Started way before that

Did it?

I really can’t remember the bottling thing come into the mainstream until that Leicester title winning season (we theoretically we as the only challengers were the only team that didn’t bottle it, it was all the other supposed top clubs, arsenal especially).

Spoke to a Man U fan yesterday, he wants us to win it. Said he fkin hates Liverpool and City. Probably true for a lot of them I'd imagine.
He also complimented us on how amazing we're doing considering the injuries we've had.
Think he wanted to bum me actually lol.

She said that when we lost to West Ham in the 2016/17 season, the Leicester season was the year before.

We've been known as legends since Lasagna-gate and maybe even before that but the difference is that social media wasn't as big as it is now back then.

Ok, I got mixed up. Too much disappointment does that to a person.

I could completely understand it if we beat them to the title in 2016.

I guess they are jealous of how despite not winning the title, we stayed there or there abouts the following seasons when they fell back in to mid-table mediocrity.

the hate goes back generations, we cost them winning the League in the 60's, we have beat them in 2 Finals, we have beat them in a semi final or 2, and we used to batter them at Filbert St in the stands:cautious: in the year of triumph every week they had to listen to "we're coming for you"

we have only missed out on playing in Europe once since Jol got us to 5th, we are about to go into a state of the art stadium and everything we have done is without throwing money at it. that is why most teams hate us

Just google 'mail suicide vile twitter trolls' and its the first result...although i remember that day like it was yesterday.
It cracks me up that he was moaning about burning his coat with an iron though.

I spend too much time on SC to have missed @riggi being publicly vilified in the DM. Amazing.

I work with a gooner who would rather we win over Liverpool. I made him repeat himself when the scouser turned up. I said, “see this is how much everyone hates you”.

I told the gooner that there is no way I’d rather Arsenal win the league over Liverpool but just goes to show how much some people hate liverpool.

As someone who remembers, and suffered, a time when we had nothing to bottle because we were just plain shocking, I embrace our current apparent capacity to dig failure from the jaws of glory.

I think this should actually read 'most internet-forum-using fans hate us'.

Although it precedes its rise, the internet forum has similarities to social media - it caters to a particular type.

In any group, you'll have those who are more vocal than others. And generally, you'll find more extreme views within the vocal subgroup than in the non-vocal.

The type that will post on an internet forum will likely be those who are more vocal. And because the nature of an internet forum conversation is one of active participation - one has to want actively to contribute rather than be pulled passively into a conversation - this means that those who post on internet forums will be those who have something they want to express, so even more vocal.

Within a grouping, you will find those with more extreme views tend to be more vocal. So in the vocal subgroup of any group, you will find more extreme views than in the non-vocal subgroup.

How does that translate to an internet forum? Well, let's take SC. This site has over 26,000 members. But of those, only a very small fraction post on a regular basis. They're the vocal subgroup of SC members, who are themselves a subgroup of the Spurs fanbase.

And as they're more likely to be the vocal subgroup, they will have a higher proportion of those with extreme views. You'll find more extreme views, like "hating" another team for example, in an internet forum than in a wider sample of the overall Spurs fanbase. That's not to say that every regular poster on SC (or any other forum) is part of the extreme subgroup, but that because vocal subgroups contain a higher proportion of extreme view holders, the extreme view is stronger there than in a more balanced sampling.

And I would imagine that is precisely the case in every other internet forum, be that a specific club forum like SC, or a general forum like the BBC's HYS (some REAL crazies on there!). An internet forum only provides a snapshot of a fanbase, and a not very complete one at that, so the perception that we're hated I think only applies to those who frequent internet forums. I've been to games where after the match I've had conversations with rival fans who've been complimentary of us and even admitted to liking us.

Add to that various cognitive biases and it can lead us to think that we're viewed in a particular way by all, rather than just a sampling.

The picture we get from internet forums isn't an accurate picture of rival fans think of us - it's only a flavour of how one subgroup of fan views us.

Really? Aside from a few patches in the 80s we were shite until 7-8 years ago, and even then we're good not great & defo not the best. I don't get the attitude of boasting about how great something is when it's clearly not. Bravado is pathetic. I prefer to under play a hand. Be modest until you're at the top, then as Lord of all you survey say, "It's good to be the king".

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not lol.

My take is that we've never won titles (2 in 135 years) but won various domestic and a few lower European tin pots up until the 90's to convince ourselves we we're a big club. This led a lot of fans to give it the bigguns to Chelsea, arsenal and west ham fans among many. The problem is, from 92 onwards we just got shitter and shitter and shitter right up until about 07 and even then we had a couple of wobbles on the way to where we are now.
We still haven't won a significant trophy in a very long time.
In that time teams like liverpool and man United have won 40 titles between them, arsenal and Chelsea have wiped the floor with our trophy haul and west ham, they finished above us once.
