Racist abuse in our stands, we need to face it if it’s there.

There’s a guy on Twitter (JohnHall1985) says he was in block 251 and tweeted he heard monkey chants.

That’s the only person I’ve seen saying they heard it, but I guess there could be others. It certainly couldn’t be heard in 252.
A guy on twitter. Yeah. Tenuous

I vote we hold the firing squad a while on this one...

During yesterday’s match against Chelsea, Antonio Rudiger reported hearing alleged racist abuse from an individual(s) in the South Stand.

We are able to track every fan via the cameras and have spent many hours reviewing CCTV footage. We have engaged lip readers to study the footage and contacted Chelsea for further information from their players. We have also taken statements from other parties present at the time. The police will be reviewing our evidence alongside us. Please be assured we shall be exhaustively investigating this matter.

This Club has a proud track record of anti-racism work across all our communities and we are determined to ensure that we conduct a thorough investigation. Any fan found to be guilty will receive a lifetime ban. At this time however we should point out that our findings are inconclusive and would ask that comment is reserved until the facts are established.

If anyone has any further information they should please email [email protected] or text 07537 404821.

In respect of protocols – when the incident was conveyed to the referee Anthony Taylor, he took the decision to call for the implementation of Stage 1 of the UEFA protocol – rather than the Premier League protocol - and asked for an announcement to be made, as well as requesting a further announcement which created a misconception that any issue was on-going. The Premier League protocol differs from UEFA protocol in that it does not call for an announcement rather that the individual(s) be dealt with by the Safety Team in the first instance.

We have asked that the Premier League clarifies the position regarding the use of these protocols to all stakeholders going forward.

The rush to judgement is really depressing to me. Mainstream news outlets and commentators lining up to shame the racist behaviour of our fans, with not a shred of actual evidence that any racist abuse actually occurred in sight.

Of course they rushed to judgement, the vast majority don't want to be on the wrong side of racism and any opportunity to prove yourself as to not be racist was too good to turn down for most but our society not only has a problem with racism it also has a problem with due process. I'll gladly condemn any racist behaviour when there's evidence but I'll be waiting until there is some.

Well. Not to mention our own fans!! Theres a cohort raging around willing to pull the lever on anyone who expresses doubt or reserve, let alone on anyone who may actually have done anything!

Its astonishing how bad some people want this to be true

That solitary guy is now saying that it wasn't loud enough for Rudiger to hear from where he was, so there must've been more people doing it, yet if more people were doing it, there would surely be more than one bloke on twitter claiming to have heard it...something doesn't add up.

If you're making monkey noises loud enough for a player to hear who is 20 meters away, possibly hundreds of people hear it.

Basically, we're doing everything we can to find people who were making monkey chants but at this moment in time with the best technology has to offer we've not found anyone doing it.

We all know there are racists in our fanbase, racists we work with, even friends who may hold secret racist views but I'm wondering how Rudiger was capable of hearing monkeys chants and the crowd microphones didn't pick up anything

Racism is not just a problem for football, it is a problem for all of society, of which football is just a microcosm. Because of herd mentality and the emotions involved in a heated football match, this type of incident is more likely to surface at a game than at a supermarket (where people with racist leanings can keep 'their veil' from slipping). If you make racist gestures or use racial slurs then you should be arrested and cautioned for a hate crime - whether you are in a football crowd, a theatre, the cinema, at work, on public transport etc. Repeated behaviour should warrant further criminal punishment. This behaviour simply should not be tolerated by society.

The way football needs to react is to (and I hope we lead the way at Spurs) ...
  1. Ensure clubs use star players to get across the message that racist behaviour is unacceptable and that the colour of someone's skin is irrelevant - we are all the same. For example, it would be very effective for us to use a cross-section of the racial heritage in our squad - e.g. Kane, Dele, Son and Sissoko - communicating a simple anti-racism message that gets played around the stadium (bars, shop, big screens etc. before every game). The message should be a positive one of unity, but also underline racist behaviour is not acceptable in our stadium and people with those views are not welcome.
  2. Ensure the stewards at games are trained appropriately and can trigger evidence collection e.g. surveillance cameras (which are already in place) used to capture evidence and pursue offenders.
  3. Give life stadium bans to offenders where there is clear evidence of racist, or any other anti-social, behaviour.
I don't see that football can do, or should be expected to do more than that, and that all of society needs to address this problem, starting in schools.

It is also worth reflecting that if only 0.1% of the population was consciously and vocally racist then that would mean there would on average be 61 racists at a Spurs home game. As I understand it Rudiger accused an individual.

I posted early in this thread that I hope they come up with some evidence or corroberation otherwise this is going to open a can of worms for him. we've seen this go viral and yet there's still nothing and I'm sure the media will have been all over every inch of video coverage.
I'll say it again, I hope the investigation uncovers something because if they have all the footage and find nothing and with nobody coming forward to corroberate it is going to reflect badly on him with the result that people will question all instances in the future.
I watched the game in San Francisco and saw replays of Rüdiger pointing out monkey noises 10 minutes after they happened. 4/5 hrs after the game people here had seemingly not seen the footage? Perhaps these were people at the game ? Or did sky/BT not show it?

There is evidence - Rüdiger’s accusation. We need to take those accusations at face value.

We don’t have a problem in football with false accusations of racism against innocent people. We have a problem with racism.

We are no more racist than any other club but we don’t need to throw Rüdiger under the bus to save ourselves.

Rudiger's problem was with the east stand block 251 is in the south stand, I'm in 252, it was pandemonium so with the best will in the world he didn't hear anything in block 251.

I think people are suggesting he was mistaken, rather deliberately make a false accusation.

No ones doing that, just pointing out there is a chance that he misheard something for monkey noises.
Answer this, why have the club not been able to find any video evidence supporting the allegation?

An accusation is not evidence. It’s an accusation, which needs to be corroborated with evidence to be proved as fact.

No one here has talked about throwing ’Rüdiger under the bus to save ourselves’. What a shitty thing to say.
