My dad has insisted for years now that Terry Neill did the dirty on us by selling Jennings among others to Arsenal then going himself.

Is there any truth in that or is he mistaken?

Im pretty sure Jennings has said himself that the board/chairman didnt exactly treat him well and it was made clear he wasnt wanted

To employ an Arsenal hero/talisman as a Spurs manager for whatever reason is ridiculously stupid.

To do this twice is a disgrace.

Neil just disembowelled my beloved team. He wasn't even a good manager for anyone else either.

It was actually Keith Burkinshaw who sold Jennings to the Goons. Barry Daines was the reserve keeper and was making noises about wanting away. Keith thought Jennings at 32 was probably coming to the end of his career and made the call to let him go and keep Daines. Daines was ok but not great. And we ended up getting Ray Clemence in to fill the spot a few years later at the age of 33 - one year older than Pat's age when we sold him.

I can't swear but I don't think the facts back this one up!

Big Pat was transferred to Arsenal in the Summer of 1977 (after 13 years playing for Spurs). Terry Neill had already left us as manager in 1976 and Keith Burkinshaw had replaced him. It's possible Terry Neil 'sowed some seeds' during his time with us and after but it wasn't his decision to sell the great man. I think we thought (wrongly) he was too old.

I always suspected my dad had got it wrong.
I couldn't imagine spurs allowing an ex gooner to sell anyone to them.

The spurs board and Mr Burkinshaw felt he was to old, which was the norm in them days keepers very rarely played until their later years like they do now. Big Pat has always said he was so sad to leave whilst he went on to win honours with Arsenal he was and always will be a spur through and through. If he was around today he would have been playing with us until he was 40+

What an absolute gentleman Pat is.....the way the Chairman/Board treated him is nothing but scandalous!

To think he went on for another 9 years and played in the 86 World Cup Finals..

We gave him up for this.....last goal!!

To be fair Neill came from Hull City and he was to replace Sir Bill and jumped at the chance he did save us from relegation in his first season, I doubt very much that he did any damage to our side.

Ray Clemence's first game for us was at Ayresome PK ... I was there in 1981, he replaced Milia Alecsic who was between the sticks in the 1981 final and replay against Man City, we had Howard Kendall also around the time of Barry Daines too.

It's all before my time pretty much but I once heard Neill claim in an interview that whilst manager of Spurs he agreed a deal to sign cryuff without the boards knowledge, once the board found out they cancelled the deal and gave him a bollocking for going behind theirs backs.

No idea how true it is but that's what he claimed

Pat had suffered injuries in the season we got relegated. With the new manager, Burkinshaw, came a new philosophy and he wanted a change of the guard. Sad but he was proved right in achieving promotion and more success later. Although of course PJ won trophies too.

I think you mean Mark Kendall rather than Howard... :0)

I think Pat himself told a story that he asked the club for a loan to buy a house and was refused. He got it after the transfer from Arsenal.

I never took to Clemence.

I was 12 when we won the 1981 FA Cup Final and it was pretty much my first memory of Spurs winning something. I couldn't understand why the manager could even consider replacing one of the team who'd won the Cup, let alone the man they called 'Elastic'. I thought Milija was great. I remember him reaching for shots like Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four in goal (although this may not have actually happened and it may just be that he was a tad more athletic than Barry Daines ever was).

And they replaced him with this guy who was so old that Liverpool didn't want him any more. My Dad told me he was really good and so we settled down to watch his debut (the Charity Shield in 1981) and he cocked up a corner to let Villa take the lead (2:15 on the video). "See", I said "he's rubbish" and I never changed my view. I know most see him as one of the great England and Tottenham goalkeepers, but I never forgave him taking Aleksic's place, nor that mistake.

Still, I'm over it now.

Mostly.

The Board were responsible for letting Pat go to the Gooners. He was 30 & they didn't think he would play for many more season & wouldn't offer him a new contract, so them down the road stepped in & got another 9 years or so out of him.

It was a poor Board anyway, because they ignored Billy Nick's recommendations & appointed Neil, who couldn't wait to leave us for the Arse when the chance came & he did take Willie Young with him, although Burkinshaw refused to go & became a decent manager for us, although he was eventually let down by the Board as well.
