An extra body in midfield was essential . Genius Southgate couldn't see it. I think everyone on here did.

I find it strange Southgate is being lauded as a great England manager when the truth is if he was a PL manager he'd be totally out of his depth.

How would switching Lingard with RLC add an extra body to midfield?

You're not putting an extra body in. You're just swapping Lingard for RLC. RLC would have had the same instructions Lingard had.

Henderson and any of Dier, Delph or RLC. All four are limited players but at least 2 of them v Modric, Rakitic and Brozovic would have made a huge difference. Instead it was 1 v 3 and it showed. We lacked balance and Southgate compounded it by not addressing it with a single one of his subs.

Until the likes of Barkley, Grealish? Maddison may be? Shelvey? Wilshire? step up to the plate and get a lookin, this England team is going to continue to play side ways and long ball football.

I agree but at this moment none of the players you mentioned are good enough.
The only change I would have thought about doing for the Croatia game would have been delph for Alli/Lingard

Personally I thought Jonjo Shelvey made a good case to be picked, we certainly didn't take anyone able to do what he was doing regularly last season.

Sterling. I keep hearing people say 'if you cant see what he brings to the team then you dont know what youre on about.'
Well I CAN see that every time he gets the ball our attack breaks down and he spends most of his time on his arse. See if you can see when he recieves the ball and something good comes of it.
That pass to Kane in the box was the first one in the whole tournament I think.

Is RLC anymore creative?
He has played a fair amount in this World Cup and has created less than Lingard imo
It was not about creativity it was about matching the midfield. Lingard and Ali are too weak to be alongside Henderson in an area where it was clear Croatia would win the game. It's how it panned out...wasn't it?
RLC could of driven with the ball from midfield but as I said earlier I do reserve judgement on RLC. Then again I would of taken either Wilshire or Shelvey or both. Southgate took no midfield creativity to Russia and it shows.

I am watching an overhead view of the match - England have no movement in the attacking end. I don't know if its just tired legs, or tactics, but its frustrating nonetheless.

I agree they’re not good enough but you don’t compound your weaknesses by playing a completely lop sided line up. Southgate has been ‘lucky’, he doesn’t have a clue about tactics or in game management.

The cable-cam view, much better than having to listen to the Fox commentators!

I'm purely watching Eric dier really.

I think he looks really good when he's on the ball. Crisp passing, strong, surprising bit of agility

Without it however he's a bit of a statue. Regardless who has possession. Like to see him close play quicker, snap into tackles, be a real **** to play against. I'm sure he used to be that way
That's such a strange thing to want from him.

Do that and he'd be pulled around everywhere and it would leave all sorts of holes in midfield. I don't get this attitude that running around a lot and having a good work rate means you're doing a good job defensively, whereas being smart positionally means you're being 'a statue.'

He's been really good so far. He's filling the holes in front of the back three and not allowing the likes of De Bruyne to get on the ball in those pockets between the midfield and the defence. He can't do that if he's running around like a headless chook as so many people seem to think he should.

As an added bonus he's been very composed under pressure and used the ball well.

He needs to move to a bigger club and also show that he’s grown out of his hot headed aggressive streak.
