I disagree. He isn't saying that at all. At present it is unlikely that Spurs (or anyone else) will agree a fee with his club for him so why would he rock the boat? Especially with him being a relatively new, young player there? If Spurs (or anyone else) start to get serious in negotiations with his club then the situation would change. At present it seems he isn't one of our first choice purchases. If things get serious his agent will let him know and then I'd bet a lot of money that his comments to the press would change probably to something like 'Tottenham are a fantastic club and the premier league is a great league where everybody wants to test themselves but I'm contracted to Wolfsburg, happy here and they decide my future'.
I respect your opinion.

I’m sure most are happy to be pursuing Koundé. I’ve got to say I’m not convinced. His style of play is to constantly dribble up the pitch like some sort of box to box centre back. I reckon if he does that in the prem we’ll be terribly exposed.

maybe I’m missing something - like stats. Maybe he’ll be amazing? But watching clips of him I just dont buy it. I don’t get the attraction of a CB who spends most of his time in the opposition penalty area?

Don’t believe he’s worth £60-70m and I’ll be disappointed if we spend that on him when we could’ve gone for Konsa.

Might just be a shit compilation, there are loads of defender compilations which spend half the time showing the goals they've scored, which is obviously not what most people are interested in.

Not gonna lie, I’ve barely seen him play so can’t make a judgement.

I do agree with you though in that they way you’ve described him and the clips give off a distinct David Luiz vibe. However, playing devils advocate that’s exactly what the clips would do being YouTube. It’s more exciting, innit?

Maybe the guy has a fair bit of defensive nous as well, but it’s just not apparent by the videos.

That's the thing though. Compare him to other CB's and the only stat he's elite levels in is ball progression and passing. When it comes to actual defending he's quite average and far behind Skriniar and Romero for example. Just like you I get serious David Luiz vibes and I'm not at all convinced he's what we need. If he comes here I'd be more than happy if I'm proved wrong however.

Imagine if we could have signed Varane at his age.. thats how good Kounde is.

How good he could be. We heard similar about Ndombele when he was at Lyon. That's turned out well... there's no telling how well a player will settle here.

Ok but what's he like defending a corner?

Obviously players have to settle in and adapt to the PL but he’s been outstanding in La Liga for 2 seasons. Great on the ball, anticipation, great jumping to beat taller attackers.. if Madrid or Barça had the money they’d have signed him already.

I think the idea is that Romero is the stopper and Kounde is the more ball playing/press resistant partner. Think Vidic and Rio, often regarded as the ideal PL pairing.

Stats wise Kounde seems to have good aerial stats despite his height. He also seems to have decent recovery pace which is key in this league.

Rodon likely fills in as the backup to Romero, Tomiyasu for Kounde should it happen.

I really like the options we'd have if all three players came in.

I understand what you mean and he might very well become absolutely amazing. I just have this opinion that if there is one glaring flaw in modern football it's that sometimes defending doesn't seem to be the most important trait for defenders anymore. I think it's a bit odd and if we pay over 60m for a defender, my expectation is that he would be an elite defender, not an elite progressor of the ball but so-so defender.

Yeah its defintiely a concern but unfortunately you need your CBs to be able to do both these days.

For all his faults David Luiz has won a ton of trophies when paired against a quality stopper. Sevilla were known for being strong defensively and Kounde has apparently impressed Madrid, who would likely buy him if they weren't seemingly saving all their pocket money for Mbappe. This is a highly regarded player and I don't think that happens if he was a liability defensively.

The very elite are the likes of Dias and Van Dijk that do both and have great physicality to boot. Outside of those you likely need a combination of the two in your CB pairing.

I think your concerns are valid (no signing is a guarantee) however I'm not sure basing it on a YouTube comp that is likely unfairly skewed to the more outrageous parts of his game is ideal either.

That said I'm far from confident that we make this particular deal happen so it's likely a moot point regardless.

For those who don’t know much about Kounde, this is a really good article and analysis on him:

Lloris, Tomiyasu, Romero, Kounde, Regullion, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Son, Bergwijn, Kane

Gollini, Doherty, Rodon, Tanganga, Davies, Skipp, John, Dele, Sessegnon, Gil, Scarlett

Overall would most be reasonably happy with this or are we still any couple of realistic players short?

I think another striker would be a given, Ings seems the best fit.

If we shift both Winks and Sissoko I'd be tempted to add a player here, the likes of Aouar, Sabitzer, Renato Sanches or Pellegrini.

If we sold either Lucas or Bergwijn I'd be going hard for Damsgaard.

Only other area I'd consider is a more attacking RB option. This would be contingent on Aurier and possibly Doherty leaving. Jesus Corona has been linked as have Aarons and Lamptey.

Edit - this is probably best for the Paratici thread.

Good line-ups but still a back-up striker, and perhaps a playmaker, short.
