Haven't read the piece but regardless of what it says he should be joint top earner with Hugo and kane, however if he wants that then no buyout clause unless it's something crazy like 80 mil.

Sadly though City or Utd would pay that.

Exactly.

To a certain degree they can afford to pay whatever for any player that they want. Therefore, lets make sure if they did come knocking and he wanted to go, we are covered.

Imagine if we had put an 80m buyout clause in Walkers contract. We would have 30m+ extra coming our way

I think that's the certain degree you mentioned..... No one would pay that for Walker.

But if that was in his buyout clause surely they would have too, no?

(That was not meant to be patronising in anyway, just an honest question in response to the point you raised (y))

20k a week is too much really but in this silly world of football were even lesser clubs would pay him alot more we have to pay all our top players at least 80 to 100k now or risk being picked apart every summer

No, that is not how that clause would work.

We couldn't refuse a bid of whatever amount is in the clause- meaning a player would automatically have the right o discuss a move when an offer of the value was received. We could still accept a lower value though- so if say Madrid bid 75 Mil for walker we could accept it even if his buy out is 80 Mil

"Tottenham set for contract talks"

Its just a space filler, the same headline could have been posted any time in the last 12 months. It doesn't mane anything is about to happen.

We could not find a replacement to fill the void. One of the greatest players I have ever seen. The man is a machine.

I just read Andre Gray wants a new £100k a week contract at Burnley, Zaha got a five year £110k a week contract, WBA to offer Johnny Evans £100k a week.... if these smaller teams continue to offer out contracts of these values to inferior players our guys are soon going to raise the bar on what they expect and demand.

It's what will ultimately kill football as we know it it's simply unsustainable of most teams in the league. All the extra money won't solve the problem in the long run.

It means that Daniel Levy has sharpened his pencil. Please note that all Levy contracts are written in pencil.

I know Levy doesn't like buyout clauses but wonder if there's a half way house we can do with regards to it, like £40m buyout that only becomes active 2 years into the new contract.

I can't see many (if any) clubs willing to shell out £40m on a 30 year old

No offense taken. I just can't imagine Walker ever being worth that value. That is a buy-out clause that isn't realistic.

Yes, we could sit behind such a figure and tell someone to do one until they come back with the cash but IMO they just won't bother coming back. So then the questions becomes is the buy-out clause a starting position in negotiations or our final position

Buyout clauses represent very different things for different clubs, players and agents.

Some clubs will protect themselves from an established player being poached by putting in an unrealistic clause, and then just saying they have no interest in selling until the clause fee is matched.

Huge clubs like Barca and Real just put hugely unrealistic buy out fees on most players (even youngsters) basically meaning they only sell when they want to.

Some will tempt a player to sign for a lesser club by inserting a realistic buyout clause so they can showcase their talent and know that if they do well they can get a move to a better club. With the club hoping they will fall in love with the club and stay or sign a new contract removing or replacing the buyout with a better price.

I don't believe Levy does buyout clauses at all but if we are entertaining the idea for TA, you would think we would be in the former category only offering clauses for unrealistic fees, but then that would be up to the agent to negotiate a lower buyout.
