There is fuck all point bringing a manager of Mourinho's standing to the football club and then not offering him some backing in the areas with the most glaringly obvious holes.
Again, it's fucking laughable.
Alluding to a few posts I read earlier on this site I get the feeling Levy thought that the squad was perfectly fine just that Poch and the divisions in the squad where the problem.
Thus if we bring in a another top manager it will fix very quickly without the need for large investment when in reality the main issue was the squad itself.
Like everyone else on this forum that's just my feeling/opinion on the situation but if it’s correct and Levy expects Mourinho just to work with what he has mostly I can’t see a happy ending.
On the other hand if Levy did agree the squad was not right and simply wanted Mourinho to be at the forefront of a rebuild then there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
@hakano - this was genuine attempt to recollect information we had from various sources over the years. Anything you can add/change would be appreciated.Players I think we know Pochettino wanted compared to those he got in their place.
Schneiderlin Stambouli
Musacchio Fazio
Wanyama Wanyama
Janssen Janssen
Mané Sissoko
Pereira Aurier
Foyth Foyth
de Jong No-one
Ndombele Ndombele (a season later)
Barkley Lo Celso? (a season later)
Not backed?
I think Jose has seen that the midfielders at his disposal means he cannot build from the back. We can't play a defensive lineup as we'll lose the midfield battle, lack protection for the defence and we'll get outplayed and struggle.
So he has played our ball players but we are not good enough to dominate a game.
At the moment we are a mess. Dier and Sissoko are not good enough to play the defensive mid role, Wanyama is injured and almost certainly not coming back and our other midfield options can't play the role.
It is a tough time but Jose is not the cause and no manager would resolve the issues within a few months.
I'm still baffled as to why Skipp has been continually overlooked. He was very good in pre-season and did pretty well when Poch used him too. Mourinho seems intent on using 'his' system even if we don't have the players for it, although having said that he's thrown a few more bodies into midfield v Livepool and Watford and we've been quite a bit more solid. As I said, I'd have liked to have seen Skipp get a run out at least, but this is Mourinho and he hardly ever trusts young, inexperienced players. Maybe he's learned something from Tanganga but I'm not holding my breath.
Think you have provided your own argument. Jose will play a young player he believes can perform. The fact he isn't playing Skipp is not simply because Jose doesn't promote youth.I'm still baffled as to why Skipp has been continually overlooked. So when Jose plays a youngster it is because he is terrified but when he doesn't it's because he doesn't promote youth.I think it's a bit of both really. I think Tanganga got the nod because Mourinho was terrified of the pace of Liverpool's front 3, especially against Vertonghen. Having given him a chance he's now realised that the kid can play. On the other hand, he persisted with Dier when he was very, very poor (IMO because he's experienced and a senior player) but unceremoniously binned Foyth off the back of 1 mistake in a match where he otherwise played pretty well. It is Mourinho's template which is why I'm not surprised.
All reasonable points but I’d say he’s become more ruthless about Dier recently. The problem is, we clearly need a DM to shield the defence and initiate counterattacks but we just don’t have that player and I’d imagine Mourinho hoped he’d get the Dier of a few years ago but that just doesn’t exist anymoreI think it's a bit of both really. This is the problem when people have a negative view on someone. They just twist everything they do into a negative.
I’m sure JM fully recognises this. As much as it’s currently the most important position we need to rectify, if the right player isn’t available in January the worst thing to do is over pay for a average solution. I trust JM will know exactly who we need and the likely price we’ll need to pay. Far prefer to wait for that rather than divert already very restrictive funds and a place in the squad to a player who’ll need to be offloaded in a year or two because he was too average for a team that wants to win things. All reasonable points but I’d say he’s become more ruthless about Dier recently. Well, we’ve only conceded one goal in our last two league games.Would it be right to say that since Jose was appointed our xG conceded has fallen steadily?
