What I don't get is how we had ITK yesterday alluding to us being prepared to sign both Isco and Zaha on perm deals... which would have set us back the best part of £50-60m. Yet with both deals apparently dead in the water, we're not prepared to spend a proportion of that on an albeit inflated asking price for Sissoko, something doesn't add up. You can't say we're going to spend £60m on two and then go and contradict ourselves by not paying £25-30m on a separate individual. Smells of our usual deadline day false dawns.

Yep we've seen it so many times before.

The problem with Chadli is his form fell off a cliff. The problem with saying we've replaced him with an unknown is as you say - we've no idea how good he is/will be, how long he will take to adjust etc.

The other side of it is that Chadli could've just been suffering a temporary loss of form and this season could've come back as the guy who scored hatfuls the season before last and was one of the first names on the team-sheet.

It's this idea of shipping out players who aren't utterly perfect and constantly on mega-form I don't like. Poch seems to have absolutely zero capacity for standards dropping (unless it's Kane), which simply isn't practical in sport.

In regards to Chadli, Monday Pleaty said Chadli was finished at Spurs

. He said he had bad habits which could not be eradicated at his age in regards to his play and movement.

So if we're where we were last season, why is everyone so catatonic with rage, depression and a general sense of impending doom?

Last season was okay no?

Yes yes others have strengthened but for Jebus' sake people need to get a grip. It's genuinely sad how some people react.

Last season was okay up until the last 5 games, where we were burnt out, and had suspensions.
And that was with us playing weaker line-ups in the cup competitions.
You'd think we actually want to win something this time around, or maybe get past the group stage of the CL.

Depends how hard they tried. Half hearted efforts to keep fans happy don't count.

ITK suggesting we have been trying hard for him all week and Levy himself flew over to Spain to try and convince the guy - I'd say that's trying pretty hard.

Didn't stop him scoring loads a year ago though...

Others have strengthened quite a bit. Top 4 revert will back to form. No way are we fonishing above arsenal as we never do. And United, Chelsea and City are all better than us.

"Can't believe we're starting the season without a defensive midfielder. Yeah Dier's played there in pre-season, but he's hardly gonna do it all year is he? Our back-up centre-half as a defensive midfielder in a team that's supposed to challenge for the Top 4, we're a laughing stock. We'll finish below Palace and Stoke - just look at who they've signed".

I think that summarises the mood last year.

It also goes to show that most of you, including me, know absolutely fuck all.

Schneiderlin sounds a fanciful rumour. I'd take him at this point as I fear we are short on numbers with Bentaleb and Mason departing. We are struggling with adequate bench options. Poch is a great coach and develops youth but even he must see the need for experience here. With Champions League and with the top end of the league at its strongest we can't fall back immediately on youth as our first change.

Is it a coincidence that in a window of few leaks that our apparent interest in Isco was squirting out all over the media.

Not razor blade time quite yet. These things are often off and on during deadline day, just have to wait and see what happens. We may not get anyone else in but I'm sure we are haven't given up just yet.

I'm sure we'll still be trying at 10:59pm, clearly shows we've got a startegy

tbh we've done a piss poor job at strengthening a team that nearly won the league last year. And when you analyse strengthening you must look at the teams around you - would be silly not to judge what we have done/or haven't against out rivals.

I'm assuming you know this for fact.

It's a fact that is what ITK reported - sorry if that doesnt fit in with your negativity right now. (also please do not shoot the messenger who is just trying to stay positive)

In reality the backup for Kane never became that much of an issue because he played every game. The real issue in the first team was the lack of a magic lock picker, with pace and trickery who can beat layers in tight spaces. And a glaring lack of pace up front. Poch has said a few times now he wanted to bring in more than 1 signing this window in that area - but it seems we'll be relying on NKD to be all of those things right from the start.

Kane played every game, and he was often brilliant - but there were times when he was clearly cream crackered, and someone coming off the bench would have provided a new, better threat. That's before you even consider the possibility of using him alongside another striker, as Poch has been willing to do this season. We were lucky that Kane didn't get injured last season, but it didn't mean that having no one else wasn't an issue.

I do agree that we lack a bit of directness and width, and signing someone like Zaha (but ideally not fucking Zaha) would be a good thing in that respect...but the idea that we haven't significantly strengthened already is just obviously bollocks as far as I'm concerned. As with every transfer window, it's the hope - and the hype - that affects how people see the window; we whinge about the club leaving signings too late every window and not giving them the chance to bed in, but then when we get the big signings in early like we did with Wanyama and Janssen, we forget about them by the time deadline day comes around and get the hump because we're not buying more players.
