I just think we need 1 more attacking option, then Lamela in October and we are all set

Desperately missed Lamela's quick feet and clever short passing around the 18 yard box today.

And we've been living with absolute shite from corners for years now since he got injured.

For me, Alderweireld has not been the same since that injury last autumn. His footwork does not seem to be as quick.

I think Toby suffers more than anyone from the bigger pitch. He's not the quickest on the turn and more space in behind makes him quite vulnerable.

Personally very encouraged by that performance. 70% possession against (an albeit weakened) Chelsea is impressive.
Another day we'd have won easily.

Wanyama looked rusty & was surprised Dier was hooked instead of him - maybe his booking influenced poch's decision.

Kane looks so sharp, a decent summer off has done him the world of good.

Lloris will be disappointed after all he's a world class keeper but these things happen.

Strengthen with a couple or three new faces this week then lets go on a massive unbeaten run.

Fucking love my club these days!! Used to get annoyed losing to Chelsea but expected it. Now I'm gutted because we've outplayed them and left empty handed.

1) Pace: We've all been banging on about it,especially the need for a Mane type wide forward of real quality to stretch teams. Now while I'd welcome a player like that I'm not sure it's vital as our gameplay vs Chelsea worked reasonably well we just weren't clinical, but where we did miss pace was from our fullbacks, it's hard to admit it but we missed Walker and Rose's athleticism. If we're going to play with 3 at the back or one of the DM's dropping in then we need our full backs to get in behind teams and too often Davies and Trippier would stop, pass back or cross. I like both of them but i think we clearly need to replace walker and an Aurier type RB would be ideal. If not then we really do need to look at a pacey attacking option who is closer to the first XI than sissoko or GKN.

It's this. The way we play, with three at the back, a wall of steel in Dembele and Wanyama, and then with Kane, Alli and Eriksen in attack, we need fast wing-backs which at the moment we just don't have. In games like today where the opposition are defending deep and pressing us well with tall defenders that are dealing with all of the crosses we're sending into the box, we need a fast tricky player who can dribble and take on players to create an opening. Who in our squad can do that? Son is our only option really. Lamela is nowhere to be seen and isn't THAT good at it. N'Koudou has barely delivered and don't get me started on Sissoko. All of our rivals have players that can do this in our starting XI.

If we play like we did today then we'll beat most teams in the league, but today was a real six pointer and having Davies and Trippier instead of Rose and Walker made a big difference IMO. I know that Lloris and Wanyama were the ones who screwed up for the winner but I can't help but think we'd have done a better job of carving Chelsea open if we'd had more pace in attack.

Think the front 3 looked pretty frenetic - was like a pinball machine in there at times. Can't get Lamela back quick enough imo - can show a bit of poise and pick those little passes to unlock the opposition. Shout out to the Parklane v Shelfside boys too - well impressed with those efforts to make it like home. Keep it up! Early doors as Glenda would say and we'll only get better.

Not once did we try a deep cross to Alli on the far post. Scored 3 goals against them last season doing that yet why didn't we do it once today?

Mixture of them snuffing out the option and fact Davies doesn't get forward quick enough to stretch them. Far too many times Dele was out on the left hand side because Davies doesn't dominate the left like Rose does. We also had to play 3 central midfielders because we were scared about them outpacing or doubling up on our full backs making the centre of pitch extremely congested.

Corners for us are fucking pointless. We may as well just kick it out of play. Their second goal even came from one of Eriksen's many deliveries straight into Coutois' arms. Eurgh.

Also why did we go back to Eriksen taking them rather than Davies? At least Davies managed to swing in a couple of semi-threateners early in the second half. I honestly can't remember the last time Eriksen hit a half-decent corner that both beat the first man and wasn't right down the keeper's throat. So frustrating.

(note this isn't a go at Eriksen who was without doubt one of our better players, more just frustration at the fact we seem to persist with tactics that repeatedly fail.)

Erik Lamela was our man for corners - don't think it was any coincidence that Toby's headed goals dried up last season.

Sanchez equaliser, 2-2 at the lane. Vital goal at a vital moment.

City twice away last year

Monaco away

Top of my head

Monaco as away lol Hugo was utterly immense in that match.

We've played a lot more big matches in between those matches where he hasn't been culpable, but as per usual people love to rewrite history and over exaggerate just to get their point across.

Here's my take..

  • fullbacks cut the ball back to the centre halves when in advanced positions far too often allowing the opposition to settle.
  • too many needless passes backwards when it is more effective to carry/drive the ball forward (Dier, Wanyama, fullbacks again) to draw the opposition out of their defensive shape.
  • Son has to play if we're to threaten the goal regularly; so if we're going 3-4-3 then Eriksen HAS to move into central midfield to accommodate - meaning you can only choose 1 of Wanyama, Dier or Dembele next to him. If Eriksen is out for any reason it needs to be Winks in this formation.
  • We have one of the tallest, strongest first 11 in the Premier League - short corners? Really??
  • Eriksen needs to start seriously threatening the goal from free kicks again.
  • Lloris needs to communicate better for his distribution to improve.
