In and around the box I agree Batshuayi could be compared to Kane. Strong, direct, good positional and timing sense. But that's where the comparison ends. Batshuayi does not drop deep, drift wide and work channels like Kane, his hold up play isn't that great, he doesn't create as many chances for others, his work without the ball vastly inferior, pressing not as good.

Whether that could be worked on and improved is open to debate, but they really aren't the same player.

I think (O) Dembele's finishing has the potential to be as good as Batshuayi's (Dembele actually has more goals per 90 than both Kane and Batshuayi this season) and he will be really effective played as any of the AM positions, but I think played as a CF, Dembele will also do that other stuff that Kane does. He'll drop and drift, get on the ball in various areas, his work off the ball (tackles/interceptions) is already on par, creates more chances per 90 for others than Kane (albeit in an easier league and playing as an AM).

Dembele is a far better option IMO whether you want him to back up Kane or (and) play in other AM/wide forward positions.

#THFC following Michy Batshuayi closely notably thanks to ex-Marseille coach Bielsa who's been sending Pochettino reports & DVDs (L'Equipe)

This would be Bielsa who continually picked Gignac ahead of Batshuayi? And for good reason. I've never been Gignac's biggest fan, but he suits the lone striker role much better than Batshuayi. He's much more like Kane.

surely there is a "Dembele: Welcome to Liverpool" youtube video showcasing his skills?

Matt Spiro on twitter was the one that tweeted about Batshuayi.

He also said we were looking at Lassana Diarra from Marseille as he will be on a free this summer. He's been immense for them this season and would be able to do a role similar to what Kante has done for Leicester. I've always rated him and think he would be a good addition, certainly on a free.

Whilst i understand the sentiment, do you honestly think we have enough quality in depth to compete in:

A) The PL which will likely be much more competitive next season than this one.
B) The Champions League - much harder teams than the EL.
C) Get a bit further in the domestic cups (we had a weak season in these).

Personally i think we barely have enough to manage one of those tasks next season as it is, let alone all 3.

We have a lot of fringe players, there is this depth you require.

Depth and fringe are not synonyms to me. Pochettino seems to be very reluctant to use fringe players. Hence the value fringe players may represent as in providing depth is almost void. We need depth in the sense more players Pochettino would love to use often (but not necessarily a bigger total squad).
To put it into a slogan, fewer fringe, more depth.

Ok but every team has fringe players.

I'm talking about quality in depth and frankly i don't think we have enough of it to seriously challenge on 3 fronts next season:

PL - will be much tougher than this season IMO.
CL - much tougher than EL
Domestic cups - we had a poor season in the domestic cups.

For me games like Dortmund showed how much we lack depth to continually compete throughout the season on multiple fronts.

I don't think we are far off, but we're not there yet IMO. 3 signings would get us very close.

Next season Pritchard & Njie will be like 2 new signings already and if Son can get back to the player he was in the first few games, then he will make a massive difference to our AM3 and will be almost like 3 new signings (with Pritch and Njie).

Then for the CM 2, we have Bentaleb, who could come back from his injuries and be the player that was our best CM last season and Mason, who has been playing with a knee injury most of the season, goes for surgery to fix it in the summer. All these players plus signing another striker, will make a huge difference next season, though I wouldn't be against upgrading on Carroll (though we may already have the potential upgrade in Winks) and Chadli if someone like O.Dembele or Boufal was available.

Whilst i agree in parts with the above, what you've missed is that some of the total squad qill get injured this season. This is just how football is and as such saying that Pritchard & Njie will be like 2 new signings is true, but say for example Dier and Lamela got injured then it would be like losing two key players for us.

I just think, having watched us this season, that assuming we have the quality in squad depth to compete for winning the PL, CL and cups next season is niave.

Well the good reason might be that Gignac was Ligue 1's 2nd highest goal scorer the season before Batshuayisigned and Batshuayi was 18 and untested at any top level.

So if i was the manager i would have done the same as Bielsa - kept with my number 1 striker who had a load of experience and is one the leagues top scorers and play my new, young signing in the odd starting appearance and 20 or so sub games across the season - bringing him slowly into the team.

just like the Lyon president said he'd do no more negotiations with Levy after the Lloris transfer...

Bingo.

There are so many of these stories floating around, and it doesn't help that they are constantly repeated by witless fans without an interest in making up their own mind. The only one of such stories I would be inclined to believe is about Levy and Abramovich, but even that wouldn't necessarily stop the clubs from trading.

I've never even believed the Chelsea/Spurs one

I think it's likely they'd never sell to us but only because we will never be offering the most money for an asset they are selling. If we did I am sure they would sell to us just like they sold several key players to arsenal

Levy would be more likely to refuse to sell to them as he did with modric because he would rightfully prefer to sell our players to clubs we are not competiting against if we are forced to sell
