Yeh that's a slightly strange one. I've heard him use it before and this is what he's referring to. Obviously he means that those are the players that hold the squad together. In American sports where we have salary caps, its difficult to build a squad full of superstars, no matter how much money your owners have. So teams need role players that they can get for relatively low wages who come in and make a difference. So guys who are experienced pros, like Bradley Orr, or guys who can come off the bench and play three or four different positions, a la Warren Creavalle, even though they aren't the most talented at their position can come in and make a difference. In a league where you can only pay three guys on the team over $350,000 a year, you have to have these kinds of role players (which he is calling "glue players") to support your superstars and make the team competitive. It's definitely a less important concept in a league where you can just throw money at you're squad deficiencies and put superstars in every position.

Don't know why someone agreed with you, but the term seems american, for sure.

Avery Johnson is the definition of a glue guy. That Spurs (NBA) team to win the title in the late 99' finals would have never won with out him being the glue guy. Didn't put up huge numbers, but held the team together with timely plays and leadership.

A Scott Parker for instance, even though I don't ever want to see him in my team again.

only disappointed with Daws. I know its a friendly, but with his experience he should be bossing that box. Instead he looked clueless for the second game running. Its safe to say the Verts is our only reliable CB at the moment. Pretty scary. And thats not just based on the 2 pre-season friendlies - the warning signs were there last season.

It crazy to think that a couple years ago we were talking a Kaboul and Verts partnership to rival anyone.

Looking at both of Lamela's goals, did he play on the left or right ?

both goals were from the left

I liked him alot. Solid good passer, i dont want a Rose that risk to much, rather have a really good passer in the buildup. And have great crosses. A bit like azpilicueta
What you want and what Davies can produce well have to see. My reply was simply related to the idea that Davies played really well IMO he did ok but your entitled to yours.

He probably had most of his touches on the right but as ilikeost said, he was all over the place. Really encouraging to see him have that free role and make the most out of it.

I like Naughton a lot as a backup, don't get me wrong. I even would be fine with him starting the odd game. There's just no way he's a better option than Kyle Walker.

I agree, but Walker, along with Townsend need to start showing some tactical nouse, otherwise the club will cash in.

It looks like we are adapting well but it puts it into perspective abit when I see Man Utd just smashed LA Galaxy 7-0 in LVG's first pre-season game.

Great to see Lamela bag 2. Going to be great for his confidence. Just need Bobby to step up with a couple now.

Haven't seen it yet, only the vids posted here, but two Soldado passes, two Lamela goals, and (like him or not) Lennon involved both times is good viewing. I like how close they were when they needed to be, refreshing after two seasons of isolated forwards.

Regarding Naughts...he's a terrible left back but I think at right back he actually does a number of things better than Walker. I still think there's a lot of value in Walker's raw athleticism but I have to admit I kind of like the way Naughton uses the ball. Good passer and better in tight spaces.

Walker still the clear #1 because at that position you can make up for a lot of faults by being really fucking fast and really fucking fit.

I hope we eradicate the giving away of leads. It was common early in AVB's reign (albeit it was eradicated fairly quickly) and I hope it doesn't come back again.
Agree but in fairness we had a more makeshift feel in the second half, only Walker is a sure starter I think from that group. My concern with that is unless we see the young players alongside more first team players we will not really see how good they are.

Meanwhile Dawson looks gone, Fryers is not up to it, Carroll has had long enough to show he will not make it...
