I've already stated, I didn't see the game, it was a genuine question not an attempt to belittle Kane's performance. What is with the Mrs crap?
I believe it refers to a joke about a newspaper reporter interviewing Abraham Lincolns wife after he was assassinated at the theater while watching a play.

Happy we won and was happy for mason to get his chance (cracking goal too) his got a bit of Lallana about him too. Soldados goal was class in terms of a strikers instinct. I really believe if and its a big IF, we get to play around Soldado i am so certain he will come with the goods.

Todays game was evident (its always evident, dont get why poch dont see it lol) that we are seriously lacking in creativity and guile. Especially in midfield where we always always always go sideways and backwards and then sideways.

One thing i really hope to see but i really doubt it (sadly) .....

Is for pochettino to have the balls and change the team this weekend. Its so obvious that the current team he chooses is wrong. And its quite worrying that his been sticking with a team in the premierleague that has been so lethargic.

Adebayor, Kaboul, Chiriches (or one of those two CBs) ideally should all be dropped. Maybe Chadli (would keep him on only because he has been a threat and has scored a few)
Keep thinking if only we signed Konoplyanka and stick him on the left (would of been unreal).

I would bring in Soldado/ade out (with Lamela playing right off him), Vertonghen or Fazio in place of both or one of Kaboul or Vlad.

Its only two or three places that needs shuffling but it makes such a difference on how we play our football.

Its time for pochettino to really look deep in our squad and really see who fits his philosophy and who simply aint effective enough.

Ps - this team of ours stresses the fuck out of me but i love them dearly ffs :)

It's funny, watching Ryan Mason tonight he reminded me a bit of Adam Lallana from last season, he even looks a bit like him!

...maybe I was watching a stream of a different game - in the game I saw:
- Townsend was getting done up and down the pitch by Fox, and repeatedly took wasteful shots
- Lennon worked hard all over the field and was our best player in the 1st half
- Stambouli played several loose balls and did not do enough tracking back on the run ending in their shot off the bar
- Naughton was actually effective for once, and may have done enough to warrant starting over Dier
- Soldado was invisible until Townsend's shot hit his foot
- Mason was total quality and lifted the whole team when he came on
- Bentaleb was decent, but too sloppy to displace Dembele

Bentaleb never hides, in fact the last thing anyone can accuse him of is being anonymous because he's always showing for the ball. He doesn't shirk his defensive duties either. He was dispossessed and made a couple of bad passes but still made near double stambouli's passes(a whooping 106 passes with a 91% accuracy) Considering his age he should earning rave reviews.

Where did you get those stats from? Always struggle to find stats for League Cup games.

Agree with most points, but i still don't see how Townsend and Bentaleb manage to get a game, they're awful. Townsend thinks he's Ronaldo or Bale but never has an end product, and Bentaleb can't pass forward for love nor money.

Thank you for those stats.....I thought I was fucking wrong for a few moments there....which never happens
Is there any stats for him dribbling on the edge of his own box and getting caught twice? Do the stats mention him giving it away 3 times in 30 secs in first half ? Surely the stats tell us how many times he made a successful fwd pass ? But don't worry he made lots of lovely runs into space ! Hahahaha your the clown.

Go back, watch the match and just watch Bentaleb..............then tell me what you learned.
Showing for the ball and not hiding isn't enough though. Our whole problem lies in not getting the ball forward quickly. Bentaleb is tidy on the ball , (save for a 5 minute spell where he gave the ball away in dangerous positions 3 times ) but is just as bad as dembele when it comes to slowing down the momentum of a move. He doesn't look forwards and move the ball in the way we need to. We'll never break down defences by shifting it slowly from one side to the other via the centre backs. Bentaleb doesn't do much wrong but at the moment he isn't proactive enough to warrent a spot in mf. Has to be capoue and stamboulli for me against arsenal. Maybe even drop chadli or eriksen to add a 3rd man in there. Dembele or dare I say it mason.

Just looking through some of the stats and a few stand out.

As already mention Mason made 5 key passes in his 25 minutes on the pitch which is quite impressive. Secondly was Townsend with 14 attempted crosses but only 1 classed as an accurate cross (not sure how you can decide whether a cross is accurate.) Our starting 11 had 15 shots and only 2 on target (Naughton and Soldado with the shots on target.)

What I would really like to look at is the pitch map of our passing to see if I confirms that for the first 60 odd minutes there was still too much sideways and backwards passing. Not to mention our 2 attacking mids were receiving the ball with their back to goal and playing it straight back to the person that passed them the ball.

