Without hearing the interview spoken and the tone of voice, it's hard to see if that's just been spun.

Did Mills let it slip or was it just a hypothetical question? I'd go for the latter.
Pretty decent article actually, guy seems to know his stuff.

All that is a generic sort of response to a question about forcing players to stay.

Whether Bale wants to stay or not, Mills is right that you can't force a player to play for a club.... What he fails to state is that you can make it very difficult for players to act like ****s, however clubs usually just sell them to save the hassle. To stop ****ish behaviour:

Every time a player fails to come to training, you fine him a weeks wages for breach of contract.

Every interview saying he wants out costs him a weeks wages for failing to adhere a club directive.

Every time a player refuses to play, you fine him two weeks wages and report him to UEFA and FIFA.

You tell your manager/head coach to tell the media that the player is refusing to play, but the club is adamant he will see out his contract. If a player is refusing to play he will quickly lose commercial sponsors so that will stop sharpish.

This leaves you with a mightly f**ked off player but he can't even get his contract terminated by CAS as you are offering him playing time.

Interesting that SSN's news box says "Gareth Bale turns up for training as expected" and then says Spurs have said he is "not for sale despite interest from Real Madrid" - bit of a come down from their previous stance! Is the media starting to realise that what they have been pumping out may not be strictly true or has someone had a word?

Is that what's going round now?

The thing that annoys me is that there's no firm bid confirmation so it's all bullshit.

With Rooney, it has been confirmed United have rejected two firm bids.
With Suarez it has been confirmed Liverpool have rejected two firm bids.
With Fabregas it has been confirmed Barca have rejected three firm bids.

All this spin and posturing and yet no bids have appeared.

fortunately that's rare, not even Modric acted up once the window closed and his 'dream move' to chelsea vanished.

There did seem to be hope from the media that he turned into an arsehole and didn't turn up where he was required to be.

What I'm finding far more disturbing is the way that SkySportsNews website has further integrated with SkyBet, by reporting a spurious story they can dramatically increase revenues at SkyBet, especially in transfer market betting

I think the tide is turning towards a bit of reality with the media! Not the foregone conclusion they all thought/wanted, they will move on to other bits of bullshit soon!

Bale absolutely loves his football and doesn't appear to be the petulant type, unlike say Gallas who it seems would score own goals to get moves or Adebayor who simply wouldn't play. I couldn't see Bale doing anything else but coming back and playing his heart out as usual. Which I'm sure is why he hasn't handed in a transfer request or spoken out publicly as it would make it easier for him to just come back and play.

Bale seems to be quite awkward and self concious, so I think it would affect him massively if he was as vocal as Modric was and then had to come back into the fold.

I think image rights is too important for him. Also I think his head is turning back bec there actually has ZERO bid from Real.

He may be a pawn for CR contract..... he was made a clown, tbh.

anyone who is about to embark on making themselves a 'Brand' is not self conscious -

Look at David Beckham - comes across all shy and coy but obviously has no issue doing anything his PR machine suggest.

Sorry but i dont buy the whole awkward and self conscious thing at all - he is a Global superstar - he knows it and loves it.

Same. I'm happy we seem to not be distracted by all this and are quietly going after our targets whilst everyone else focuses on a transfer that may not happen. If we can continue to add a few more players of genuine quality we will be able to hedge any Bale move.

I thought that interview was quite telling in our plans to keep Bale for another season to be honest.

The 'you cant keep unhappy players' seems like a generic comment as others have pointed out.

But when he talks about the catch-22 between not being able to keep bale as we are not in the champions league, but needing bale to get in the champions league in the first place, he then says that is why we are investing heavily this summer - to make sure we get into the champions league next year. Ie. We know Bale wants champions league to stay, therefore we are investing heavily in the squad this year so that NEXT YEAR we are definitely in the champions league and then Bale will decide to stay.

For me it sounds very much like Mills is stating how we are making efforts to keep Bale NEXT YEAR. Just my onion though

This is really odd... no itk on defenders. Hmmm.... even not a press leak by selling club.

Kind of strange. :)

I've questioned this very practise before. It seems extremely open to abuse.

Why the fuck would Mills come out with that though? All the media outlets now will run with it as a direct quote on Bale. Idiotic some of these people high up our club honest to God.
