Or maybe the media just want to fill some extra pages and talk some extra crap about why this hasn't got done yet. No talk of an agreed fee with Everton so how would we even know what wages he wants?

It does happen where personal terms are agreed before the fee is sorted, as long as there is permission from the selling club for the player to speak to the other club.

But let's be honest, the press won't know what the hell is going on, they're just filling column inches.

i am pretty sure we know what wages he wants, we arent going to agree a fee with everton then find out he wants too much money
it doesnt work like that

Why would we sign him now when he's injured? Assuming £80k/week, it would cost us £320k in wages before he can even kick a ball, so makes full sense to wait as long as possible and get Everton to panic a little about the price and running down his contract.

So we can get him into a flat, settle him down in his new environment, let our fitness team get their hands on him, get him off the scouse and on a decent diet now rather than in four weeks.

My best guess would be it is all agreed with Barkley and his agent and as Trix and others have said it is being held up by Everton playing silly devils.

This Barkley saga (as well as this whole transfer window) is going to end in tears isn't it...

I think it's more likely that it will just go through on the last day and everyone will be tearing their hair out over will he won't he etc in the previous days/weeks.

But the Barkley saga of will he won't he doesn't preclude us from carrying out other deals, there are still other positions to strengthen.

At the end of this window we may never really know the truth about how much he is/was asking for. It may be the case that he wasn't asking for £140, £120 or even £100k per week but the probable truth is that we are/were offering a him a level of wages within our current wage structure that he was not prepared to accept.

Much has been stated about our wage structure and Levy has been on record as stating that transfer fees paid by other clubs are simply unsustainable, what he did not address is whether or not other clubs or even our own wage structures are unsustainable, if our wage structures are so out of kilter with everyone else's. Yes he can lock existing players into 5 year deals but what he can't do is lock players in who are not contracted to us, who are yet to sign for us. As great as our academy facilities are and as inspirational as Poch and our coaching staff are there is a limit to what we can do with this current wage structure, which is highlighted by the fact that we have signed no one. I don't buy into this theory that we have not bought anyone because we are entirely satisfied with what we have, or that we haven't identified a player who could be recruited and would be an upgrade on what we already have, or at least be a more than able squad member who can hit the ground running.

If we stick entirely to this structure we will have to accept that we may probably never recruit anyone we really want or need during the first 6 to 8 weeks of the future summer transfer markets going forward unless there are fundamental changes to the way transfer business and wage negotiations are now conducted from this window onwards.

What Levy has to decide is this, is such a model he has in place sustainable, if there is a risk that we may never get the players in good time for a decent pre season or at all. Is the risk of losing ground and points in the first 6-8 weeks of every season sustainable if we are to mount a real challenge on the league if we repeatedly get 2nd or 3rd with an 8 to 10 point gap ? Will losing out on 4th place by 3 to 4 points be sustainable if we continue to lose a disproportionate number of points in the first 6-8 weeks of the season be sustainable? Is going without a trophies sustainable because we are 1-3 decent players or squad players because of our inability to recruit key players in first team or vital squad positions ? If these things affect us this season and going forward will he be so willing to speak out and take responsibility for this ?

As has been said previously though - the £p/w Spurs are reported to pay is never the end of the deal with Levy contracts - players can and do earn far more than their basic wage through a generous and complex series of bonuses and incentives, both personal and club-wide.

Barkley won't get anything close to £100k p/w basic, but he will be offered a set of bonus payments which will allow him to almost certainly earn more than that if he does well.

All this talk of our wage structure restricting the players we can buy is simply not accurate. If a player is willing to work hard and achieve things at Spurs he will be very well rewarded financially.

I agree on both fronts, which is why it seems odd that suddenly after what has probably been 4-6 months maybe longer of interest we are suddenly saying his wage demands are too high. For me it's just media bollocks as usual and we are probably still either:
1.) Negotiating on fee and payment structure.
2.) Waiting for Everton to get more desperate knowing that Barkley is injured and wouldn't be featuring or training for us at the moment anyway.

Time will tell but barring anything going majorly wrong I see Barkley joining us towards the end of August.

Surely these reports today is just us trying to get the fee down?

Levy will be back from America today so maybe this is the start of a bit of effort on the transfer front.

Exactly right. We are probably quite pleased that he's injured (from a financial point of view) as it plays right into our hands. We'll get him, for a decent outlay of 15m - 22m, in the last week of the window.

How about we don't waste our time talking about stupid ratings who cares what you was given and why & concentrate on the Ross Barkley thread instead.
I don't give a flying fook what anyone gives me rating wise there is much more to life than worrying about a bloody spam rating you boring man.

As for Barkley would love to see him in a Spurs shirt we desperately need more options especially off the bench.

Fuck me. I'd hate to meet RicOfWar.

It wouldn't surprise me if Barkley has some kind of loyalty bonus written into his contract that Everton are trying to get around paying.
