Bale as captain has some merit.

-There are new players arriving at the club who will see him as the icon of the team, they will have no issue with him being captain.
-Dawson is likely to be in and out of the team
-His performances over the last 6 months of the season were talismanic, he's earnt status as a 'team leader'
-In enmeshes his status within the club, and with the responsibility it would carry will make him more integral and a greater part of the club off the field, potentially giving him an increased sense of responsibility & loyalty to the club.
-It shows him his value to all within the club; he is wanted here

All of the above may just help in a long term sneaky strategy to keep him longer, and if that's the case, then why the fuck not?

so if Dawson no longer possesses the magical armband of captaincy does he automatically lose the leadership qualities that made him captain? i'm sure Dawson would be the last player to complain if Bale was made captain...... i think he'd rather be on the pitch more, captain or not.

Isn't Club Captain the role that was given to Deadly Ledley in his last couple of seasons? If so, it's a vacant role and since GB is by far and away the biggest icon in the current squad, it seems appropriate. Very different to team captain....

haha trying to strap an armband onto him in hope he stays is nothing but a fools hope. It didn't work with Campbell or Steven Carr, if he wants to go he'll go...when Levy says so. Captains armband want make a lick of difference

The captain thing builds on 'brand Bale', which we're clearly trying to cultivate. On the pitch it makes little difference, there are leaders throughout the side and in training someone will be in charge of that position. Lloris at the back, a defender calling offsides, a midfielder geeing the others up.

I've become so disillusioned with this saga that I currently feel like don't think I care anymore if Bale goes or stays, it's exhausting and distorting my views on him on a personal level. I just wish I could say unequivocally that I believe his representatives/him are definitely not behind any of this but I can't...
