It's great to see people are optimistic for Poch (as am I), but honestly, people are making it out as if he is going to transform every single player who has struggled with us into a world beater.
Says who?

Selling clubs always want maximum value. Is it really wise to leave it to the last minute to bring in a player if that delay costs the club a spot in the top four?

But the maximum they'll able to get from spurs will be less than a bigger side. And in a lot of cases the selling club are already resigned to losing the player. So it's just a case of brinkmanship. Waiting until the richer clubs drop interest or sign other targets.

We haven't got a bottomless pit of money. If we had paid the maximum rate for every player in recent seasons there would be no guarantee of them helping us achieve success. And in the long term it would probably inhibit the amount if funds we have to compete in future transfer windows.

I don't get what all the trauma is if the Musacchio deal can't be done.. it's not like they haven't got fall-back options. Lovren was 1st choice didn't happen, so Musacchio was the target & if that doesn't happen they will move onto the next target & if you look at it logically Pochettino signed Lovren for Soton.. he wantd him didn't happen, He wanted Musacchio at Soton last year might not happen, Astori he tried to sign last year.. already moved, so who else had Pochettino scouted or been linked to while at Soton.. Ismit Mirin Monaco- probably given his age Dier was signed instead.. so he's out, Virgil Van Dijk Celtic he was scouted heavily by Soton.. so he could be an option, Kostas Manolas Olympiacos was rumoured to be wanted by Soton last season so there's another option, Savic Fiorentina been linked with us before window opened but you never know he could of been a Sherwood or Baldini pick. so maybe, maybe not . There's probably many more on a target list & it's not like Pochettino is going to throw his toy's out of the pram if 1st choices are not attainable like Villas Boas & start saying there not his players like Sherwood. If Musacchio happens great, if it doesn't then onto the next target.

I just knew you'd be rooting around and come up with that old chestnut

You plank! Bloody hell, at least I tried to make mine vaguely ITK based! ;) Back to Neil Young for you. Four Strong Winds for example.

I think it's possible or even likely that we end up leaving the window with exactly what we have minus a few loans or cheap sales of younger players. It would be disappointing but hardly the end of the world.

I don't think there's enough time or money for us to come even close to matching the investment of the teams around us this window. When's the last time we spent significantly without selling big as well?

Part of me would almost relish this scenario because then the pressure is well and truly off. We could spend 100m and we'd still be overachieving massively to finish above 2 of Arsenal / LFC / United / Chelsea / City--but then we'd have the weight of expectations.

This is not like previous years where we had devastating holes all over the squad that weren't being filled. Could we use a few more players? Absolutely, but we do have solid depth and quality across most positions now IMO.

Could be a season of reaching the potential of what we already have and letting the manager really see who he wants going forward. Maybe that's wishful thinking for something more long-term...

I agree with you. But up to a point. The point I was making was that it's not only getting in the 'right' players - it's also the timing of bringing them in. For example, if the coach says he must have Muscacchio or a new starting centre back & the Club fails to deliver prior to the start of the season and that costs the team points in the early going then has not that delay hurt our final standing? It's not just bringing in a player on day one and playing him on day two. A player needs to develop an understanding with his team-mates.

Penny-wise, pound-foolish may be an apt saying in this case...

This is just the way Tottenham do their business. Whether you agree with it or not, this is how we have been able to compete with teams with more resources and deeper pockets. It's fustrating at times and in an ideal situation we would sign our number 1 targets early but we are obviously not in a situation to do this for whatever reason.

Some think that paying extra millions to bring in players earlier, would bring in more rewards at the end of the season but no-one can look into the future and know for sure.
Maybe our team is good enough already to beat West Ham, QPR and Liverpool?
Maybe we could have thrown in an extra few million and signed MM ready for the West Ham game but we lost the game anyway?

I'm hoping that with a good pre season and good players here already, we've got enough to win our first few games. If we can then improve our squad and move on our fringe players, I'm optimistist for a good season.
