There is not a lot of upside in a big signing in January. Players are almost always more expensive in January - unless you can find someone like Barkley who is available on a Free this summer. And there are no signings that guarantee a top-4 spot.

On the contrary, from a business sense, Spurs would be much better off with a couple of big signings in the summer - where the marketing potential heading into the new stadium is much greater.

I'd say there is less competition for players in January though.

If, big if, you can find value it gives them time to settle and be up to speed from the start of the season rather than trying to settle then

True - but less opportunity for teams to replace a player, than in the summer. So, you have to overpay to pry someone loose, or you take a player who is already not wanted at his team - neither scenario are ideal.

Add to that fact that we could be getting Wanyama back, Lamela just came back, and hopefully it won't be long for Alderweireld - and Levy controlling the purse - it all adds up to not much business in January...

Barkley in Jan would be nice although I think he’ll go Chelsea.

Then sell Rose in summer and bring in a top class LB, + sessengon + Pulsic. Done

He won't be fit to sell in Jan any way. Free to us in summer as I don't think Sam or Chelsea will change his mind.

Whatever anyone says since Poch arrived as a squad we have improved after every window. Some may argue losing walker and Aurier not being as good. But I think Sanchez balances that out and Foyth looks a real prospect. As long as we keep improving every window, for me it’s 3 more players now.

Looking at the highlights from the Chelsea Athletico game the other night. AM have Griezmann, Torres, Gamiero, Carrasco, A.Correa and Vietto as attacking options, not to mention Diego Costa coming too! Would be interesting to assess and see if one of Vietto, Correa or Carrasco comes available. Correa especially is a great player, who can play multiple positions, Carrasco is awesome but we already knew that!

Don't think they'll want to let any of them go. Griezmann is more than likely going to be off in the summer, and Torres will be 34 in March.

Vietto had that stand out season at Villareal scoring 20 goals and 8 assists, then went to Athletico and couldn't perform the same way in such a defensive team. I don't know what he's like these days, but might be worth a look.

If only this was true!

Transfer report: Tottenham in three-way battle for 'unsettled' Real Madrid star Luka Modric
talkSPORT
Manchester United and Tottenham will rival Inter Milan's pursuit of unsettled Real Madrid star Luka Modric, according to reports.

The Croatia international, 32, has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Bernabeu but is expected to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season.

Since joining from Spurs in the summer of 2012, the influential midfielder has won three Champions League crowns and one LaLiga title.

However, Modric is now resigned to the fact his six-year spell in Madrid is coming to an end, with Diario Gol claiming he has already told club captain Sergio Ramos he will leave next summer.

It has been reported that the Croatian's most likely next destination will be the San Siro, with Inter already establishing contact with the player's representatives.

But it's believed that both Manchester United and Modric's former club Spurs are also in the running.

United boss Jose Mourinho brought Modric to the Bernabeu during his spell in charge of Real and is said to remain a huge fan of the maestro.

It has also been rumoured that Spurs will offer their former star a route back to north London in what would be a sensational return to the Premier League.

He is 32 now so would need to be at a fairly low price for us to be in the running IMO(-£15 mil).

That said a couple of seasons of him next to big Vic on a rotation basis with Winks could be something very special indeed.

Rose may be an excellent left back - but it's time that he left. Would like see Celtic's Tierney or Fulham's Sessegnon brought in to replace him. Or maybe even Shaw - but Mourinho's lack of confidence in him raises a red flag. What's happened to Shaw? Why hasn't he succeeded at Man Utd? At any rate Rose should really be on his way - whether it be to Man Utd or another club.

winks mentioned how he learned from parker and modric when he trained with them
bringing modric back can let our young midfielders (e.g. onomah, skipp) learn a lot from him
