Sorry didn’t mean to make that sound like itk. Someone tweeted me today about him, so I messaged a good friend who is a boca fan in Argentina and he said that was the rumour. So as I said large pinch of salt.
There's no rumour in Argentina about Barrios. The last mention was when the window was open, and his last link was with Chelsea, not us.

I concur with Ossie85, haven't seen anything in the papers over here and I'm sure friends would have mentioned if there was anything of substance as you can't swing a cat without hitting a Boca fan.

Despite the most inept transfer window in the history of transfer windows, the stadium situation, the injury crisis, the World Cup fatigue, the captain letting himself and the entire club down, the supposed training ground bust-up between Alderweireld and Trippier, the defense as a whole looking like a shadow of itself from years past, the dreadful form of important players such as Eriksen, Son, Dier, and (until recently) Kane, and the generally insipid performances we've turned in, we've somehow managed our best-ever points return through eight matches in the Premier League.

That just goes to show how effective we've become under Pochettino, and how much this group could accomplish if he were given proper backing and equipped with the tools to truly compete with the likes of City, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Perhaps I'm being a bit dramatic, but this January feels to me like a make-or-break moment for the club. We were reliably told that Eriksen and Dele were close to new contracts over the summer, yet none have materialized. We're now offering competitive wages, so for me that can only be because they are unconvinced of the club's ambition on the pitch (and who can blame them?). The same could be said of Alderweireld (although his situation is perhaps a bit more complicated), and Vertonghen's contract is running down as well.

Fail to convince these players that the project is still worth believing in before next summer, and we could easily be looking at being forced to sell some or most of them for cut-rate fees and finding ourselves back at square one. Address the glaring weakness in the squad (CM) and get them back on side, on the other hand, and we could be flying.

If ever there were a time to go the extra mile, to "be brave" and take a risk, to pay that bit over the odds that it takes to bring in real quality in the current market, surely this would be it. So my wishlist is that the club show the ambition that it takes to keep this project together. Whether we do will be a test of whether ENIC actually does care to win things, or whether we truly have become a glorified property development company.

With Mourinho looking like he's going to get sacked soon that likely takes Martial and Rashford off the table (both their contracts end 2020, what're the chances they're neglected by a new manager?), never spending the money on Zaha who also signed a new contract which versatile attacking players are out there? Someone who can play as a striker and as a winger/wide forward. Very unlikely to happen in the winter of course but perhaps a player who can be lined up for the summer, was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

It won't happen because it's too much of a risk, but Fekir is available and would singlehandedly provide additional cover for Kane, all of the AMs, and another option in central midfield. He's also fucking class. With that one addition we could ratchet up the competition at every position outside of defense.

Lol@cover for Kane.
Fekir can play all across the attack as well as in CM so I'm not sure what's funny. Obviously Kane will always play when fit, and perhaps it'd be more accurate to describe Fekir as a flase nine when he plays up top, but it'd still give us another option in case of injury.

Good post. Yes, this does feel like a bit of a crossroads now where the 'project' for want of a better word might fall apart or have to be restarted and would that be with Poch if he doesn't think that the club are showing ambition?

I don't think it's important to sign anyone this winter transfer but what we MUST MUST MUST do, is have at least 2 Big signings wrapped up for the summer.

I think if a club came in for poch one that has money to back his ambition or one that just literally backs him, the club may then have a struggle on it's hands to keep him you would feel.

Wasn't the reason Fekir didn't sign for Liverpool that he wasn't able to pass a medical due to his old injuries?

Wasn’t really clear, read some reports that Aulas tried to change the deal last minute. Could be he failed medical. He’s a hard negotiator, and a little nuts.

Shelvey. I've been banging his drum for ages. Exactly what we need.

Different to Dembele of course, very different skill set... But a long term replacement in the squad.

Stick him beside Wanyama or Dier, and we'd look a completely different team.

There were reports of that which is why I said it would be too much of a risk for us. He's made 40+ appearances in each of the two seasons since his knee injury but there were definitely question marks over his medical in the summer. Probably not a realistic option, but one that would address the areas that the poster I was responding to was asking about.

Fantastic post, but also one that does little to alleviate my four a.m. night sweats

It's very clear who just watches MOTD and base their opinions off of that...

I rarely watch MOTD... It's shite. But I guess you're aiming that at the few of us who rate Shelvey. He's really developed into a really good player. Watched a lot of him at Swansea as well and he's still performing well in a struggling Newcastle side.

He's exactly the type of player our midfield is crying out for.
