But what happens at CM and CB with Dembele and Toby leaving? £70 mil+ plus huge wages on Bale leaves very little left for quality in other positions.
I think we could fetch Bale and one more seriously good incoming player and call it good. I don't really want a large squad with loads of gambling in terms of incomings anyway. There are signings to fill holes, and then there are signings that would be out of this world. Filling holes is quite fun, sometimes it even works out. But world class signings, they don't grow on trees, and we should just go for it. I think we finished 3rd without Alderweireld being a big participating part in the campaign nor playing his best when he did play, so worst case scenario, there are loads of average + CBs who can fill the role Alderweireld had (or didn't have) this season. CM I'm worried about, though. Goes without saying.

We’re ok at CB really even if Toby leaves we have Jan, Sanchez, Dier with Foyth and CCV coming through. More than happy with that. Still not convinced Dembele is leaving but if he does then we’ll definitely need another CM. Still think we can do that.
Carter-Vickers isn't coming through, I think.

Does not seem like Zidane is bothered about keeping him listening to his press conference. I think we have to get Bale to also prevent Man Utd and Chelsea getting him which would put them out of sight compared to us in my view.
I am still a little shocked at the whole thing. After that performance the last thing I would expect hearing is him wanting out and Zizi hinting that he didn’t want him to stay. Its so abrupt that it feels like there is something in it. Not that he is coming to Spurs, more that he is leaving RM.

I may be wrong (certainly not unusual) but I thought Daniel always said he has a special fund aside from the kitty for if that special person becomes available and the stars align ?

I'm certain I have heard him say that on more than 1 occasion guess that could have just been pr bullshit though as that special somebody has never materialised as yet haha.

I always assumed that the special kitty was Joe Lewis.

I hadnt realised the problem re-signing GB was financial. Thought it was his preference to either stay there with new assurances or probably if coming back to England the lure of United.

If the budget is more limited than some thought and we are as slow to sell as usual then the summer could be a bumpy ride.

What are you doing in here with all this rationality? Dont you know this is the Bales-coming-home wankfest?

Well yes, it is the Bale transfer thread, if you don't like people discussing the possible transfer of Bale to Tottenham Hotspur, I suggest you ignore the thread. Martial for £50m or Bale for £70m there is in my and many other Tottenham fans eyes, no contest

Bale is worth the money because he solves a number of problems for us... He can play as a no.9, he can play as wider attacker, he can play as a creative attacking midfielder. He will also give us better quality from dead balls and increase our goal tally. As a team with a more devastating attack we also become more solid defensively as team would be way more cautious. As I said before would serious try and get Modric back to as we could rotate him with Dembele and even though they are getting on they are the two best players in that deep midfielder position.

I thought we had £150m to spend as per ITK - £80m on 2 players doesn't seem like a small amount, particularly given any CB we bring in is likely to be a backup unless we change formations.

Also, Bale helps to improve the profile and marketability of the club, whereas most of the other players we've been linked with don't compare in that respect.

If it's a choice between Bale and De Ligt then I know who I'd go for. I know it's not that simple by the way, but I'd like to think we weigh everything up carefully and at least have a conversation with Madrid and Bale before ruling it out.

Personally, I'd be very hacked off if we're prepared to spend £70million on a kid with no PL experience but not on one of the World's best players who's still only 28.

Lewis is already making a massive investment in the new stadium. Tavistock were revealed as one of the funders in levy's letter to khan.
They are making that investment secured by the stadium , an investment they know that they will get back in spades when the club is sold . This is a working capital investment to secure a once in a lifetime opportunity which in turn if successful will enchance the value of the club even more, its a no brainer they cant lose as the money will be repaid and if it makes the team champions then the value on sale will increase greatly.

Jesus mate, take a joke.

I've no problem with discussing the idea of Bale coming home, but many here - yourself included - seem to take it as a personal affront when someone points out that the numbers simply don't add up and a transfer of this ilk has never happened before.

Bale's global appeal (over and above Martial's) must mean that some of that cost can be recouped in the increased profile and marketability of the club.

But that's the question; what money? Genuinely interested.

Because I feel that the idea most people have in their heads of what we'd end up paying is widely off the mark.
