Kristoff Terreur on twatter:

Toby Alderweireld will undergo a scan today. Possibly one of the nerves in his knee took a heavy knock. No full diagnosis yet though.

Probably not related, seeing as the guy will be getting top notch treatment, but some [edit] fornicator once insisted on playing football with metal studs on an artificial pitch and landed on top of my big toe. It led to nerve damage, and for a month it felt like my wrist was being blown clean off with a shotgun every time i tried kicking a ball.

The doctor told me that playing football wouldn't be dangerous, I just had decide whether it the fun outweighed the feeling of the foot being shot off thing.

Still guessing, but one could probably ease the pain through local anestesia if it's "just" nerve damage.

Some injections should get him through the games then. Guess it depends how freely the club administer that kind of pain relief though.

Man I wish I was a professional footballer, do a bit of training (keeping nice and trim to impress the laydees) and then go home to play video games... :(

(Also get well soon Toby ).

That's what the Times are saying too. Better news than the Guardian article.

Although I await the SC Nerve Damage Specialists to comment before I get too excited! ;)
He could have had direct trauma to his Saphenous nerve considering the impact was to the anterior (front) aspect of the knee and potentially medially (closer to midline)

After the initial pain on impact and resultant inflammation/swelling it would probably present like patellofemoral pain syndrome

Could take a while to actually heal itself, especially in his line of work with the continuous impacts and explosive movements during matches and training but it would probably/hopefully reduce enough for him to comfortably return to action sooner rather than later (even if he requires some pain management to comfortably play and train in the mean time)

We have a run of fixtures before the NLD where it would be reasonable to rest him if necessary anyway so hopefully this won't be too negative an issue for the player or us

I rememeber him holding his back of the knee just below thighs

I was a plasterer before doing my physiotherapy degree :)

I'd need to watch it again but I thought the commentator suggested he was hit by Vertonghen as Jan landed

My initial thought was that tobi was Jan and had been injured as he landed

The replay I saw was very difficult to identify a cause as tobi seemed to be stationary before he went down and at most there seemed to be a coming to together between him and Jan (with Jan being in front of tobi)

There are of course branches of the sciatic nerve that run behind the knee so it doesn't rule out nerve damage if the pain was from behind but the cause of the symptoms from what I saw in the video would become more of a mystery

If the impact was on the outside of his knee it's possibly that the common peroneal nerve was damage and that innovates muscles in the area you describe him holding so it could still be a nerve issue to be fair

Edit: plus if you had pain on the outside of your knee you may naturally wrap your hands around the back too as you grab the painful area