Stats are misleading, you or I could sit in front of the back 4 and pass it sideways and backwards under no pressure and get great stats. We all need to watch the game and make our assessment from there. A few players are too safe and don't take enough chances we all know who they are ?

This game felt like a watershed moment for this team. There had been talk in the days leading up to this game of players being on their last chance, and having to play for their position in this team. On that basis I think Paulinho is finished as a player at this club. The boy hides, almost the entire time.

Whenever we looked to play the ball out through the middle, he never shows for the ball. He was actually marking a player! Rather than run into space, the very basics of attacking football as instilled by Arthur Rowe some near 100 years ago, he was never more than a couple of yards away from an opposition player. At one point, when he wasn't being marked, he was putting himself behind the ref! Bentaleb was trying to play the ball out, and Paulinho was putting the ref between himself and the ball. Can you believe that shit?

The same could be potentially said of Lennon as well, never where he was needed and never really showing for the ball. His saving grace for now is that his work rate when tracking back is excellent. Van Gaal should sign him as a wing back. And speaking of full backs, Davies has simply done nothing to show me that he's a better choice than Rose. Simply not quick, or confident enough on the ball for me.

Suffice to say, the crowd were understandably getting their back ups. A lot of frustration with Bentaleb's first instinct always to be sideways or backwards. But then that's really his job... the deep midfielder ticking things over. The problem is, that when none of your attacking players are dropping to make themselves available, and the other midfield option is also a deep midfielder... it's pretty difficult to go anywhere else. But having said that, he had a bad game in general, and for the first half we played some of the most dire, negative, and inept football that I have seen outside of a school playground. I didn't see any pressing either, and too much standing off the Forest players... who were all too happy to let us do all the running and wait for us to fuck it up like we did against Liverpool and West Brom. Psycho had clearly been watching us. All this led to Forest pinging the cross bar, and ultimately nicking a goal.

But... this is where the game flipped. With the atmosphere in the ground starting to get genuinely nasty, we saw a change that could ultimately be the aforementioned watershed moment. The second Paulinho went off, got rid of the second DM, and put 2 up front, the whole shape and attitude of the team changed. No disrespect to Stambouli... he played fine, albeit with a few wobbly moments in the first half... but 2 DM's isn't necessary. And Mason impressed me hugely. Not just because of his blockbuster debut finish which lifted the crowd through the roof; the sort of Roy of the Rovers stuff that can change seasons. But his speed of thought, his wanting of the ball, and the quickness with which he moved the ball on. Townsend came to life as well, a player I still don't rate as a particularly good footballer technically, but is always trying to make things happen.

The change of shape allowed Soldado to get into the game more as well. Which we really need to do, as his touch and vision is superb. Its such a waste to leave him up front alone with players like Paulinho, Lennon and Townsend behind him. He needs to start imo.

So for me, a few lessons learned last night. The current formation doesn't seem to be getting the best players playing to their potential, and some of the players who need dropping, booting up the arse or ejecting have been identified. Bizarrely the overall buzz leaving the ground was fairly positive afterwards... but that could just be because they were glad to not be stuck there until penalties.

Oh... big up to the Forest fans, who sang all night and were largely all donning the fetching green Cloughie pullover. Nice touch.

I hear this a lot about Bentaleb and while he does pass back/sideways a lot, there is literally nothing else on the majority of the time! He does have some good through balls in his locker though and I said the other day I'd like to see him play more forward.

This is why a Mason should be targeting Bentalebs/Dembele place. Bentaleb is not a defensive midfielder, but he cant make something happen. We need something to happen. If there is no option, then make an option. Thats what we have sorely missed since Modric left. Modric used to make options by carrying the ball, turning a player, but he made options happen. Dembele can do this, but needs to be better at releasing the ball.

I remember watching a fearless Bentaleb come on against Southampton and we were all impressed with how he was willing to try and make things happen despite such inexperience. Now over time I notice someone who has gone back into his shell and it makes me wonder whether this could be down to the fact that our fans (especially at home) are so unforgiving when someone misplaces a pass? Sometimes for this lot it's just easier to play that simple 5 yard ball. Just an idea.

The two 'contributions' Townsend have made in his spurs career:

A attempted cross that went in against Villa last season.

And tonight he shanked a shot horribly and it was turned in for a goal.

That sums him up for me.
