How many Russians/Ukrainians have made it in England? Rebrov pav shevchenko ( sp) came with a better reputations and failed. Would be a massive risk IMO

Kanchelskis - amazing player. More importantly a Russian/Ukrainian Winger.

I wish people would stop using this dumb argument.

You do realise that 5 years ago you could have said the same thing about Belgians? A few years earlier about Africans, Italians, Germans or the French?

How many Russians/Ukrainians have actually played in England? Do you think that sample size is large enough to draw any conclusion from it at all?

Footballers are individuals and need to be judged as such. There isn't some magic "can't play in the Premiership" gene carried by 143 million Russians and 45 million Ukrainians. You can make a valid argument based on the strengths and weaknesses of a particular league that a footballer plays in but that doesn't hold water when that player has performed well in European and International football. Konoplyanka may or may not adapt well to English football if he ever arrives on these shores but that has sweet FA to do with which country he was born in.

Your right it doesn't matter what country they are from, what does matter is the standard and pace of the league they play in. The EPL is much faster and more physical than the Russian league and most leagues for that matter that's why some players such as proven internationals and players who have done well in champ league come to England and struggle

There have been tons of great players who come from leagues which are questionable at best.

Would like to see Konoplyanka happen. We were terrible down the left last season using Siggy, Chadli and Eriksen out of position. We were also very predictable and Konoplyanka would be a big improvement in that department. Rumoured interest in Griezmann and Draxler would be a waste of time and effort IMO.

Really I never knew that Sherlock.
There have been many more that have failed also
I guess the real question is, "what's your point?" We should avoid any risk all together and only buy EPL players? Which still comes with a huge risk as players don't always play well on different teams even within the same league.

There's a level of risk everywhere, for every nationality and every league. You have to take those risks in order to improve.

My point is why pay 12m for this guy when we already have players with the same talent already at the club

I'm not totally convinced the guys we have are of his talent.

I think eriksen Townsend chadli and lamella will play in the wide areas next season not sure he would improve our 1st 11 and IMO not worth us taking a risk buying him

I think Eriksen and Lamela are better plus I've always had a big soft spot for Chadli even though his first season was not good.

That all being said I think Konoplyanka @12mil even as a squad player to begin with is a great investment. Almost all those guys can be operating across the front 3 so there's potentially room for depth (we do need to sell deadweight: Siggy, etc.). The rumours about his wage demands are concerning and if true I would not take the risk if that were the case.

He has real pace and puts fullbacks on their arse - including our own - one of the quickest in the PL. Most importantly he likes playing on the left, where as Lennon and Andros, our only two genuinely pacey players like the right.

No disrespect to Chadli or Andros, Kono is a better player. Has more ability than both players. If we can get him in then we should do so. 12m is nothing for a player with his ability.

Agreed. Don't think it's an insult at all to them to suggest Kono is a better player. Both Chadli and Townsend can, and I believe will, be valued contributors next season nonetheless even with a better LW acquisition.
