Two thoughts on that:The overwhelming opinion on here was that Soldado was a goal rush waiting to happen and that Kane was a limited trier.
Levy has a lot of BSoDL in the bank, if he didn't deliver a trophy for another 15 years they would be happy enough with 'The best training ground in the world' and the stadium.I think Levy knows full well that he's getting a certain reputation when it comes to the hiring and firing of managers, both with the media and a growing number of fans. If he carries on, there will almost certainly be a straw that breaks the camels back and I think he knows this too. That's why I think he'll stick with Poch right up until and possibly beyond the point where most people would pull the trigger. Barring an apocalypse or being caught backscuttling Levy's pet cat 'moneybags' Poch is safe for the duration.
I might be right, I might be wrong, just my humble onion. I'm sure the prospect will make some of our more elastically kneed friends go pale.
Time will tell
As we found out this week, AVB very much got the signings he wanted,...
Poch is safe next season, although it is possible he may get pissed off due to him not getting signings that he wants like AVB...
It's bloody hard being successful all the time with signings, as we all know Spurs got widely lampooned for bringing in so many Premier league "virgins" in the infamous Bale splurge, but just look at Liverpool - they went out of their way to avoid the same mistake (oops that went well!) and brought in a number of premier league savvy players in their hunt, most of which looked safe bets on the face of it, but as we now know many of them just didn't work out, players like Louvren looked dead cert to be a success and I think many of us were a bit jealous (Chambers to arse is another good example). But it hasn't worked out that way has it? To the contrary Eriksen has been an instant success (the Dutch league has produced some real gems - Suarez, Bony etc. and I think it's a safer bet than some leagues), whilst Chadli has come good and Lamela is rapidly improving. So the splurge is not looking quite so laughable as it was.
The motto of this pre-amble is that there appears no correct formula to targeting players, a guy from a foreign league who has never set foot in the UK is just as likely to shine or flop as a Premier savvy player by the looks of it. Perhaps the best strategy is to buy a few of each? Either that or target them based solely on their style of play and whether it can be successfully adapted for our league. For example Soldado as lone striker in the Prem? Perhaps with hindsight not a good idea. Another thing, if a player is cheap it's for a reason Mr Levy, so please resist the temptation. Finally when a player is targeted and we are unsuccessful for whatever reason, don't knee-jerk and switch to a cheaper alternative in the same league, like Fazio, walk away and begin another detailed search.
The league position and our 'form' over the season says more about the state of the premier league than how well we've done or not done.
Chelsea overall champions, I don't think anyway can say they didn't deserve it, by far and away the best performers overall this year. However, look at how well premier league teams have faired in Europe is a clear indicator that things aren't that great in the UK at the moment, in terms of quality.
5th position isn't a bad place to end up, considering a new manager and young team, but looking into overall form, it doesn't strike you as a good position, which is weird. I said I'd be happy with 6th and a decent cup run, we done better than that, but I'm not sure whether thats down to the other teams being worse, or overall standard dropping.
We've been here before, just a couple of poor results from CL qualification, thats frustrating, but overall, providing we can get rid of the shit, and get in some hungry young players, we should be able to build.
Personally, I'd like to see us getting a hell of a lot tighter at the back... that has to be priority before anything else.
Only 4 teams in the whole league have let in more goals than us - Leicester, Newcastle, Villa & QPR. Two fo the relegated teams let in less goals than us.
Luckily, we've been able to find the net a lot more, scoring the 5th highest.
The sheer volume of goals shipped is where I've struggled to understand just how we've finished 5th.. but we have somewhere, and that has to be a positive, you simply don't finish 5th by accident, or by chance, but by taking your chances... just a shame we didn't take all of our chances eh!
Plenty to be positive about, plenty of cracks to be filled as well, but overall, pretty decent season.
I agree I was sceptical re. Soldado as well, he seemed too lightweight and small to lead the line as a single striker in the prem. Was amazed when we played him up front alone quite frankly.I mostly agree with what you what you write except for one thing: I swear to God I knew Soldado would be a shitty pick up. Why? Well, first off he's too elfin to lead the line, second of all he's a poacher, and third off he's neither strong nor fast. The second they got him I said to myself "great, we just splashed the cash on a poor man's Jermaine Defoe."
