If ever there was a time to break the habit of breaking even, it'd be now. We have a tighter squad with very few passengers left. We also have a number of very talented young players on the brink of breaking through in the coming season or so.
Spending now on the likes of Berahino and Witsel (if that is to happen), would leave our squad fairly well set for coming seasons prior to the stadium move. No real need for major surgery over coming windows, so no need to spend significantly again. Most teams are having a mini spend in lieu of the increased TV revenue. I understand we have to run as an efficient business model, but if we risk our rivals pulling clear of us, it's a hard road back to close that gap again. I'm not advocating a major reckless splurge, but more a calculated spend on two remaining pieces of our squad puzzle that would leave us looking very healthy. Also taking into account the slashed wage bill, that will surely help financially.
Within the next season or so, we'll have the likes of Walker-Peters, Velkjovic, Carter-Vickers, Winks, Onomah, Oduwa etc to carefully be phased in, meaning less need for reinforcements next few windows. Plus others like Edwards who are a bit younger.
I think if it is at all possible to add Berahino and Witsel this window, that would truly put us in a sting position for a good few years, given Witsel and Alderweireld, both 26, would be the oldest players added. Trippier 24, Son 23, Berahino, Njie and Wimmer 22. All with plenty of years ahead of them.

I'd argue that you could take any two teams that finished 5th to 10th last year and out of them make a team that could challange for the Top 3. Just because Southampton are close to us doesn't mean that they don't have some players in the squad that would improve us considerably... the same goes for them regarding us.

Regardless, we're clearly after Witsel now and I'm pretty sure if we pull that signing off, not too many could argue that Levy is frightened of splashing the cash if and when it's needed. We've spent a lot this window so far and we're going to spend more by the looks of it. The "Levy is a penny pincher" line isn't going to stack up anymore if we manage to get Berahino and Witsel to go along with N'Jie and the Korean bloke (can't remember his name). - I mean that's a nearly a whole new midfield and forward line

scbc see us as a rival and rightly so imo. another factor in them not selling to us, if youre with me?

fucking big if but were we to sign the two you mention then id say worth the wait and also say the chairman has done a great job improving the squad en route to the new stadium. a real feat, that. but we aint done it yet.

The Goat hears that its far more likely any signings will be announced tomorrow rather than today.

Note from A&C: Posted so you can get out, get some fresh air and get your supplies in for tomorrow.

I'm thinking by tonight we should have a pretty good indication if the deals for Berahino and Witsel will happen. If we haven't agreed any fees by tonight then I assume we will move on to back ups tomorrow.

So basically, nothing is happening today and we should just come back tomorrow?

If only it were that simple. I'm almost convinced Charlie Austin would be a good signing. The Stockholm Syndrome is in full effect.

For how many years on the trot have we heard "nows the time to spend and try to kick on etc"??? And it never ever happens this time will be the same, for me a striker is most important and if we don't get one its fucked us for the season!

I wouldn't necessarily assume that, certainly not with Berahino...which could go right to the wire.

If Austin's down the pecking order I wonder who the more preferential Berahino targets are? Hernandez is off to Leverkusen.

Midfield is concerning too. No Wanyama and conflicting Witsel reports. Hope we have a plan C.

I don't think that's accurate. Loads of deals have happened on deadline day, with bids only being accepted on the day.

excellent post as always mr get spurred on. with such high hopes for alli and pritch too such investment could help us make hugo think twice about leaving next summer. then they can grow together. likely a bumpy road, but to certain improvement.

Not what was said though was it? No announcement expected today doesn't mean we're not going to agree anything today. Today is the ideal time to agree a fee to allow players time tomorrow to complete the deal. If anything is done tomorrow it has to be agreed early in the day to allow enough time to complete. The 6pm cut off should give us the kick up the arse tomorrow.

Just to note. Seems like Spurs Odyssey is suffering severely from transfer window load. We may not be getting any ITK from their side for the rest of the day :(

@Archibald&Crooks - has @Mystery had his source/info verified by the mods? Seem to remember that in previous windows he'd dropped some info but declined to send you and the Staff a PM confirming how he gets his info? Not knocking what has been posted so far, but would like to find out whether this is 'SC verified' so that I can judge how much salt to apply. Cheers.

And further to post 370, in response to whoever it was asking if i'd join the BSoDL, if we DO sign Berahino and Witsel then yeah, the blood tests will be in the post, i'll go bald, somehow reduce my height by about 4ft and learn how to imitate Levy's voice, which I imagine to be somewhere between Joe Pasquale and Julian Clary.

Watch the the 'tektrunk' videos for hints and tips on levys voice!

Very true... it's all fingers crossed at the moment. But either way there is some indication that he's behind Poch in a big way and is going to support him. Time will tell. We could still all be pulling our hair out this time tomorrow.
