Never thought Toby would be this kind of player. If he isn't up for it I'd rather just cut him loose in the summer and pay up for a good replacement.

When Fergie sold Jaap Stam and Beckham he really put a blueprint down on the whole no-one is bigger than the club mantra, the players respected the club more knowing that they can't mess about otherwise they'll be out.
Fergie has often mentioned how much he made a mistake selling Stam though:
When I think of disappointments, obviously Jaap Stam was always a disappointment to me. I made a bad decision there.

Hasn’t he run down his contract at most of his clubs now? I think it’s just how his agent works to get the best deal for his client.

Is there really any way back now, even if Toby has an unlikely change of heart?

Toby won't sign if he's not first choice, and Vertonghen is essential in the side regardless. Sanchez hasn't done much wrong and would be a real shame to hinder his development now after such a promising start. In a way we've lucked out to get so much experience into Sanchez already.

The 4-2-3-1 system seems to be working too well to drop now (aside from the odd specific game) and does it do Sanchez any favours if he goes back on the bench for the majority of time going forward?

I've made peace with it. The key is just to sell Toby outside of the PL and replace intelligently.
it is a point of no return, if you mess up with poch you are gone

I guess the question we have to ask is whether Sanchez is as good as Toby is (whether he's an acceptable replacement long-term). I'm not sure, but still don't like the idea of selling our good players. Buying a replacement is hit or miss (as we've seen with Walker and others).

As far as I know Stam was wanting to stay, playing for the most successful team in the land and one of the biggest in World. Fergie sold him because he wanted to, if we sell sell Toby in the summer it's because we have no other choice, he wants more money and money we aren't prepared to spend. After the way he moved from Southampton I knew this day would come.

Allegedly it's not just money. He wants a 5 year contract which we don't want to give him at his age.

I think there is a whole lot of bullshit being talked, he wants more money, he wants and elite club, he wants silverware, he wants a release clause, he wants a long contract. The main thing I see as being certain is the release clause, that tells me he would still fancy a move away, at his age if that's true I would simply sell him in the summer.

It all comes across as just wanting to leave. Like Alexis Sanchez down the road, offered the money, wants more..offered that, claims its contract length..that's sorted, now the club lacks ambition. It's easier for a player to just take his demands too far and shift the blame onto the club, rather than straight up say he wants out.

Could just about make a case of not on bench for Chelsea after international break. But if he’s not involved against Stoke then he’s definitely been frozen out.

I hate the term frozen out, like he's being ignored or blackballed. He doesn't want to be at the club past his contract expiring. So why should we be playing him now. Minutes more important for the players who will be here going forward.

Totally agree mate. Id love us to sign De Light as Toby's replacement but then how would he get in the side ? Poch really rates Foyth so maybe an experienced CB in the Naybet / Gallas mould to cover Vertonghen would be the right way to go?

Certainly thinking along those lines, but it's a tricky one, I liked Llorente for similar reasons (experienced and happy to be backup) and that didn't pan out too well!

Someone like Mawson might be willing to play the understudy seeing as he would have come in this season if ITK is to be believed. Not sure if De Ligt would.

Simple fact is with Dier in the team and Wanyama on the bench we don’t need to waste a sub spot on a CB. Toby needs to buckle down in training and wait for an injury to, or loss of form by, Jan or Davinson. If he wants to stay that is.

This is why Poch being given more power over transfers worries me. We do not need another CB, and Dier should definitely be relied on.
Usually I tend to agree with you, but for once I don't. I fully believe that Alderweireld must be replaced by a new signing. Also, it's the right time to do it because there are many youngish, interesting CB talents in several leagues. It's surely the right thing to do.
