Best thing about Dier is his positioning, and leading others’ positioning. He takes up space and blocks channels, extinguishing opposition opportunities before they can start. Also incredibly orchestrative, verbally and with physical gesturing, getting other defensive players positioned moving up or back down the pitch to gain or cover ground.
Often see him just sitting back telling others where to pass or where to form a defensive line.
That’s where he trumps Wanyama, who is more actively defensive.
