They are making that investment secured by the stadium , an investment they know that they will get back in spades when the club is sold . This is a working capital investment to secure a once in a lifetime opportunity which in turn if successful will enchance the value of the club even more, its a no brainer they cant lose as the money will be repaid and if it makes the team champions then the value on sale will increase greatly.

And if he breaks his leg in preseason training it's a total waste and still have to pay him £600k a week.

Rationalise it all you want but for every reason for there is also a reason against.

I get that.

Financially bale doesn't make any sense for us at all.
I disagree, leaving aside his likely contribution on the pitch which could help us win the league or the CL, which would then pay for itself, Bale brings profile to the club which results in increased marketing / merchandise revenues. I’d be very surprised if signing Bale wasn’t self funding over the term of his contract.

Confirmation bias. People will latch onto any bit of information that supports a hypothesis they've already convinced themselves is true. This thread would be a psychiatrist's wet dream.

Who cares? We're in football to win titles. Bale would get us much closer to doing that. I don't care if it doesn't add up financially. Signing Sissoko for 30 million never added up financially but we wasted it all.

Signing a world class player like Bale if we have a real chance just has to be done.

Or does he? Marketing in China would be worth something, I mean they genuinely went mental for him in the China v Wales match (even cheering for him against their own national side ). if we get just £1 of marketing income from a quarter of the population there that's £250m. Obviously a vast exaggeration but with extra foreign TV money, shirt sales etc the financials aren't out of the question

I thought we had £150m to spend as per ITK - £80m on 2 players doesn't seem like a small amount, particularly given any CB we bring in is likely to be a backup unless we change formations.

Also, Bale helps to improve the profile and marketability of the club, whereas most of the other players we've been linked with don't compare in that respect.

If it's a choice between Bale and De Ligt then I know who I'd go for. I know it's not that simple by the way, but I'd like to think we weigh everything up carefully and at least have a conversation with Madrid and Bale before ruling it out.

I don't mean to disregard any info but you have to remember though that this isn't pure fact. We don't really know for sure just how much we do have to spend.

Bale is on £30m a year in wages alone.
That is a lot of merch we'd have to sell extra.

This is where I put my faith in Mr Levy. ;)
As good as Levy is at negotiating, we are talking about a player that would probably start an auction. If another club just offers £10mil more all the clever negotiating in the world just isn't going to help.

Isn't the nike deal flat? We get a set amount no matter how many shirts we sell?

Says the person who dismisses all evidence and declares as fact that something can't happen, when there is a possibility that it could. Now that's the definition of confirmation bias ;):ROFLMAO:

Unless that first refusal deal in the contract is accurate. If it is there wouldn't be a bidding war.

There isn't a specific number, there never is. There will be a rough ball park figure now that will go up and down depending on numerous other factors.

I get the impression that the fee with Madrid for a sale back to us was agreed when we sold him to them. Wages would be the main stumbling block (~£350k+ per week I'd imagine), and of course player preference. If Bale came to us he'd have to believe that he'd be our main man and that we'd invest further in the team to ensure we were competing for the PL and CL every year to give him the stage to win the Ballon D'or. But re-signing him would be a real coup that would take us to the next level and announce our intent! Personally I cannot see it as there are too many blockers to the deal. Despite an affinity for us, I think Bale would see it as a step down. I doubt Bale has the work ethic that Poch desires in terms of a high press. I don't think we can afford his wages. And he be an asset that will depreciate quite rapidly given his age and that he is an explosive athlete.

Eh? First refusal is one thing but we'd have to meet the price offered first. AFAIK there was no set fee to buy him back for.

Yes. But if we met that fee it cannot be increased hence no bidding war.

I'm in agreement with you that i doubt we'd get him. The financials would be too much. Just trying to look at both sides.
