I keep seeing this and it's simply not true. I like both players, however they cannot do what Eriksen does. Just like no one could do what Modric does. We need something different in there to what we already have. I'm not saying Grealish is as good, but he can break the lines further up the pitch and has an eye for a pass.

Lamela hasn't been close enough to doing that even though he tries, and Moura is a dribbler more than a passer

You think Lamela doesn’t have an eye for a pass? Or that Grealish has a better eye than Lamela?

I really don't think Grealish is a DM...he's too small and I don't think his tackling is his forte compared to others like Dier or Wanyama. I see him more as that Modric/Eriksen player.

Could well have been posted previously, but these give a better impression of what he is as a player compared with pure highlights videos - they are cut ups of every touch during a match.

Definite potential for Poch to work with.

I think a lot of people, myself included, genuinely didn’t realise what kind of player he’d developed into. When he was in the PL I remember a somewhat flakey flair kind of player, very in and out of games but producing moments of quality. Thinking of this type of player, you look at his stats this season and dismiss him.

However from watching the playoff final, as well as 3-4 full match videos on YouTube over the last day or so, it becomes clear he isn’t that type of player at all. He plays in a midfield 3 and dictates Villa’s game from deep. I knew dribbling and taking players on was a skill of his, but I wasn’t aware of quite how good his pass selection and the timing of when he releases the ball have become. He genuinely looks an absolute top tier dictator of matches at Championship level. In that role, goal contributions aren’t the be all and end all. It’s a role so many of us have said we want to bring in.

Yes, it’s only at Championship level. But he’s only 22 and genuinely has so much to his game. This could be such an astute pickup - I’m very surprised people aren’t a bit more excited by it. Pochettino could work wonders with this kid.

Doing most of our business in the last few days of the window (if true) screams to me that we aren’t properly serious about signing those players and instead are hoping to get deals across the line. I’m prepared for a typically frustrating window.

Oh for the days of having Modric tied up days after the season finishing. Clearly, things are better now but we just don’t seem to do those sort of deals anymore. Liverpool on the other hand...
First you have turned last 2-3 weeks into last couple of days. Secondly long gone are the days of signing players early? Sanchez was signed early last season.

I don't mind people moaning but at least moan about what's really happening.

Something tells me this going to end up to be an excellent signing.

Villa fans seem absolutely gutted to lose him, saw one saying 40m would be a bargain for his potential and that they should just sell everyone else and rebuild around him.

Also *Sherwood*, I know but like him or not he’s got an eye for a young player, said he wouldn’t sell him for 60m when he was in charge, said he had potential to be one of the best.

I think this is going to turn out to be a top signing, especially if the price is as touted

I've never seen anyone claim that he's a dm.

TOP TIP

Do you have something fragile you desperately need to keep out of harm's way such as a British Guiana 1c Magenta stamp, a vial of ebola virus, or the last mating pair of Palos Verdes Blue butterflies on Earth? Simply attach them to Jack Grealish's left foot during a football match and rest assured in the certain knowledge that they will be perfectly safe (y).

At least this time the new transfer window rules are in our favour with the window closing before the season starts. We always used to have half a squad available for the opening 3 or so games of the season and often it cost us valuable points. I really hated it when we did that.

My problem is that we're always prioritising value over what our requirements actually are. You get the impression we're signing Grealish because he's under £20m. If he was being priced at say £40m I wonder if we'd still want him. I'm not saying he's not talented or won't be a good signing, but I think we place too much emphasis on value sometimes.

Of course we have to work within financial constraints but I think all to often the financial side seems to come before the need of the football side. We've got plenty of players we can offload so there's more than enough money about to bring in the players we need imo.

I reckon he could be a blinding player for us.

Also, a lot of the posts in this thread are completely embarrassing. Many of the posters looking like complete morons with their insightful/erroneous comments/moaning.

I think Lamela has had a fair amount of time (before and after injury) to show he can step into Eriksen's boots and do what he does. He cant.

As I said, and have said on this forum, I am a massive fan of Lamela and have wanted him to succeed, but we need something different to what we already have in terms of Eriksen cover as we haven't found that solution, and the person to make way in the squad would be him as the others are too important.

I think Grealish ticks a lot of boxes from both a squad and financial balance POV so it allows us to allocate more money to other pressing areas

(If you're not into stats, look away now)

Quite excited on this signing, if it were to happen. I've only seen him in action a few times, but had a quick look on Squawka and his numbers line up surprisingly well with Eriksen's. Averaged very similar amounts of key- and forward passes, chances created and assists per match last season. So from a "moneyball" perspective, he makes a lot of sense.

Makes sense what you have said.

If you are Poch do you want to use up the additional budget on higher fees and agents fees now for targets of a similar ilk to before, or do you use it to try and get higher quality closer to the end of the window once the dust as settled and some big hitters have left the market?

Grealish is a bit of an outlier as it's opportunistic and not for a priority area.

Considering the window now ends before the PL starts rather than 31st August anyway, I think Poch will be fine with that, as long as we are still active up until that point.

I agree. I have absolutely no problem with signing Grealish. I think he’s got potential and if Poch thinks he can bring the best out in him, then I support it.

It does seem like the sort of signing we should be making at the end of the window though, when we’ve made our key signings already. It’s the kind of signing that would actually make sense to leave late and then hold Villa to ransom on, as we know they need to sell and we know we’d be his preferred choice of club.
