A bad performance from a ref nowadays is always considered match-fixing by some- they only say it to make themselves feel better.

Given the competition is in a country filled with protests focused partly against corruption in the Brazilian government and the competition is organised by an organisation deep in corruption accusations themselves, questions are always going to be asked when you have THAT sort of refereeing.

Personally I don't see the media love-in for Neymar. For me he wasn't thaaaaat good tonight and personally think he is so selfish, so many times could've passed earlier than did or pass when he didn't but decided to see if can dribble his way past a player

He's class. The Brazilian team is pretty average compared to those of recent years and so all pressure seems to be on Neymar to deliver and has been since he was about 19.

A bit like Silva I think today go to them.

I imagine they will be much more relaxed in the next couple of games.

It's just the matches I have seen him play in (granted only a few for Barca and a few for Brazil) I have never really been impressed

There is quality in that brazil team but Scolari is just a boring dirty cheat

if we are to look at soldado for example. i never wanted him either, i said he was the wrong fit for this team and he's proven to be a monumental waste of money ... that said the guy is desperate to come good and he works his bollocks off, i want him to succeed. paulinho on the otherhand has such a blasé attitude, i can take an average player if they give their all but paulinho doesn't even do that.

I love watching Luka. He was immense tonight, bossed it.

Disallowed goal was questionable as well. Fair challenge by Olic IMO.

perisic was quality tonight, i had never seen him play. Impressive
He's been quality for a while and you must of seen him score against Arsenal in CL for Dortmund, he scored a volley

BTW you disagreed with 2 years ago when i said that Isco would be a better player than Carzola :p

I've been milling around the house since the game ended with this real sense of deflation that I can't quite put my finger on. Of course it is possible that the ref had a bad game, but is also very possible that something else was at play here (pun intended), especially when you take into account what is going on outside the stadium walls.

I've been lucky enough to see several World Cup tournaments, but I honestly can't ever remember feeling this concerned or dejected about the rest of the tourney after the first game. Sure, there have been shit, ponderous openers, but nothing like what happened tonight.

I strongly believe in intuition and I definitely know I am not alone in thinking this judging by the comments throughout and after the game.

well first and foremost i want spurs to succeed but we're not going to do that with average uncommitted players like paulinho. you may think you're a better fan than i am by supporting players like this but really you're just promoting averageness, he could get away with the cowardly side of his game if he were as talented as a bale/modric/vdv but he's not even jermaine jenas, let alone those three. if i'm proven right in the process then that's just a bonus but at the end of the day i want the best for tottenham and paulinho is not it, no matter how much you don't want to see it.

Yes Yes we know you said so first.

But lets be honet you never gave the bloke a chance, so stop preteding you have.

You might know a lot about football and players and know a good one from a bad one before the rest of us but you know something I know when a someone has absolutely no class in the way he goes about making his point. I couldn't give a flying fuck about being a better fan or supporter and at £50K+ a week I doubt very much if Paulinho needs me to back him up on an internet forum and your probably right he more than likely doesn't give a shit about THFC. But when you don't rate a player god you fucking bore some of us with your endless snidey little remarks.

He's a player I like, but tonight he was below average. Apart from a couple of decent crosses, quite a few good Croatian moves broke down due to his poor passing and decision making.

Rakitic and Modric on the other hand, were bloody class.

Honestly I thought Rakitic had a quiet game and Perisic was excellent... I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

2 glasses of rum and coke later and I'm still trying to make sense of that debacle tonight ...

No it's not, probably. I don't blame the ref, it's not his fault he's not up to the job. But sticking in an inexperienced referee in the opening game of a WC in Brazil, what did FIFA think would happen. The chances of him fucking up were extremely high. And he did.

Have to agree with that. The ref was very excited to give the penalty, and then get his yellow card out. That was definitely the most important moment in the game and he got it completely wrong.

However, best moment in the match has to go to Charlie asking/gesturing to the ref if he was gonna swap shirts with Neymar, as he was being substituted. Classic, especially as the refs goofy grin as he shook hands with Neymar must have been pretty riling.

Okay. I've been mulling over this for 12 months but I'm finally baffled enough to ask.

What exactly does Paulinho do?

Very dodgy,.... Alves a lucky boy, Olic with close to a fair challenge, but that penalty?..... Reallllly.....

But if you want to see the real template for home advantage, then see Argentina 1978 - Junta and all ;)

What an awful first game. Embarrassing even.

Terrible advert for the sport.
