Wimmer is capable of filling in for Vertonghen. He has already shown that.

He is the perfect deputy for him.

Strange, I was weighing up the options CCV? Davies? Panic January buy?

I then realised I'd totally forgotten about Wimmer, surely this is the exact scenario that prompted us to give him a contract extension, step forward big Kev

I think Davies might be a better option than wimmer

Based on a 25 minute sub appearance in a game we're easily winning? And ahead of someone who played in a victory at City last year and has always come in and done well?

Or, just spitballing here, based on Davies playing in a back 3 for Wales, and might have more training in the position.

But, admittedly, I don't know how Austria sets up. I think we will see Wimmer, if Jan is not fit, but Davies is not a bad shout.

You can't rule it out. I would guesstimate that they have to fight it out in training. If we do continue with the present formation, it is not a forgone conclusion that Wimmer is ahead of Davies. Their status in the squad is more or less the same, they are both capable to cover, and it's down to who wants it the most. Wimmer is certainly not the obvious choice simply because his "position" is CB and Davies' "position" is LB.

Wimmer is a CB who can, at a push, play LB. Davies is a LB who can, at a push, play CB. Big difference. There's no doubt Wimmer will start if we play 3 at the back.

Expand on that out of interest

Apart from the fact he's used to playing in a back 3 that's all i can suggest - no doubt Wimmer is a better defender all ends up - but it's how poch thinks the player will fit best in to the back 3 system?

When we play a back 3. No more if

I don't think that's certain at all. Part of the advantage it's given us is that's it's caught teams off guard. I think Poch's aim is to gain a tactical advantage and make the opposition uncertain what formation we'll play.

We've been invinciable in this formation. We aren't going back
