Not necessarily. It could be a way of resolving the 3rd party issues. I think one might be required if Villareal buy-out the other two parties, so could be a prelude to a move.
That did occur to me, but I rejected the idea because they seem so keen on keeping him, which, admittedly, could be a double bluff, but very unlikely.

I can't see any news of him signing a new contract on their official website, or anywhere else for that matter.

Reckon Billy Ballbag took a chance. If he indeed does sign one, he'll look like he knows his shit.

Same here, I've searched for some news on that matter but the only thing that I found were some two weeks old snippets mentioning that Villareal wanted to hand him a new deal.

A new contract doesn't mean anything other than a player signed a new contract. AS, Marca or MD would have picked it up if true

Don't worry TMS I'll pay up if he doesn't sign by the end of this transfer window (y). You're also quite sceptical about Fazio as well aren't you? Anyway, can't see any new ITK and it's over 7 [Edit - 6!] days to go yet.

Not really opinionated on Fazio.
As far as I'm aware there's no third party interest nor is there any need to negotiate as he has a release clause.
The only thing that will delay that is us surely.

Would Fazio really be that much of a 'step down' compared to MM? That isn't a rhetorical question, I'm actually asking... :)

I think it was a case of age and sell - on value. Not ability.
Different players. Musacchio is a ball playing defender who is best on the ground (Vertonghen), whereas Fazio is a big man type known for his strength, aerial threat and positioning (Mertesacker).

best case would be to get both MM and Faz and get shot of kaboul, won't happen tho as jabs not worth a great deal in transfer out.
