According to WhoScored he played 25 games as striker last season and 16 forward left. I am assuming he will be our Kane back up but with more flexibility than Janssen or Llorente to keep him fit and game ready? Although I’ve never seen him play so don’t know if he could cut it as CF in the PL

I’m guessing this is legit, but how far would Levy go with smokescreen to try and put pressure on United?

The injury was poorly timed right in the middle of what otherwise might have been considered two 'breakout' seasons. That said, he has not faced, or scored, against much quality opposition. Four goals against Guingamp should be more of a red flag than a medal.

If this was a 'flyer' signing at a low price....like N'Koudou, frankly...who Poch saw as a squad player with potential who could be loaned out if we were able to bring in Martial, then it might make some sense. I wouldn't mind seeing Plea with a team like Newcastle and a manager like Benitez for a season, particularly with Atsu's loan ending.

The problem for me would be if Plea is the best quality we're able to recruit in an attacker this summer. That would be a tremendous disappointment after multiple summers missing on top forward targets.

And yes, saving money for a great central midfielder would be nice. Color me skeptical on that one and/or wake me up when Poch has his arm around SMS or Kovacic.

Scout report published in March...

Following a brilliant start to the 2016-17 campaign, the season-ending knee injury Plea suffered in February signalled the end of Nice's Ligue 1 title hopes last year. He has made a full recovery following a prolonged spell on the sidelines, and scored four goals in a 5-2 thrashing of Guingamp at the weekend.

Playing style

A mobile forward who can play through the middle or on either flank, Plea's position has gradually switched from the wing into a typical centre-forward role. Although he occasionally still appears on the left of Nice's attack, cutting inside to deliver dangerous crosses on his favoured right foot, his greatest strengths are displayed around the box.

The 25-year-old is a composed finisher on either foot and exhibits a keen positioning sense, playing off the shoulder of the defender to race on to through-balls. He is a threat at set-pieces owing to his strength in the air, and can hold on to possession up the pitch, looking to link play and bring teammates into attacking moves.

Form

Plea's four goals against Guingamp marked a return to form in what has been a challenging campaign.

The striker came storming back from his injury absence with seven goals in 11 appearances at the start of the season but managed only four goals, plus three assists, in 28 games before Sunday's haul. At 25, Plea is entering a key stage of his career as he looks to cement his status as one of Ligue 1's leading attackers.

Where would he fit in?

Despite signing a new contract in January with a reported release clause of €50m, Plea has expressed his desire to move abroad in the future.

West Ham and Southampton have both been linked in recent months, but Leicester could emerge as his most likely destination. Claude Puel brought Plea to Nice for just £450,000 from Lyon in 2014 and remains an admirer of the forward's technical qualities.

Fucking hell, linked with West Ham, Southampton and Leicester.

I think you have to judge this one in the context of our whole transfer window.

If we get him and a top class midfielder you'd say he was an astute buy to provide cover in a couple of positions but if we're not going to strengthen the midfield properly then for sure you'd say it was underwhelming.

This is not the Pléa we’re looking for.

‘Cos there weren’t enough puns in this thread already...

Unfortunately IMO, this one looks like the most likely of all our rumours.
We normally sign a player out of nowhere.
He is cheap and most likely an alternative to Martial. And I don't think this is a "smokescreen". As I understand United don't want to sell him to us. So if we have an alternative that's great for them, if they want to sell him he will have to go somewhere else.

I have not seen him play. What worries me are our history with recruitment from Ligue 1, it has been abysmal. But hopefully this turn out the opposite if it happens. He is 25 though so not that young.

Hugo says hi.