Every other acquisition I would've agreed to but I was fucking positive Soldado would be a dud. He would've been perfect for them c__ts up the road but for us it was never going to work out. Granted, even skeptical me never thought he'd be this putrid. But no, I'm not surprised by his failure. I hated this acquisition.
I kinda disagree, for a fair few years we dominated the CL quite well in fact, not sure whats changed other than overall quality.I don't think English clubs not being successful in Europe is that much about quality. More about tiredness. We have a more physical league, that is more competitive, with the CC we play more games and don't have a winter break. I think this effects us.
Klopp wants to move to the EPL!
Serious question- not trolling, not wishing to wind anyone up-- I literally just don't get it. I keep reading on here, over and over and over again, that:
-We must stick with Poch because we always fire our managers too quickly; as such, we must stay with our current coach lest we be the laughing stock of the league.
-We must stick with Poch because he hasn't yet had nearly enough time to correct things; in fact, he ought to get at least two full seasons- minimum- before we even think of reevaluating his position.
-We must stick with Poch because we need to play in a discernible, systemic fashion- as opposed to the "Helter Skelter" approach of previous administrations- and he is the man to implement this.
-We must stick with Poch because a youth movement is the way forward, and he is the man who will develop and integrate our young players in the future.
-We must stick with Poch because Tottenham are about playing football with flair and excitement; he will make this happen.
-We must stick with Poch because other clubs (Ars*nal and Man U, to name a few) have stuck by their managers and enjoyed long-term success because of this.
-We must stick with Poch because we need someone who can pick the right players for us, someone who can spot talent on the open market and get said player into our squad.
-We must stick with Poch because in addition to acquiring talented players, Poch will also pick the right players. Talent only goes so far- what is needed is talent that fits. Poch knows what he wants and needs. He will get the correct men for his system and he will fuse them into the team in keeping with his overall footballing philosophy.
I could go on and on but I think I'll stop there. So here are my questions:
1) Why do you feel he will do any (or all) of the above? What is it about him- either in his past or in the present- that gives you this inclination?
2) What about him do you like? What good things has he done thus far at Tottenham?
3) What aspects of his coaching do you currently dislike? Has he done anything to make you begin to question your faith in him?
4) At what point do you say "we hired the wrong guy again- and he needs to go. He is not the answer for us and the longer he is here the worse off we will be."
5) Lastly- could anyone- given time- coach Spurs? I mean this. This whole "give him time"-mantra is based mostly upon the fact that he is a professional who- if given time- will right the wrongs at Spurs. Would the same go for Tim Sherwood? Or Juande Ramos? If not, why not? What is the difference between him and them?
Stability at 12th spot?
If he has not got it right in 5 games not 5 years he has to go.
Why should we put up with shit? Would Chelsea? Would Real Madrid?-No.
Cliff, at home to play a lone striker is criminal. I despaired at that lineup he put out against Stoke, a side that had not won an away game since August.
An incisive, adventurous manager just does not do that. No way.
The guy is the Ed Miliband of football, nice guy, means well, but hopelessly fucking well out of his depth
I stayed away from footie threads yesterday as was so angry i might have got a ban, but now dust settled i cant find a single positive in the idea Poch is the man to get us into the CL
Not fit to run my bath let alone my team
Go all out for Klopp, offer him whatever he needs wages wise
Am sure the prospect of working with young players, and finding youth, would tempt him
Yes but klopp is a huge step up, no compensation, he wants the prem, there are no other Prem jobs going. May actually be one chance for a top manager
I'd have Poch over Klopp any day but I think klopp is getting there with Liverlol. They need a defence and that is really his biggest challnege. All the calls for Klopp although kinda understandable at the time are hilarious looking back. Klopp so far has proved to be not as good as Brendan Rogers.
1.888 vs 1.887... In your face, Arsenal
