Jack Whitehall makes crude, gay jokes in front of sold-out Wembley stadium and everybody laughs repeatedly. A footballer makes one comment a few years back and is a homophobic, unwanted player.

I condemn any kind of racist or discriminatory comments from players who represent us. But at same time, we also got to see the context. Aurier rants were stupid when he was drunk, conversation especially was lead by fan at the other end.

In PL, a week back ,Watford signed Andre Gray for 18m. And he put out series of statement on gay community in past , which goes on like' Burn & Die', 'Makesmesick' etc etc. I don't see Watford or Burnely fans or media rebelling. Infact , I remember Spurs fans here called for us to sign him & did not see the opposition that Aurier is having now.

A player who killed a 22 year old woman drunk driving, escapes with no jail sentence, is just crowned PL champion last season. Not many even mentions about him or the incident anymore. We now have a player in Rose, who did exactly what Aurier did - only Aurier was drunk & stupidly used cringe words, Rose was sober & in clear state of mind - both speaking ill of manager & fellow teammates; But the reaction to both is day & night.

Aurier clearly has a problem - Being Drunk he gets himself in trouble. Incident with Police emphasises that again. May be he has already learned from those incidents. Footballing wise, 20m on him is a good punt on him. With good players & a great manager managing him, he could get rid of those habbits & realise his potential.

I am not against buying him, if Poch feels he can get the best out of him, on field & off field.

Obviously we are on very dodgy ground with this discussion. We would like to point out therefore that Spurs Community does not entertain homophobic views or the holder of those views. While respecting people's right to their religious beliefs there is a time and a place to discuss them and the members of this site have not asked to be preached to.

Imagine my excitement when I saw there were 20+ plus pages to read on Aurier. :)

Now imagine my crushing disappointment when I realise the majority of the past 20+ pages were arguments of wether he was a canonised Cafu mkII, or the second coming of Hitler who could play at rb a bit :notworthy:

ITK people!!!!! I need ITK!!!!!

I don't drink and I realised I shouldn't because I use to do incredibly stupid and damaging things when I did drink.

Whilst being facetious, it's not irrelevant is it? Wrongly, and I'd like to make that very clear. There are still some offensive terms that aren't meant to be taken as a complete hatred of the people in question. It's an archaic way of thinking but its a part of everyday conversation (again, that doesn't make it right).

Without trying to make this thread something it isn't, and at the risk of wrongly outing myself (ironically) as a massive homophobe... Have you never called someone a name in a throwaway comment, that isn't a slight on anyone in particular? An example may be "oh get on with it ya big poof".

If so then I applaud you mate, you're clearly a better person than I.

Of course his had a more malicious tone, but that's not to mean the theory behind it isn't the same.

I'd rather we moved on, if he could do something to interact with the relevant groups etc for example, whilst also performing on the pitch then everyone is a winner.

There's a very clear difference between using a term in a comedic sense to show that someone is being an idiot (i.e. in the Inbetweeners where the use of various terms is used to show how daft those using the terms are) and using the term to deliberately abuse someone.

And yes I have certainly called people things that I shouldn't...but when I was 16 or so. The example you gave is not a throwaway comment...it's homophobic and no better than if you said 'oh get on with it you big Paki'.

Yes there are degrees of homophobia (your example is much less serious than actively abusing someone for being gay for example) but it is homophobia.

Anyway...I think we're in danger of disappearing down a rabbit-hole a bit here. Aurier said something pretty nasty and stupid and (I believe) he has apologised for it. If Spurs are happy that it was a one-off bit of idiocy then I think we can make it work, but if he did anything similar in the future I'd want him out of the club as soon as possible.

Does anybody know when his hearing is regarding the visa? Couldn't find much on Google. (if you make a Danny Rose joke, either in your head or out loud - you're a ****)

Not seen anything to suggest he was drunk.

To be fair though Jack just represents himself on stage. A player represents the club he plays for. I just hope if we sign him we get him under control. We pride ourselves for our class so we need the players to understand and respect that. We made it clear with Alli for actions on the pitch and he is responding well. The same goes for actions off the pitch. A lot of the time it comes down to the people you surround yourself with. Maybe this guy needs a new circle of friends. The group we have may have a positive influence on him as a person.

Lets be honest with ourselves. If Chelsea were to sign him he would already be accused of being scum before he even kicked a ball there. Any excuse to have another pop at our rivals. If he causes trouble here then we will get that from other rival fans. So I can understand the concern.

Would there even be info publicly available about a possible visa case for a player that might be signing?

Hi, **** here, I couldn't find anything either, however I assume the club would have a good idea on this before pursuing it, I hope.

I think it's an appeal against his conviction and there's no guarantee he'll get the verdict before the window closes.

And one of the best goalkeepers.

And 2 of the best midfielders.

And one of the best strikers.

Our team is pretty fucking good.
No wonder Poch has been saying "we are so calm" all preseason

I don't disagree with you, I just think it's a bit hypocritical to be so one-sided about Aurier, and then head out for a after-work Friday night gathering where the same shit is spouted off left, right and centre. Some of us might even be happy paying to hear homophobic rants as jokes on UK clubs and stages.

He's a bit of a **** but lets ne honest. Each and every one have all said and done some pretty stupid things when drunk. It comes with territory. He is a quality player and if Poch wants him then we should give him a chance. If he signs, im sure the club will have him put out an apology for prior transgressions and we'll take it from there.

Just watched some videos of him. Interesting points: he's wearing the captain's armband in a few of the clips. He's ridiculously strong and fast. He loves a slide tackle, and will probably get booked a lot. He loves to get forward but his ball into the box isn't very good. He does that cut inside side / back heel thing Kyle Walker does.

Overall impression is that he's basically a clone of Kyle Walker. They're remarkably similar.

Bringing him in would be the ultimate test of Poch's man-management skills...

Really? There isn't really that much to indicate he is an issue in training or commitment to his team. He's made a few stupid outbursts.
